News Briefs from arouNd saNelspruit - Residents of Kriel want their town removed from Emalahleni local municipality. They accused town Mayor Salome Sithole of ignoring their complaints. Public Protec-tor Thuli Madonsela spoke to the residents on Tuesday. She said issues included sewerage, poor road infrastructure, insufficient street lighting, and delays in the provision of low cost housing. It was alleged that hospitals had insufficient medical supplies and staff, and a mobile clinic was no longer operational. Med-ical facilities meant to operate for 24 hours only opened for a few hours, said Madonsela. Sithole said the issue of street lighting and potholes are in their integrated development plan for the area. Madonsela would work with the Mpumalanga government and officials from the Emalahleni municipality to address the issues raised.

Cape Town - Mayor Patricia de Lille has announced that the Cape Town Civic Centre will open on weekends and holidays to al-low more people to view the Nelson Man-dela exhibition. “Since opening we have been inundated with requests from individuals, community groups and schools wishing to view the in-stallation. Madiba continues to inspire, unite, and symbolise the hope we all have for our wonderful country.” De Lille said it

would culminate in the city adopting a new set of values based on the former president’s values and principles. The exhibition, which runs until April 2014, is made up of images and multimedia displays which trace Man-dela’s relationship with Cape Town. There are videos of key events in Mandela’s life and more than 200 photographs. Mayor De Lille added that the centre would be open between 10:00 and 16:00 on week-ends and public holidays, from this week.

Men held over army ammo

Brig Mathapelo Mangwani

Pretoria - Two men accused of dealing in stolen army ammunition, Dave Sheer Guns company director Gareth de Nysschen and general manager Efthimios Demis Kara-mitsos appeared in the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. This follows a military police raid at the Midrand compound of cash-in-transit com-pany SVB on Monday, in which R4 rifle am-munition allegedly stolen from the army was confiscated. The raid followed the suspen-sion of Brigadier Mathapelo Mangwani, of the Central Firearms Registry, and Brigadier Hlamane Mahlabane, who was in charge of firearms compliance. The two allegedly took bribes in exchange for issuing gun licences to Dave Sheer Guns. Spent cartridges and live rounds of ammuni-tion bearing military stamps were reportedly found during the raid. The bullets were allegedly stolen from the military and sold to Dave Sheer Guns, which in turn allegedly sold them to SVB. De Nysschen’s bail was opposed and the State asked that his bail application be post-poned to Friday. Two soldiers accused of the illegal sale army ammunition and the son of one of the soldiers also appeared.

Mnyamandawo gunman heldCrime [email protected]

This week Joburg police arrested a man who allegedly tried to rob a

woman at gunpoint in Nugget Street, according to police Corporate Commu-nications Officer Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele. He says the man pointed a gun at the woman and demanded her cellphone.

“He then dragged her into a nearby building called Mnyamandawo and assaulted her. Police got a tipoff about the incident and went into the building, where they found the man still hold-ing the gun, they disarmed and arrested him. The gun was a 9mm pistol with no serial number and loaded with seven bullets.” He adds that the man faces charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and

ammunition, pointing with a firearm and assault. W/O Mbele adds that two men were arrested for com-mon robbery at corner Jeppe and Fraser Street on Tuesday. “It is alleged that the suspects robbed a 36-year-old female drive who had stopped at a traffic light in Fraser Street. Her window was slightly opened when two suspects approached her. They pulled down the window and stole her cellphone and ran away. She screamed for help and community members chased the suspects,” W/O Mbele says. He adds that a police officers on crime prevention patrol managed to apprehend one suspect, and his accomplice was arrested by community members in a nearby tavern. “The cellphone was not re-covered and investigations continue to determine if the

suspects may be linked to other robberies in which the same modus operandi was used,” W/O Mbele adds.

