Need to upgrade postal departmentThe postal department urgently requires some drastic make-

over. While certain changes have been introduced and facilitieshave been upgraded, yet a lot more needs to be done.

India’s postal network is one of the largest in the world. Thehistory of modern postal system in India can be traced back to1937, when postal services were thrown open to public with themain aim of binding the country and its people together. Sincethen, the nation has come a long way with new technologies, in-frastructures and innovations introduced in many sectors of theeconomy. But unfortunately, the postal department failed to movewith the same pace as the other departments, like telecommuni-cations for instance.

Government for quite some time had been acting with apathyand complacency towards this sector. With private agencies mak-ing inroads and competition becoming stiff, this sector lagged evenfurther behind. Lack of facilities, poor working conditions andinadequate staff, made matters still worse. Unlike other sectors, the postal staff till date is not only poorly equipped to meet theever- increasing demand, but is also poorly paid.

Most of the postmen, for instance, are surviving in poor clum-sy tenements. In the absence of adequate travel grants, whichhas not been revised for years, they have to trudge long distancewith load- laden bags, to deliver letters.

While in every budget, the government promptly hikes the pric-es of postal stationeries, very little attention is directed towardsincreasing either the quality of the postal services or improvingthe service conditions of the postal employees. Even the postalnetwork, which needs to be widened further to cater to the ever-increasing demand, does not get adequate attention. For instance, especially in Navi Mumbai, there are inadequate post boxes andpeople have to cover a long distance to find one.

It is a general principle that whenever a system gets over-loaded due to escalation in demand, it becomes inadequate inquality as well as in quantity of service. The existing system theneither needs to be expanded or efficiency has to be increased byintroducing new and modern technologies. This phenomenon holdsgood even for the postal network of India. To be able to makethis sector compete with the private agencies, which are increas-ingly becoming popular due to their prompt deliveries and cordialservices, it is essential to introduce new technologies, innova-tions and modern facilities in this vital network.

Learn to say No-EmotionalQuotient II

By Salma Prabhu

I hope you allreaders were able torelate in many waysto the last columnwhere we began ad-dressing with manytips on how to build agreat Emotional Quo-tient. I m sure you areusing some of the tipsand seeing the changecoming in already.

Today’s topic maysound very easy , butit is not so as manyof us are not able tosay “NO” at the righttime to the right peo-ple.

Let me make thismore simpler with anexample.

Asma is a youngteenager who oftenfeels that she is moretired and exhaustedas she not only has todo her work and as-signments, but alsodoes for her friends towhom she is not ableto say no. Even if sheis totally fighting fortime, she takes onmore than she canchew, because she isafraid of losing herfriends. Her familymembers keep tellingher that she is beingexploited, but Asmagives a rationale toall the behaviour ofher friends as well asherself.

She is in fact suf-fering from low selfesteem and feels thatby doing things forothers even when sheis not able to cope upis good for her stay-ing in the peer group. She is also a perfec-tionist and thereforeher work is very me-ticulous and herfriends give her a lot

of compliments for herwork and help she ex-tends. When she hearsgood words about her-self from others shefeels very good.

Asma’s father is avery strict person whois most of the time atwork. But she likeshim a lot and she alsowants to be in his goodbooks. She wants herfather to be proud ofher. Her father is fondof her daughter but hedoes not have the skillof a parent who en-courages the child withpositive words and kindfeedback at the appro-priate time. This needfor assurance that sheis good and capable cre-ates a vaccum in herwhich she is trying tofulfill by pleasing oth-ers.

It is very importantfor parents to give ap-propriate encourage-ment to the childrenwhich raises their selfesteem and teach themto value themselvesand not depend on oth-ers to give apprecia-tion. If one appreciatesself, automatically ap-preciation will comefrom others. Even if itdoes not, it is not theend of the world.

So learning to sayNO at the right time tothe right people is oneof the factor for a per-son to develop a highemotional quotient. Aperson with appropri-ate emotional quotientknows that when onecan take tasks whichgive a lot of joy and per-sonal satisfaction andwhen one is being ex-ploited.

Saying NO to par-ents and near and dearones and going out anddoing social work isdefinitely not having agood emotional quo-tient. Trying to makeeveryone happy andending up in stress isnot the way. Finding agood balance in whatyou want to do, howmuch you want to doand for whom you

want to do is the key. If you are a YES

PERSON and nothappy and feel ex-ploited then take thefollowing steps.1. Sit down calmly

and list down allthe activities youare doing in onecolumn

2. Next columnwrite the time be-ing taken

3. Next put a tickmark on which ismaking you ener-getic and happyand what is ex-hausting you andmaking you anx-ious and unhappy.

4. Across all the oneswhich are makingyou unhappywrite a big NO

5. Keep looking atthe NO and polite-ly refuse nexttime

6. At the same timeparallel do thethings that giveyou joy.

7. Give yourself pos-itive pat on theshoulder and tellyourself how awe-some you are.

8. If the people whomyou have politelyrefused have be-come upset thenthey are not worthbeing yourfriends.

9. Mix with peoplewho value you forwhat you are andnot because you dothings for them.

10.Be Happy at thenew you and thenew self-esteem. If your more hap-

py, more relaxed, more in love withyourself, Congratula-tions you are on thepath to develop ahealthy emotionalquotient.Salma Prabhu ClinicalPsychologist, Career

Need to find amicable solution

for KashmirThe history of violence and unrest in the Kash-

mir valley is many decades old. Each passing daywe hear of violence and killing of people with nosight to security of lives. Till date, no solution and agreement seem to bein proximity that is acceptable to India, Pakistan and Kashmiri sepa-ratists. India and Pakistan have already fought more than three warsover Kashmir.

Hopes of betterment were raised when the PDP-BJP governmentcame to power in Jammu and Kashmir. However, the government of theday has failed completely and both parties are pinning blame on eachother for the present sorry affairs. The army and police force may bedoing their best to curb the violence but their act comes under the pullsand pressures of politicians. Such intervention can demoralise and im-peril Kashmir’s police force.
