Each year the Inn hosts two specialevents, one for undergraduate studentswho might be interested in coming tothe Bar, and another for law lecturers
and professors. The aim is the same for both:to present the Inn and our profession in arealistic and attractive way to those who mightjoin us and those who could influence them to do so.
This year we add a third constituency witha special event on 26 June at the Inn forteachers from secondary schools. Two hundredinvitations have gone out to schools in a jointinitiative with the National Education Trustwith the aim of putting a career at the Bar onthe radar screens of those who might otherwisehave never have thought about it.
What then are the features that make theBar special? How would you sell the Bar topotential recruits? Do the Inns make a

Over a year ago, I invited thePresident and Director General ofthe RHS to a luncheon in Hall tomeet our 2008 Treasurer, Master
May. We asked him two questions, firstly,would they help us select a new HeadGardener? Secondly, would they considerputting on a Flower Show again in the Templein 2008? I am pleased to say that after a goodlunch and a walk around the garden, they said"yes" to both. The result of that has firstlybeen the inspired appointment of AndreaBrunsendorf - already, as you can see, she hastransformed the garden so that it is worthy of aSovereign's visit in June and of the RHS inSeptember. It will, however, only get better.
We invited the President and the DirectorGeneral to Private Guest Night in the Inn inMay. They toured the Garden with, amongstothers, the Master of the Fruiterers Company,the Vice Chairman of the Open SpacesCommittee of the City of London Corporationand the Master of the Gardeners’ Company.They were all highly impressed with the
wonderful venue and they greatly look forwardto a high class event in both the Garden and inthe Round of the Temple Church. Ourneighbours, Freshfields, are kindly sponsoringthe event and the RHS and the Inner Templewill be hosting celebrations in the Inn onThursday 11 and Friday 12 September whilethe event goes on. As part of thosecelebrations, the Worshipful Company ofFruiterers are generously presenting ourTreasurer with a 1608 mulberry tree which willbe planted by the President of the RHS at theevent. Also, inspired by the words of CharlesLamb, a famous former resident of the Inn,that "…lawyers were children once" (which isinscribed on one of the garden statues) theRHS mission is to introduce the young to thewonders of gardening. On Saturday 13September there will be a Children's Day!

DINNER TO THEUNIVERSITIES ANDLEGAL ACADEMICS’DINNERThe Dinner to the Universities was held this yearon 18 March 2008 and was attended by 167undergraduates (in law and other disciplines)from 24 Universities as well as 60 seniormembers of the Inn. Master Treasurer’sencouraging yet realistic speech on training forthe Bar was very well-received. The LegalAcademics Dinner was held on the 28 April and was attended by 85 academics from 42Universities and 68 senior members of the Inn.Master Treasurer took the opportunity toencourage the academics to inform their best andbrightest students about a career at the Bar aswell as encouraging those in attendance toconsider submitting entries for the Inner Temple Book Prize. The E&T Departmentwould like to thank the members of the Inn whosupported these two events, which were enjoyedby all.
QUESTION & ANSWERDAY FOR PROSPECTIVESTUDENTSOn Sunday 15 June, the E&T Department, inconjunction with the Junior Bar Association, willbe holding a ‘Prospective Students’ Question &Answer Day’ for undergraduates interested in acareer at the Bar. There will be sessions on theCPE, funding and joining the Inn, how to puttogether a legal CV (including mini-pupillage),BVC on-line & the BVC, involvement withInner Temple Societies, life as a pupil/juniortenant, OLPAS, other options besides tenancyand interview tips and mock interviews. ITSA BALLTo mark the 400 year anniversary of the grantingof the Royal Charter, ITSA’s Ball, held on Friday4 April, was themed ‘Through the Ages’ – a tourthrough the last 400 years in one evening.Students escaping assessments on the BVC weremet with fire breathers and performers as theybegan the evening with a champagne reception.The Drama Society entertained guests withJacobean short plays in the Luncheon Room,while jesters juggled and minstrels played in theParliament Chamber. Dinner, based on aGeorgian theme, was held in the Hall and wasaccompanied by a harpsicordist. Catering, asalways, provided a fantastic three course meal.After dinner, guests were transported to the 20thand 21st Century, dancing to DJ Rock in theHall, with those looking for quieterentertainment retiring to the Parliament Chamberto be entertained by Victorian comical magic.Our thanks go to the E&T and CateringDepartments without whom the event would nothave been possible or such a tremendous success.

APRIL NEWPRACTITIONERS’ADVOCACY & ETHICSWEEKENDIn April, the E&T Department held the first of itstwo annual Advocacy and Ethics weekends forNew Practitioners. The weekend was accreditedfor 17 CPD hours including 9 hours of advocacytraining and 3 hours of ethics training and wasattended by 54 junior barristers. The courseallowed NPs the opportunity to cross examine realexpert medical witnesses and to tackle a series ofhypothetical ethical problems with the assistanceof real solicitors. This was the first course to beheld at Wotton House in Surrey and was a greatsuccess. We were privileged enough to have MasterHutton give the after-dinner speech on theSaturday night. Overall it was a very successfuland well-received weekend and the E&TDepartment would like to thank all those whogave up their weekend to help.
APPEALS ADVOCACY COURSEFollowing the success of the Serious SexualOffences course last year, the Inn continued itscommitment to providing high qualitycontinuing professional development forestablished practitioners by holding an AppealsAdvocacy seminar at the Inn. Saturday 10 Mayturned out to be the hottest day of the year so farso we offer our apologies to the 140 practitionerswho attended the seminar for depriving them ofthe good weather outside. However, we hope the“toasty” conditions in the Parliament Chamberwere mitigated by the presence of acknowledgedexperts in this field: Master Bingham, LordRodger of Earlsferry, Master Treasurer, MasterHooper, Master Dingemans, David Perry QC,Master Giffin, Master Temple, Michael TurnerQC, Hugh Southey, Master Arbuthnot, RuthPope from the Criminal Appeals Office andPenny Barrett from the CCRC. Some of thepractitioners were further denied the goodweather on the Sunday morning when theyparticipated in specialist appeals advocacytraining. We were privileged to have theassistance of Masters Hughes, Toulson and Rixwho presided in each group and gave invaluablefeedback to the participants. Feedback for theevent as a whole has been extremely positive andthe Inn looks forward to developing its CPDprogramme in the coming years. The E&TDepartment would like to thank all the speakersand advocacy trainers and, in particular, MasterKorner who organised the event.

