A logo is a graphic mark or emblem
commonly used by commercial enter-
prises, organizations and even individu-
als to aid and promote instant public
recognition. Logos are either purely
graphic (symbols/icons) or are com-
posed of the name of the organization
(a logotype or wordmark).

Many clients, whether creating a
company or reworking their look, are
in need of a mark that will, not only
identify their work or business but
identify themselves as individuals. I
have always interviewed each client
not only as a business, but as people.
Who are they? What do they do in
their spare time? What shows do they
watch on TV? What would they like
to be identified with. What does their
company represent to them and their
clients. Classic, illustrative, colorful or
solid: each mark is carefully crafted to
suit the needs requested.

Case Study >>Sunburst Productions / Logo / Redesign
Looking to make a comeback in the dance music scene, night club promoter Jack Steinhour
required an update from his old look. His specifications were for his new mark to resemble
the old (in concept) as to not distance Sunburst’s fan base. For the rework I used personally
hand drawn graffiti-esque font for the type. The spiral sun around the S was later reworked
to provide a cleaner mark.
Case Study >>Pretty Ugly Tees / Logo
Specifications as required by founders Michael Harper & Mike Schep was for the logo to be
modern, clear and rough around the edges, representing them as individuals. A thick bordered
outline of a tee with "silk-screened" text and ink splotches gave the desired impression, that
this company was completely homegrown in a garage.

Client >> Pretty Ugly Tees
“Hey, I got an idea for a shirt...“ Was the mantra
of two high school buddies while drinking a lot
of beer. Next thing you know, there was a silk-
screen press in the garage. These fellas spawned
50+ tee shirt clever concepts with no artistic
talent. The creators (Harp and Schep) required
a logo, business cards and a bunch of shirts
designed. After testing several tees, we settled on
American Apparel 2001 style for maximum qual-
ity and comfort. The concept was to keep their
look edgy and homegrown yet, keep it simple.
Featured Tees >>Gray is the Old Black
Pink, brown, orange and several others have
contended to be the "New Black." That classic black
tee has had no competition... That is until the wash-
ing machine showed up, The lettering for black and
the flourish framing had a faux weathering effect
for that over washed look.
My Disco is Strong
Harp and Schep put their favorite descriptor of the
club casualty to use. Bright colors and the disco ball
and I still can’t get past the velvet rope at the night
club though...Classic disco imagery silhouetted and
collaged with a bright shot of color just in case the
black light is on.

Artwork and type created by hand then cleaned up
a bit to give this shirt a more illustrative feel. Pray
your BFF never sees the back of this one.

business cards which could serve as invites as well.

website address, logo, and map to the church. The
cards final output is 3.5" x 4" with a fold; 4 color

Client:Exclusive Event
A group of ladies representing their businesses (aesthetics I design, Mary Kay, Cookie Lee Jewelry, Pam-
pered Chef, Xocai and more) got together to have an Exclusive Event to honor their clients offering lots
of freebies and deep discounts. They requested a logo, signage, name tags, and mailer/invites. The theme
was 40's working mom and lots of polka dots. They were working on a tight budget so all pieces were
kept black and white and pieced together by hand using existing materials.

Over the past fe years Sunbust has put together several concert and dance events. Their requirements have always been bright, colorful, old school, and unlike any other flyer in the record stores. Whether using exist-
ing performing artist’s photography, stock somputer 3d images or generating images from scratch, Sunburst’s work has always stood out from the crowd. (Photagraphy of Heavy Grinder provided by AO! Records. 3d
imagery for Phase Matrix selected from Fotolia.)
