Dear Friends oF thE Kino Border Initiative,When Pope Francis initiated his Jubilee Year of Mercy in December 2015, he was responding to the dire circumstances faced by our migrant brothers and sisters worldwide—now numbering 65 million, a monumental humanitarian crisis—and the great need for us to “contemplate the mystery of mercy…the ultimate and supreme act by which God comes to meet us.” This divine gift belongs to us all, and emanates outward each time we open our hearts to those who are suffering or seeking safer, better lives.

At the Kino Border Initiative, the Holy Father’s leadership on behalf of migrants and refugees encourages us every day, and speaks to the very essence of our work, offering aid, accompaniment, and advocacy to the migrants we encounter and sponsoring education and research to support more compassionate immigration policies in the U.S. where the futures of 11.5 million undocumented immigrants hang in the balance.

In 2016, our direct aid and educational efforts reached more people than ever. We served 46,820 meals to 8,383 individuals, and offered first aid to 3,784 migrants requiring medical attention. We sheltered 380 women and children at Nazareth House, less than the previous year, but for longer stays as we assisted many in preparing asylum claims. We organized 66 immersion experiences, hosted 73 KBI visits, and offered 47 educational presentations. And as we look to the next generation of advocates, we are inspired by the young participants in our first Walking in Mercy Youth Summit and Leadership Days, as well as 11 Kino Teens groups, not only in Southern Arizona, but across the country. In addition, KBI staff traveled to Washington, D.C., several U.S. states, and Guatemala to participate in various delegations, conferences, coalitions, and meetings on migrant rights and border issues.

In these endeavors, we walk in mercy together, supported each step of the way by your contributions, volunteer work, and prayers. This journey we are privileged and humbled to undertake brings us full circle—that which we offer with humility, charity, and empathy emboldens us to be more generous, more loving. Thank you for being instruments of God’s mercy, and for helping to create a world of greater peace, justice, and compassion.

In gratitude,Rev. Sean Carroll, S.J.Executive Director

Sean Carroll, S.J.Director Ejecutivo

T H E P O W E R O F M E R C Y:

Maria’s Story

We shared Maria’s story last year, after she and her children fled Honduras to arrive at the U.S.–Mexico border after a two-year journey. With the help of the Kino Border Initiative, and local advocacy and church groups in Sahuarita, Arizona, she and her family found safety, support, and community during the asylum process.

M A R I A’ S J O U R N E YRunning a small market and raising four children on her own, Maria faced plenty of challenges with the dedication and stamina common to mothers. But she also endured several years of extortion from the formidable Mara–18, the local arm of an international criminal organization. When Maria was unable to pay these “fees,” the gang threatened to take her two oldest children as “payment.” Her decision to head North was difficult, but also straightforward—when one’s children are in danger and law enforcement is unresponsive, it is time to flee.

Traveling nearly 3,000 miles, Maria stopped repeatedly to care for her children and take odd jobs to earn more money to continue. Through unimaginable stresses and continual obstacles, Maria reassured her family, kept them together, and never lost hope. It took two years, but they finally arrived in Nogales, Sonora where the KBI was there to help.

T H E R O L E O F T H E K B I A N D I T S PA R T N E R S Once at the border, Maria and her children stayed at the KBI shelter for three months while advocacy staff obtained documentation and a pro-bono lawyer for their asylum claims, and put together a plan with partner organizations to ensure a safe, welcoming place for the family in the U.S. while they awaited their court dates. The Green Valley–Sahuarita Samaritans and the Good Shepherd United Church of Christ of Sahuarita stepped in to sponsor Maria and her children, and support them through the asylum process.

Since the summer of 2016, they have aided Maria’s family in a range of ways—offering transportation and interpreter assistance; re-enrolling the children in school and setting up tutoring; obtaining

low-cost medical, counseling and legal services; assisting with living expenses; and providing neighborly companionship. For Maria and her family, Sahuarita has become home as the children, ages 3 to 15, make new friends, master English, and learn to swim—one of her daughters runs on her school’s track team. Meanwhile, Maria volunteers with the Good Shepherd food bank to give back to their new community.

T H E J O U R N E Y C O N T I N U E SWith our partner organizations— churches, community groups, advocacy agencies, and legal experts—the KBI extends a helping hand to migrants in need, and offers accompaniment and solace in their dark hours. But Maria’s journey, and those of others who seek safety and better lives, began before she arrived at the KBI, and continues after, as communities as close to the border as Sahuarita or as far as River Falls, Wisconsin and Chicago embrace immigrant families and take up the work of mercy.

The power of mercy lies in the conviction of communities to step up and forward, to protect and advocate for those most in need. Often, a single action can spur the process, rippling outward to build momentum. At the KBI, Maria shared her experience and dreams with Samaritan volunteer Linda Cohen, who called on her church, Good Shepherd, and its pastor, long-time migrant advocate Reverend Randy Mayer, to invite Maria’s family into their community. The congregation responded by opening their hearts and homes, with Linda’s family hosting Maria and her children during those first months.

We see this at the KBI every day—an encounter, a recognition of ourselves in others, a pledge of accompaniment, a commitment of resources, time, assistance, friendship. Once the power of mercy takes hold, it can become inspiring and unstoppable, as we stand with migrant families and those seeking asylum to let them know they are not alone.

Maria’s lawyers presented her family’s asylum case in March. In June, they’ll learn the results, with their wider family of church and community beside them.

2016 Pope Francis AwardFather Sean presents Jeanne and Jack O’Brien with the Pope Francis Award, a migrant portrait painted and donated by Pamela Hoffmeister, for their exceptional support of the KBI’s mission. Photo by Larry Hanelin.

At the Sixth Annual KBI Dinner in February 2016, Phoenix-based supporters Jack and Jeanne O’Brien received the Pope Francis Award for extraordinary service to the Kino Border Initiative. As members of the Order of Malta, a worldwide, Catholic lay organization offering aid and advocacy to those most in need, they first learned about the KBI from Bishop Kicanas of Tucson while on an Order-related trip to the city. They visited the KBI and, moved by the migrants’ stories—Jack sees in them the same desire for a better life that brought his parents from Ireland and, later, his Mexican-born employees at his truck dealership to the U.S.—they became committed champions of the KBI, helping to secure an Order of Malta grant for our work.

After raising six children in their blended family and now enjoying the pleasures of 18 grandchildren, Jack and Jeanne have retired since selling the dealership in 2007. These days, they devote even more time and energy to their philanthropic endeavors, Order of Malta activities, and the KBI’s mission and ministry. The O’Briens see their contributions and hands-on service as a way to accompany migrants, and the KBI is deeply grateful for their dedication, generosity, and advocacy.