AU holds disease summitAbuja - The AU executive is discussing progress in the fight against HIV/Aids, TB and malaria. Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister Tedros Ghebreyesus said Ethiopia proposes to establish an African Centre for Diseases Control and Prevention (African–CDC) or Health Commission for Africa under the AU. “The centre re-search and deal with major health problems,” he said. Nigerian Foreign Minister Nurudeen Mohammed said: “May malaria be rolled out and development rolled in all African countries.” The summit will “adopt a set of actions to enhance efforts towards reversing the impact of the diseases by ensuring universal access to services and strengthened health systems,” the AU said. Aids, TB and malaria are the major diseases afflicting the continent. Although health experts have focused attention on Aids, malaria remains one of the major killer diseases in Africa. Victims are mainly pregnant women and children because of their vulnerability. The WHO malaria report for 2012 said the disease was concentrated in 14 countries, which accounted for 80% of malaria deaths. It said the DR Congo and Ni-geria were most affected in sub-Saharan Africa.

More protesters killedCairo - Seven people have died and 260 injured in clashes between police and supporters of deposed President Mohammed Morsi, Senior Health Min-istry official Khaled el-Khateib said on Monday. The Muslim Brotherhood said police used live ammunition against protesters. The state news agency said 17 policemen were injured, and 401 people have been arrested. Thousands of Morsi’s supporters were protesting to press demands that Morsi be reinstated. Egypt’s military deposed him on July 3 after mass protests calling for him to step down. His supporters say he was ousted by a military coup. Riot police fired teargas at protesters around Ramses Square, who retaliated with rocks. Last week, 53 pro-Morsi demonstrators were killed outside the Republican Guard compound, four soldiers also died there. On Monday, US Deputy State Secretary William Burns held talks with interim leaders and army chief. Washington has been criticised by both Morsi’s supporters and opponents for what each side per-ceives as support for their rival’s position.

Mogadishu – Two people have been killed after a suicide bomber rammed a vehicle loaded with explosives into an African peacekeeping convoy, officials have announced. Islamist militants al-Shabab, who carried out the deadly assault on a nearby UN base last month, and another bombing in a market last week, claimed re-sponsibility for the attack. No peacekeepers died but several people were wounded. Black smoke billowed into the sky above the city near the UN Development Programme (UNDP) base where 22 people were killed in an al-Shabaab assault last month. “We carried 10 injured civil-ians, including two women,” ambulance service director Abdikadir Abdirahman said. Al-Shabab spokesman Sheikh Abu Musab said the convoy had American officials. “The Ameri-cans were our main target,” he said. A diplomatic source said the convoy had no Americans. Al-Shabab was ejected from Mogadishu by So-mali and African forces last year, raising hopes of security. But the fighters have kept up attacks and control large rural areas, challenging the young government of President Hassan Mohamoud.

Govt troops battle M23 fightersKinshasa - Heavy fight-ing between the DR Congo army and two militias has erupted in the east, officials have confirmed. On one front, the army is fighting M23 rebels, while there have been battles with the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a Ugandan Muslim militia. The gov-ernment of President Jo-seph Kabila said it killed

120 M23 fighters north of Goma, but the rebels de-nied the claim. Col Felix Basse, spokes-person for Monusco, said: “We cannot ascertain casu-alties, but we observed 500 civilians fleeing the area.” Ugandan army spokesper-son Lt Nisiima Rwemiju-ma said fighting with ADF, which allegedly has links to Somalia’s al-Shabaab

Conakry - Dozens of people were wounded on Mon-day in ethnic clashes between supporters and opponents of jailed Liberian leader Charles Taylor. Police said violence broke out when petrol station guards from the Guerze tribe accused an ethnic Konianke youth of steal-ing, tortured and killed him. Violence spread to the provincial capital N’Zerekore, leaving dozens injured and homes destroyed. Security forces failed to restore peace. Police said many had been wounded. “They are fighting with machetes, axes, sticks and stones. The situation is extremely serious.” Communal violence is common near the Liberian bor-der, where clashes between the tribes regularly break out over religious and other grievances. The indigenous Guerze are mostly Christian or animist, while the Ko-niankes are Muslims considered to be close to Liberia’s Mandingo ethnic group. In Liberia’s civil war, which ended in 2003, rebels fighting ex-president Charles Taylor drew much of their support from the Mandingo community. The Guerze people, known as Kpelle in Liberia, were considered as supporters of forces loyal to Taylor, who was jailed last year for war crimes.

