AII Control Engineering and Industrial Information Technology

(Courses in French)

Head of Program: Ass. Prof. Mohamed Yagoubi - [email protected] In this option, students learn the skills needed to develop and monitor automated

systems. These skills include modeling and simulation to understand how the systems work; instrumentation and industrial information technology to collect, process and transmit information in real time; finally control engineering to design the systems. AII engineers have a global vision of systems and play a key role in all phases of project management, including design, development, implementation, installation and maintenance. Their work also involves taking into account all factors, including human factors.

Career opportunities: Thanks to technological progress (increasingly powerful digital control systems), and organizational improvements (project structure) there is a growing industry demand for AII engineers. Since this option was created in 1995, graduates have found two major types of job opportunities. Half the graduates have found jobs with large corporations (PSA, Matra, Alstom, Dassault, CNES, Renault, etc.) and sometimes with innovative SMEs. One third of the graduates have joined IT engineering and consulting firms (BII, IPSIS, Auxilio, Altran, etc.). Others have been hired by information and communication technologies firms.

Jobs for Tomorrow and the Future: Traditional jobs include Technical sales engineer, Control engineer, Modeling engineer, Test and validation engineer, and Development engineer.

After a few years, most engineers move into:

Project leadership positions,

Specific expertise (research engineer, then senior engineer, R&D manager),

Customer support (marketing, training, sales / pre-sales).

GE Environmental Engineering

(Courses in French)

Head of Program: Ass. Prof. Aurélie JOUBERT – [email protected] In this option, students learn to be engineers in a dynamic sector: the treatment of

nuisances and pollution (water, air, waste, noise) and environmental management (eco-assessment, eco-design). The GE option looks both at process engineering, involving the processes themselves, which help limit emissions by industry, and treatment processes, once pollution has occurred. It also involves environmental management, integrated systems (quality, safety, environment), sustainable development policies, environmental assessments and impact reports, as well as regulatory watch.

Career opportunities: In a sector where national spending is growing by nearly 5% per year, the number of jobs is increasing steadily. There are numerous employment opportunities with organizations involved in environmental management: Eco-industries, which manufacture and manage waste recycling and treatment facilities; Businesses, which due to their size and their impact on the environment, have dedicated departments (often in conjunction with health and safety), in particular Classified Facilities for Environment Protection; Public or private organizations and laboratories, doing research and development in these fields; engineering, auditing or consulting firms, including public agencies such as the Agence de l’Eau, Ademe, BRGM, etc.; Governments, local or central governments (cities, counties, DRIRE, etc.) ; Consulting firms that provide environmental engineering and design services.

Jobs for Tomorrow and the Future: In light of changes in environment-related jobs, the Environmental Engineering option trains engineers to be able to:

Design, model, optimize and implement effluent treatment processes (water, waste, air) and make sustainable use of resources (clean processes);

Develop and implement environmental and sustainable development policies in businesses (ISO 14000, Integrated Management, Eco-Design, Life Cycle Analysis);

Integrate economic, technical and regulatory requirements into solutions for environmental problems (classified facilities, energy efficiency management);

GIPAD Computer Science for Decision Support

(Courses in French)

Head of Program: Ass. Prof. Xavier Lorca– Xavier.Lorca @mines-nantes.fr Decision making processes in business are becoming increasingly complex. There is so much data involved and the human and financial issues are so important that information technology has become a strategic tool. Decision-making systems that process and utilize data are already common in business. Today there are powerful new analytical and optimization methods. The GIPAD option trains engineers who can design, implement and integrate IT solutions for each phase of the decision making process, from data collection to the production and analysis of decisions. Career opportunities: Decision-making is crucial in science, industry and the service sector, with the greatest demand coming from finance, telecommunications, logistics, production, health care, energy and electronics. Information systems development and integration can be done in-house, in businesses that need a dedicated department or if they handle sensitive information, or can be outsourced. GIPAD engineers can join:

IT R&D for major accounts

General or specialized IT consulting firms

Software publishers Jobs for Tomorrow and the Future: Decision-making jobs involve two main activities, the functional analysis of a problem and developing and implementing the IT solution. These activities are generally performed simultaneously, in the context of a team project designed to solve a problem. Generally, GIPAD engineers start out as design and development engineers, and then quickly move into leadership positions such as IT project or product managers, or technical expert jobs such as consultants or research engineers. Decision-making has a wide range of applications, so engineers can focus on a specific area (finance, logistics) where their skills will be highly appreciated, or a technical specialty (optimization, visualization, decision-making).

