Innovas Technologies CASE STUDY: VCU MEDICAL CENTER 2016 BACKGROUND In December 2014, VCU Medical Center in Richmond, VA installed Innovas Technologies’ Helios Tube Cleaning System TM on a 1200-ton Trane chiller identified as N. Hospital Chiller #1. Data were collected from existing chiller instrumentation before and after Helios Tube Cleaning System installation to analyze chiller energy efficiency and determine the Helios Tube Cleaning System TM impact on chiller efficiency. DATA ANALYSIS METHOD ASHRAE Guideline 14 Measurement of Energy and Demand Savings provides protocols for measurement and validation of energy-saving initiatives and projects. ASHRAE 14 requires monitoring of pre-retrofit (baseline) performance and post-retrofit performance. From the baseline data, a multivariate regression analysis is performed to develop a predictive performance model for the chiller, and the baseline energy consumption can then be projected into the post-retrofit time period. The difference between the baseline energy use and the post-retrofit energy use represents the estimated energy savings. The results below represent the analysis of the data gathered from VCU in accordance with methods described in ASHRAE Guideline 14. BACKGROUND In December 2014, VCU Medical Center in Richmond, VA installed Innovas Technologies’ Helios Tube Cleaning SystemTM on a 1200-ton Trane chiller identified as N. Hospital Chiller #1. IMPROVED ENERGY EFFICIENCY The chiller performance data points for both pre-Helios and post-Helios chiller efficiency are plotted in Figure 1. In accordance with ASHRAE 14 methodology, the data in orange show what the chiller efficiency would be without the HELIOS TCSTM installed, and the data in blue demonstrate the actual chiller efficiency with the HELIOS TCSTM in operation. The pre-Helios data distribution is significantly above the post-Helios data distribution, indicating the chiller consumed less energy per ton of cooling generated (kW/Ton) after Helios installation.

INCREASED CHILLER COOLING CAPACITY In addition to the improved energy efficiency and reduced chiller energy consumption, the maximum cooling output of the chiller improved significantly as well. As observed in Figure 2 above, under the same input conditions, the chiller generated an average of 30-100 tons of additional cooling under maximum power input. At times, the chiller output capacity was increased by as much as 140 tons after Helios TCS installation! Importantly, the increased cooling capacity is greatest towards the end of the cooling season, just when maximum capacity is needed most!
