Packaging giant TC Transcontinental has taken every award in the 2019 PAC Canadian Leadership Awards Sustainable Packaging Category, according to an article in Ink World Magazine. The award winning products were their stand-up pouches for brands Harney & Sons Fine Teas and Les Aliments Jardi, which include barriers for freshness and strength that are still easily and 100% recyclable.

In addition, two more of their packaging designs took Silver Awards in Rebrand, Food & Beverage and in Rebrand, Non-Food categories. Their pouch for Diamond Brand Shelled Walnuts boasted barrier and zipper features, while their Golfgreen Nitrogrow pouch was designed to offer a new look for the brand.

Working from Chicago, Thomas Morin will be the new President of TC Transcontinental Packaging, says Ink World Magazine. His position will report to François Olivier, who is the president and CEO of TC Transcontinental corporation. Morin will be responsible for establishing the company’s long-term goals, executing their business plan, and expanding the sales of their world-wide packaging sector, in addition to other aspects of their business. Morin wasn’t promoted internally, but rather is an external hire. Before this, he previously worked as VP of South East Asia for Amcor Flexible Packaging Asia Pacific in Singapore.

Amcor has officially completed its acquisition of fellow packaging giant Bemis, according to Flexible Packaging Magazine. The merger closed on June 11th, with the combined company known as Amcor plc.. Amcor already operates out of hundreds of locations in more than 40 countries, generating revenues of more than $13.4 billion last year from the various industries it services, and Amcor’s CEO Ron Delia was quoted in the article stating that the Bemis acquisition will add to and expand the company’s capabilities and footprint.

Fortis Solutions Group has acquired California’s Label Technology, according to Flexible Packaging Magazine. The acquired company has been in business for more than 30 years, and is an award winning producer of flexible packaging, stand-up pouches, and pressure sensitive labels. They serve a variety of markets, including foods, health, and cosmetics.

David Bankson, President and CEO of Label Technology, was quoted in the article saying that this acquisition helps them meet their long held goal of achieving national reach. The company now join Fortis’s 13 existing locations.

ProAmpac’s graphics departments have received a total of 10 awards from the Flexographic Technical Association, says an article in Ink World Magazine.

The Wrightstown, WI branch won 7 awards. ProAmpac’s Bob Fiala, process engineer, was quoted in the article saying that their win was in the Coated and Film Process category, which he said is a difficult competition.

In addition, the graphics department of Westfield, MA won 3 awards for their work on Splenda sugar packets. They took awards in the Mid Web Uncoated Paper, the Wide Web Coated Paper, and the Wide Web Uncoated Paper categories.

Diamond Packaging has received a Gold award by this year’s EcoVadis Corporate Social Responsibility Assessment, according to Ink World Magazine. The award is based on the company’s stewardship of social and environmental concerns in their business. Not only was Diamond Packaging ranked in the top 1% of companies evaluated, but this is also the third year in a row that they have received their gold rating.

Further, in the environmental judging category, Diamond was the highest ranked company. This judging criteria rates companies on both how the company does business and how their products affect the environment post-use.

Lintec has developed and launched a new labelstock that sticks even in oily applications, according to an article in Labels & Labeling. These new materials can be applied in applications like food, cosmetics, and industrial, to oily surfaces that would ordinarily need to be cleaned or degreased in order for the label to adhere to it. According to the article, this helps save companies in two ways: the time spent cleaning the surface and money spent on the cleaners to do it. The labels do not need to be printed with a special ink in order to function.

Denny Handly, a student at Brunel University London, has developed a new kind of bio-degradable packaging material, according to an article in Packaging Strategies. The new material is called Bio-Peel and it uses the wasted husk materials from juiced fruits, bio-polymers, and vegetable glycerin to create an environmentally conscious and environmentally sourced packaging material. Its creator, Denny Handley, is quoted in the article saying that the material is very strong, and the article describes it as both strong and malleable.

Hanley believes, that, based on the opaque and rough look, it’s future probably isn’t intraditional stores and carton applications. Rather, he believes that it will be more successful in less professional settings like farmers markets and, potentially, in producing solid objects even outside of the packaging industry.

Flexographic machinery manufacturers Paper Converting Machine Company and Hudson-Sharp will be joining as of October 1st, says FlexoGlobal. Both companies are the child organizations of the same parent company, Barry-Wehmiller, and both have histories dating back over a century. PCMC produces converting materials for tissues, towels, packaging, etc. while Hudson-Sharp is known for bag converting equipment. The American locations of both companies are based in Green Bay, Wisconsin. As a part of the arrangement, Rich Faber, the operations leader for Hudson-Sharp in Wisconsin will now be the operations leader for PCMC across the globe.

North Carolina based pressure-sensitive adhesive coating manufacturer Acucote has increased its pharmaceutical portfolio by adding 19 more pressure-sensitive paper and film constructions, says an article appearing in FlexoGlobal. Several products in this portfolio is focused on providing tamper-evident protection for the end users of the pharmaceutical materials that their products carry.

Acucote’s marketing manager Melissa Harton is quoted in the article saying that the pharmaceutical industry they service is continuing to grow as baby-boomers continue to age. She also stated, with regards to the capabilities of these products, that their label products work with flexo and thermal transfer applications.

She graduated from Georgia State University with an MBA in PR, Marketing, and Business and has spent the past 11 years of her marketing career at Pamarco. Pamarco colleague John Rastetter, VP of sales and marketing, was quoted in the article saying she was hugely impactful to their organization and that he expects she will have a similar effect on the FTA.

Katie Graham has been heavily involved with the FTA already, receiving an 2019 FTA President’s Award in May of this year and being on numerous FTA committees and organizations. She has co-chaired the association’s new Women in Flexo initiative.

Packaging producer Parkside has won a Dieline award for a compostable potato chip package they created, says Labels & Labeling. This is the world’s first compostable potato chip bag. Dieline awards recognize best in the industry of packaging design. The packaging provides the barriers necessary to sustain the food inside, and also is compostable within 26 weeks.

The compostable package was created for the Two Farmers brand and is a part of Parkside’s Park2Nature product family.
