Proven Solutions for Proactive Service Assurance

Residential users are increasingly adopting converged telecom services such as IP based voice & video, high-speed internet, and wireless services from a single provider. In this scenario, traditional communications service provider (CSP) and cable multiple services operators (MSOs) must strive harder to meet the quality experience expectations of their customers. Not meeting these expectations can quickly lead to lower customer satisfaction and higher churn. Carrier grade service assurance capabilities that proactively tackle capacity planning, engineering, reporting, and end-to-end service performance management can enormously help service providers stay one step ahead of these issues.

Service Providers need scalable, real-time proactive service assurance capabilities to be successful with their residential triple play go-to-market strategies. This is the only sure way to handle the forecasted subscriber growth and meet the desired service performance expectations. InfoVista’s market leading solutions offer the management data and insights to develop the best quality of service experience for customers interested in buying triple / multi play services.

Main Service Performance Assurance Challenges Faced by Service Providers

As service providers continue to undertake network and operations support systems (OSS) transformation efforts to enable complex triple / multi play services, they have added a wide range of infrastructure equipment, systems, software applications and complexity. These transformation efforts coupled with rapid subscriber growth and increasingly complex service portfolio has led to an explosion in data traffic demand and a new set of service performance assurance challenges:

Significantly larger number of devices and applications to be managedff

Strain on bandwidth utilization and management/maintenance of the core, access and ffdistribution networks

Optimization of evolving High Speed Data (DSL or Cable Modem), VoIP, Video (IPTV or ffSwitched Digital Video) and integrated wireless network services

Superior service delivery and in-depth SLA management for internal or 3rd party ffprovided managed or hosted applications

Enhanced quality of service (QoS) management and Quality of Experience (QoE) ffmonitoring for all customer segments

Proactive Service Assurance is a critical component in the creation of a service-centric operational support system (OSS) environment. These solutions play a crucial role in helping CSPs and MSOs perform some of the essential functions needed for management of complex end-user services:

Proactive monitoring and troubleshooting of network and IT issues before they ffimpact services

Accelerated problem resolution based on a combination of historical and real-time ffdata

Capacity planning and reporting to help make intelligent, cost effective technological ffand financial decisions

Enhanced Service Level Agreements (SLA) and customer reporting that provide in-ffdepth visibility into service quality and performance metrics.

Delivering the highest quality of service and experience is essential if service providers are to attract and retain customers. In the residential market, poor quality delivery of any one service can mean a lost customer for the entire triple-play bundle. Superior performance of triple / multi-play services is highly dependent on a well engineered and maintained network and OSS infrastructure. An issue with the customer’s broadband link, whether bandwidth degradation or connection failure, can immediately lead to customer experience impacting problems for all services riding over that connection. The same is true for the core and aggregation networks that typically rely upon IP MPLS and Carrier Ethernet technologies. Poor capacity planning and lack of end-to-end quality monitoring/reporting of the core and aggregation networks can quickly lead to service impacting issues.

Given the high expectations on service level delivery – operations and engineering teams need all the tools at their disposal to ensure the best possible quality of experience. InfoVista’s flagship performance management solution, VistaInsight® for Networks, and other complementary solutions such as VistaInsight for Servers, and VoIP quality measurement active / passive probes, offer the leading edge performance management capability to meet the demands of next generation services.

What are the critical considerations for assuring triple / multi play services?

Are there particular applications or users that are consuming available bandwidth?

Is there a performance issue with the end user application or service?

Is there a performance issue with any of the infrastructure

supporting the service?

VistaInsight for Networks (VIN)ff enables Cable MSOs to automatically collect, analyze and present performance data for all of the heterogeneous devices, technologies and elements on their network on both an individual and a service-centric basis.

VistaInsight for Servers (VIS)ff allows Cable MSOs to automatically discover, collect and store performance information from the full range of application and user / service authentication servers in their environment using an agent-agnostic approach.

InfoVista Solutions for Triple / Multi Play Services Offer…

End-to-end performance management with a service-centric view of the core and ffaccess infrastructure

Detailed real-time reports on crucial performance metrics and KPIs/KQIs for the ffcore network (IP MPLS, Carrier Ethernet) and triple play applications such as VoIP servers hosted in the service provider data centers

True evolution from “reactive” to “proactive” service monitoring and managementff

Enhanced OSS integration and automation to streamline core NGN networksff

Intuitive end-user (engineering, planning, operations staff) and customer ffreporting dashboards

Our solutions enable triple play service providers to automatically collect, analyze and present key performance data for all of their heterogeneous devices, technologies and elements of their networks on both an individual and service-centric basis. Using a top-down proactive service assurance approach, service providers are notified when performance thresholds are exceeded (e.g. MOS in the case of VoIP; jitter, packet loss or delay for other time sensitive services; port capacity on DSL BRAS devices; CMTS performance KPIs for cable modem) or when abnormal behavior occurs, enabling operations staff to drill down into specific details to take corrective actions before the end users are affected.

A Major Broadband Service Provider becomes Proactive with Service Assurance

A U.K. based residential and business DSL provider needed to improve service assurance capabilities by having the best of breed capacity planning, troubleshooting and performance reporting platform. The client wanted to monitor and report on its whole IP and DSL network, focusing also on a large number of BRAS devices that had hundreds of thousands of ATM Virtual Circuits and Paths (VPs/VCs) and a complex mix of Ethernet based customer and service VLANs. The challenge was that the MIBs on these machines were not properly defined, and all the sub-circuits were mixed, thus the element discovery process was putting an unnecessary load on the BRAS trying to sift through all the information

InfoVista implemented the solution using its standard products to ffprovide performance data on the service provider’s IP and DSL networks, as well as SMTP and DNS servers. Our flagship product - VistaInsight for Networks provided bespoke reporting for Juniper BRAS devices, Cisco multiplexers, Juniper Netscreen firewalls among others. NetFlow was also implemented in this project in order to monitor the flow between the service provider and its peers at Internet exchanges.

The successful implementation of the project improved the service ffprovider’s ability to monitor and report - from a single performance assurance platform - all the key network performance indicators on routers, switches, BRAS, multiplexers etc. and put focus on virtual paths and service VLANs originating from the DSLAMs.
