Infrared and near infrared l ight therapy is a compa- rat ively new type of therapy which is used to t reat pat ients wi th acute or chronic pain. Wavelengthsof l ight of a certain speci f ic length is focused on

the si tes of the body that have the in jur ies or pain, in th is therapy.

The l ight for these therapeutic purposes is in the red or near infrared (NIR) spectrum (600nm – 1000nm). We can only see l ight up to 700 nm so infrared or

near infrared l ight is invis ib le to us. L ight hasa photochemical effect comparable to photosynthesis

in plants. For l ight therapy to work, enough l ight has to penetrate below the surface of the skin and be absorbed by cel ls to exert a suf f ic ient chemical change. Dur ing the past 50 years there have been

A study was conducted to invest igate the safety and ef f ic iency of red- l ight therapy for large area

and ful l body appl icat ion, for improving skin feel ing and appearance.

Materials and methods:A total of 136 volunteers part ic ipated in th is

prospect ive, randomized, and control led study. Of these volunteers, 113 subjects were t reated twice

a week with ei ther 611–650 or 570–850 nm red l ight (normal ized to ~9 J/cm2 in the range of

611–650 nm). I r radiances and treatment durat ions var ied in al l t reatment groups. The data col lected at basel ine and af ter 30 sessions included bl inded

evaluat ions of c l in ical photography, ul t rasonographic col lagen densi ty measurements,

computer ized digi ta l prof i lometry, and an assessment of pat ient sat isfact ion.

Results:The treated subjects exper ienced signi f icant ly

improved skin complexion and skin feel ing, prof i lometr ic evaluat ion of skin roughness, and

ul t rasonographical measurement of col lagen densi ty. The bl inded cl in ical evaluat ion of

photographs conf i rmed signi f icant improvement in the intervent ion groups.

Conclusions:The red- l ight therapy bulb t reatment demonstrated

ef f icacy and safety for skin rejuvenat ionand intradermal col lagen increase.
