The Idea• “An exploration of youth via an elderly perspective.”

• Elderly people in a social event, they start laughing and throwing their board game around acting in a violent manner. As build up to ‘drop’ approaches, shot of clock hands moving backwards (sped up). The song drops and the couple go outside. Elderly people relive youth in their current bodies.

• Reminiscing their youth.

• Influences: Hoppipolla - Sigur Ros

• Songs we want to use: Dayvan Cowboy - Boards of Canada

Time Lapse Video• I really like motion time lapse videos. I think

they are incredibly atmospheric especially when other video techniques such as stop motion or slow motion are also incorporated. The video does not necessarily have to have a real narrative storyline, however, obviously a linear presentation of the passing of time will look good. A lot of time lapse videos I have seen start off with regular clips of maybe a city, then go on to ‘epic’ shots of the stars and the sky at night time.

Audience

•Not necessarily my video, but videos like this can be used for advertisements – so people who go to the cinema, watch TV at home etc.

•They may also just be for people who surf video sites such as vimeo.com or youtube.com.

Editing•Saturate the colours so that they look

slightly more vibrant and also make them look warmer.

•Slow motion.

•Stop motion – achieved by a video camera rather than a photograph camera to achieve a better affect and have more control over it.

•Fast motion – time lapse.

Conventions

• Conventions of the video will probably be the use of unconventional music. Often, I find that time lapse videos are so atmospheric because they use very obscure sub genres of music such as ambient or house music. i.e. Passion Pit in the CHINA video I mentioned previously is not a popular song.

• Obviously the actual use of a time lapse effect is a convention of the video too, and shots of the sky are also very popular within this genre of video.

Genre• I am not entirely sure what genre of music I would really

use for the video. Probably ambient, classical, electronic indie folkstep or just folk. i.e. Alt-J or Fleet Foxes.

• However, I know that it needs to be a good song that is atmospheric and not popular or known by a large amount of people.

• Perhaps similar artists to Passion Pit. Something by Fleet Foxes (though it is very acoustic) might be good as well because a lot of their music is sort of ambient in a beautifully haunting way due to their harmonic singing. I think this could create a really influential effect on the audience.

The Idea• “An exploration of youth via an elderly perspective.”

• Starts off with government warning i.e. “This film is the property of the UK Government.” Actor in chair, other actor reaches over to turn on camera (very amateur looking). They begin to recall the events over Dayvan Cowboy between flashes of good memories about the newly founded drug, Bath Salts. However, the song stops and there is silence. Shot of eyes and pupils dilating. Scary, ambient music comes in and the actors continue to reminisce about the terrible drug again between shots of scary things that happened to them. i.e. cannibalism

• Music to use: Dayvan Cowboy - Boards of Canada

• Non fiction style.

Influence of Research

•Conducting research on my chosen genres has made me realise that there are a very limited amount of music videos that actually accompany songs under this musical category. Due to this niche in the market, I have been inspired even more so to create a music video for ambient/downtempo/worldbeat music, where the visual aspects of the project are appropriate for the audio.

•I think that it should be interesting to create a storyboard-like music video with such ambient music because it will add to the ‘mood’ of the story, hopefully creating more of a lasting impact on the audience.

•I also noticed (however it could be due to the genuine antiquity of the videos) that in the Boards of Canada videos, the clips look very dated. This is an affect that I would like to apply to my videos as I think that it could give the story character. I also like the idea of using documentary clips in a music video so perhaps this is something that I could ‘forge’ in a way in attempt to generate the same effect.