The just-launched Africans for Africa Network aims to change the prevailing narrative of Africa, from

one driven by Western media to one that reflects the strengths and empowerment of the continent, across a variety African-centred platforms. The Africans for Africa Network is the brainchild of Vanessa Perumal, a Johannesburg-based champion of citizen and media activism and founder of the JT Comms African Media Resource Centre of Excellence. Perumal is working in partnership with international relations strategist, Beth Arendse and youth and eco-nomic development expert, Nomsa Mazwai, along with a number of other global African networks, including Mali’s renowned FestivalauDesert With this innovative movement being spearheaded through the JT Comms African Media Resource Centre of Excellence, the aim of Africans for Africa Network is to engage in a series of dialogues, set up exchanges between artists on the continent, create new markets for Africa’s cultural content and products and take owner-ship of the space in which Africa’s voice is expressed through music and culture in international arenas. The intervention of thought leaders in the cultural industries will play a key role in the movement. “I am amazed by the groundswell of support this initiative has generated across Africa - from global A List musicians, to journalists and social entrepreneurs across the cultural industries,” comments Perumal. “This is indicative of the will of ordinary Africans to set the agenda for change on the continent and drive the production of authentic content which frames Africa in a positive light. “Africa already has a framework of treaties and agree-ments that facilitate this type of dialogue across the continent,” adds Arendse. “What we sometimes lack is coordination in civil society to generate the substance the activation of these vehicles depends on. I believe the Africans for Africa Network will be instrumental in providing content and programming for such instru-ments as the African Charter for Cultural Renaissance and a myriad of bilateral activations in Africa.” This partnership has anchored the inauguration of the Africans for Africa Network, with Perumal, Arendse and Mazwai meeting with the Festival of the Desert’s executive team in Paris in July for a planning session. Arising out of this, a number of Africans for Africa Network’s first programmes will include exchanges with artists from the Sahel region in North Africa, with South African musicians and artists. Africans for Africa Network’s youth coordinator, so-cial entrepreneur and SAMA award-winning performer, Nomsa Mazwai says the initiative will provide a vehicle for both youth and economic development in the cul-tural industries. “We must recognise that the strength of the world’s economy is shifting to the south, with emerging econo-mies like Brazil and India joining China to drive global economic agendas. The future markets for the cultural industries are in Africa, and we need to position our-selves as Africans to take ownership of this space and empower ourselves economically in it.” Formally announcing the Africans for Africa Network’s agenda this week, Perumal outlined a programme which includes using cultural dialogue as a way of changing the African narrative through partnerships with conti-nental projects on global stages. Ongoing exchanges, topic specific dialogues and the creation of platforms for African artists will take place throughout the year. This will be effected through a network of partnerships with various groups and organisations. Phase one of the Africans for Africa Network’s pro-gramme is to be anchored by Mali’s Festival of the Desert’s global call to action to anchor the banned and exiled Festival through varying interventions. These in-clude securing performance spaces in existing festivals, assisting with profiling the efforts of the global call to action and supporting the Timbuktu return home con-cert which is expected to take place in January 2014.For more contact [email protected]

The JHC team

The Ekhaya Neighbourhood con-ducted a pre-Mandela Day youth soccer tournament at the BG Alex-ander sports complex in Hillbrow. The youth teams that participated in the event included Connaught, Bad Boyz, Johannesburg Housing Company, Ma Afrika Tikkun. It was a day of fun in commemorat-ing the life of freedom struggle icon and former South African President Nelson Mandela. About a hundred spectators from the Hillbrow and Joubert Park neighbourhood attended the event and enjoyed watching the young players as they displayed their abili-ties in the game.