GOPL Operations Management in Production and Logistics

(Courses in French)

Head of Program: Ass. Prof. Odile Morineau – [email protected] This option has existed since the School was founded, and was originally focused on the optimization of production systems. The curriculum has evolved and now covers the entire logistics chain, including sourcing, production and distribution. In all cases, the goal is to optimize complex flows of materials and information to achieve maximum quality of service at minimum cost and lead times. But certain costs related to human and environmental issues are difficult to measure, and not all solutions can be applied on the ground. Hence the difficulties of this field, which is based on mathematical models but must also take into account the human factor. Career opportunities GOPL engineers can find employment as: Production team manager, logistics engineer, in charge of quality and time elements. Sourcing or distribution manager, in charge of managing relations with suppliers and/or customers, to ensure efficient logistics flows based on a variety of parameters (inventory, transportation, price fluctuations, time elements). Information systems consultant, providing ERP software integration services for businesses. There are numerous job opportunities, with services now being one of the primary fields. GOPL graduates work for large corporations, for logistics service providers, and in consulting. Accenture is one of the top employers.

Jobs for Tomorrow and the Future: Logistics engineers acquire more and more responsibilities during their careers. After starting as production shop managers, they move on to manage the entire production or supply chain process. Engineers starting out in production and logistics discover the ins and outs of a business. This is an excellent way to move up to strategic management positions.

NTSE Nuclear Engineering: Technologies, Safety and Environment

(Courses in French)

Head of Program: Ass. Prof. Christoph Hartnack – [email protected]

The principal mission of the NTSE option naturally consists of training engineers to work in the major corporations and institutions in the nuclear sector. France, where electricity is largely nuclear in origin, is present in all the phases of the cycle and has a full range of facilities presenting various risks. The safety systems at these facilities must be designed according to the nature and magnitude of the hazards. But the option is not limited to the field of power production. It also covers other nuclear applications, including industrial, geological and medical applications. QSF Quality and Reliability Engineering

(Courses in French)

Head of Program: Ass. Prof. David Lemoine – [email protected] The quality of a product or service is measured by its ability to satisfy a stated need. To achieve quality, businesses have to make sure that the solutions provided are appropriate and that the entire organization is working to improve quality. While quality used to simply consist of a final verification that a product met specifications, it is now a cross-functional issue involving all partners through to the end user. Since 1995, the QSF option has been training engineers capable of assisting businesses and consulting firms implement and improve quality systems, This includes designing management systems in an integrated context involving all types of risks (occupational, industrial, economic and environmental), setting up tools and methods for defining and designing products and quality assurance, and ensuring customer satisfaction. Career opportunities This program is more methods- than technology- oriented, and seeks to respond both to the traditional concerns of industrial firms and the new aspirations of consulting firms. QSF engineers do not focus on one specific area of activity. Their skills are appreciated in a number of industries: Automotive (PSA, Renault, Valéo…) , Aviation (Airbus, Safran Group…), Banking and Insurance (BNP Paribas, MAAF Assurances…), Transportation (SNCF, GEFCO…), Telecommunications (France Telecom…), Food Processing (Danone Group…) ...and of course in consulting and service firms. QSF engineers will be in charge of: Organizing and managing the quality of products or production processes (management systems, standards, economic costs, customer satisfaction, etc.) - Quality control using statistical tools - Quality optimization, during the design or improvement phases - Assessing and improving the reliability of products or production processes - Defining and implementing a maintenance policy - Ensuring the safety of products or production processe. Jobs for Tomorrow and the Future: Though most young QSF engineers start out as Product or Systems Quality engineers in SME’s or major corporations, a number get jobs as consultants in Operational Safety (engineering experts who often work with R&D departments) or in Supply Chain Optimization. QSF engineers are generally quickly promoted to senior positions such as: Environmental safety and quality manager - Quality Manager for products, suppliers, etc. - Engineering and quality tools expert working directly with project teams - Consultant - Internal or external auditor in charge of measuring discrepancies between practices and guidelines, and accrediting the quality management system