INNER TEMPLE DRAMA SOCIETYPERFORMANCE
On the 15 May the Drama Society performedThe Devil’s Law-Case, a tragicomedy by JohnWebster. The Devil’s Law-Case is one of onlythree surviving plays attributable to Websteralone (the others being The Duchess of Malfi andThe White Devil). Unlike his tragedies, this playhas been largely ignored. The Drama Societydecided that the 400th Anniversary of the granting of the Royal Charter was the perfect time for a revival.
The performance was attended by 150 membersof the Inn and their guests. Master Treasurer waskind enough to introduce the play and the castthen did an admirable job of bringing the play tolife. A highly enjoyable time was had by all andthe evening was a huge success.

OBSERVING INTERNATIONAL ELECTIONS
The Chairman of the CentralElection Commission ofUzbekistan invited internationalobservers from many countries to
observe the Presidential Election which washeld on 23 December 2007. More than 250international observers from 30 countriesworld-wide accepted the invitation.
The Malaysian delegation to Uzbekistanconsisted of six members, including Mr S.Radhakrishnan, a member of the Inn andSecretary of the Malaysian Inner TempleAlumni Association. He gives an account of hisvisit below.
“Uzbekistan is located in Central Asia andis north of Afghanistan. The population is 26 million, of which 16 million are eligible tovote. Voting is not compulsory. Citizens areeligible to vote over the age of 18.
The election was conducted in 8260 pollingstations throughout the 14 regions ofUzbekistan. There were four candidatesincluding the incumbent President, Mr IslamKarimov.
We were given the freedom to choose the location for the observation and I decided to concentrate on the capital city,Tashkent. I visited several polling centres on 23 December 2007, including the centre wherethe incumbent President cast his vote.
There was a very high turnout of voters.More than 90% of those eligible cast their vote.Islam Karimov won the election, collecting 13 million of the total votes cast.
The election was conducted in an orderlymanner and everything went smoothly.Uzbekistan is a young country and if given theopportunity to develop, would do well.”

The Temple Church is a beautifulbuilding: a perfect setting for our fullprogramme of services, concerts andlectures, and a welcome oasis of peaceand quiet within yards of Fleet Street.Here we can stand back from theCity’s busy-ness and rediscover ourplace within 800 years of history.

700 years ago, the Order of the Temple was inturmoil, its members under arrest, and itsGrand Master soon to be burned at the stake.Its main church in England, at the New Templein London, survived the suppression of theOrder in 1312, and escaped (by a whisker) theGreat Fire of London in 1666, only to beravaged by fire during the Blitz. Nevertheless,it remains one of the most important survivingmedieval monuments in London, with superblate Romanesque sculpture, luminous earlyGothic architecture, a magnificent series ofmedieval monuments, and major post-Reformation furnishings by Sir ChristopherWren and others. The Church is among themost historic and lovely of London’s churches;and this spring we mounted an exhibition inthe Round itself to illustrate the Church’schanging appearance over eight centuries.
The V&A lent plaster-casts, taken in timefor the Great Exhibition, of four of theChurch’s effigies; they lay on plinths, majesticand entire, next to the stone originals that were

damaged in 1941. The Bowes Museum lent theonly two columns known to survive from theWrenian organ-screen of 1682, dismantled inthe 1840s. And photographs from Inner andMiddle Temple, the Antiquaries, Ashmolean,Guildhall Library and Museum of London,traced the Church, its history and the –dramatic – changes made over time to itsdecoration.

worked at Merriment Gardens and GreatDixter House & Garden.
JOHN PHILLIPSFurthermore, the HeadGardener is delightedto announce that JohnPhillips has joined theGarden full-time as anapprentice. Prior to hisappointment, Johnworked part-time forthe last ten months in the Garden.
ANIA JOHNSONAnia has joined theCollector’s Departmentas the new ManagementAccountant. She comesto the Inn after severalyears with theHaberdashers’Company. In her spare
time Ania runs a weekend school for Polishchildren.
RITA MCLEANRita retired at the end of April. She joined theInn as a Hall waitress in 1993. She was thenpromoted to a Bench waitress eight years later.Rita is held in great affection by from hercolleagues, as she has always been a veryenthusiastic and cheerful member of the team. Rita’s role was varied, she kept the CateringDepartment and Treasury Office well stocked,with all the daily essentials – such as coffee!Her main role was as cashier for the Masters of the Bench; which she performed withaccuracy and humour, for which she will begreatly missed. We wish Rita all the best in her retirement with her children and many grandchildren!
