Yours sincerely,

Phikyin Loo

It’s exciting to see everything is in place for our Back to School (“BTS”) campaign. The Experience New Worlds website is up and running (www.pelikan.com/kids) and promotions are being done via various channels such as advertising through online and print media, as well as Facebook page (www.facebook.com/mypelikan) for our fans. We hope to elevate our brand presence thanks to the unique look of our Experience New Worlds theme which will synchronize with the BTS 2014 campaigns held by Pelikan sales and marketing organizations in Europe, Americas and Middle East. Please communicate to your friends and family as much as possible about our BTS campaign and pick up a brochure of our BTS products and its prices from the PASB showroom/reception today!

I would also like to bring your attention to an important day of the year, the Universal Children’s Day which is observed on 20 November every year. Children have always been at the heart of our business so it’s fitting for us to observe the day together. For this year’s Universal Children’s Day, much importance is stressed on children’s rights because it is the 25th anniversary of the “Convention on the Rights of the Child”. You can learn more about it at our Link to the World section.

Happy reading!

The world celebrates the Universal Children’s Day on 20 November. The day is observed to promote the welfare of the world’s children, guided by the United Nation’s Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). What are the Children’s rights as outlined by the CRC? Read on to learn more about it.

Article

Know Your Children’s Rights

Twenty five years ago, the world made a promise to children: when it adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) on 20 November 1989. “That we would do everything in our power to protect and promote their rights – to survive and thrive, to learn and grow, to make their voices heard and to help them reach their full potential.• We promised every child the right to survive and be healthy.• We promised all children the right to a name and an identity.• We promised every girl and boy the right to an education. • We promised that no child should be subjected to violence.”

Core Principles of Children’s Rights

The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) has 54 articles in all.

Enshrined in the CRC are four general principles that extend legal recognition to the rights of children.

1. Article 2: Non-discriminationState parties must ensure that all children within their Jurisdiction enjoy their rights. No child should suffer discrimination. This applies to every child, “irrespective of the child’s or his or her parent’s or legal guardian’s race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national, ethnic or social origin, property, disability, birth or other status”.

2. Article 3: Best Interests of the ChildWhen governments make decisions that affect children, the best interests of children must be a primary consideration. This principle relates to decisions by courts of law, administrative authorities, legislative bodies and both public and private social-welfare institutions.

3. Article 6: The Right to Life, Survival and DevelopmentThis article is related to the right to survival and to development, which governments must ensure “to the maximum extent possible”. The term “development” in this context should be interpreted in a broad sense, referring to physical, mental, emotional, cognitive, social and cultural development.

4. Article 12: The Views of the ChildChildren have a right to participate in all matters affecting them, and those views should be given due weight “in accordance with the age and maturity of the child”. In short, children have the right to be heard and to have their views taken seriously.
