During my tenure as social chairman of our fraternity these are a few of the unique thing I have encountered. Not to mention the riders I have encountered. Explain rider. 6 pack of white tube socks, 2 bottles of $150 Champaign, 4 mango smoothies, chop sticks, 25 red starburst and my favorite, 6 packages of salted cashews. Thesis: Generally unknown to guests and people alike, a great deal of time, money, and effort goes into organizing the various types of fraternity parties with the University. II. Types of fraternity parties Intro: As previously mentioned there are different types of fraternity social events. These include swaps, date parties/formals, and house parties. With each type of party comes its own purpose for having it. A. Swaps o 1. Private event with one specific fraternity and sorority o 2. Over the type theme o 3. Happen early in the year to meet new people (especially freshman) o 4. 5-6 swaps a year o different venues and theme – (Biker Bar, roaring 20’s, redneck wedding, other clichés) B. Date Party/Formal o 1. Private event where the entire fraternity can ask one date. o 2. 2-3 a year o 3. These events are more formal in dress and general atmosphere

II. Types of fraternity partiesIntro: As previously mentioned there are different types of fraternity social events. These include swaps, date parties/formals, and house parties. III. Budgeting A. With the different types of parties and reasons for parties, budgeting is the most important aspect to consider while party planning B. Although it is extremely tempting to not use your funds for the entire year and plan the worlds most epic party. C. Once alumni give you the budget for the year, begin subtracting your estimates for all the party requirements (transportation, security, talent.)Decision to hire cheap entertainment so next time roll over saved money bigger ent. name How many smoke machines/lasers do I need vs. want Best way one below, one middle, one higher

IV. Party Requirements A. Now that we know about the different parties, lets talk about each unique requirements. 1. SwapSmall busses, venue, entertainment (DJ), security Get in touch with other social chairs to pick date, theme, and venue. Once venue is selected, talk with treasurer to get checks to hold spot.2. Date Party/Formal A. Date party: Nice coach busses, nicer venue, jam band, security, finger foodsPicking a calendar date is crucial. Black Friday shoppers running in, hectic, conflicting same dates, if youve done your job right people give you your date first.B. New Orleans Formal: Coach busses, hotel rooms for bus drivers, bus parking spots, 100 hotel rooms, venue, entertainment, security, bar tenders. Venue is hardest thing to get a hold of. Pick dates early, only so many charter busses than can go. 5 fraternities same formal date, call busses in late October. 3. House Party:Expensive entertainment, entertainers rider, entertainer hotel room, production/sound, someone to run production, wristbands, security, booking agent feeFriday night parties before big football games fall semester. Best entertainment people will usually pick over others.Spring semester big themed party. Go all out. 4 tiki huts, 20 pick up truck loads of sand, shaking out the piggy bank for lose change youve put back the entire semester. Production to bring more lights than time square and louder enough to blow the toupes off the security guards. * no matter which of the types of party, everything must be registered 2 weeks in advance through the dean of students office. Security contract and guest list submitted online as well as contact info for president, social chair, and the two sober guests. Hey, gotta keep them happy.

V. Conclusion A. So there you have it folks, a full calendar year of organized social functions. As fun as was running around Oxford trying to find a certain flavor of Doritos and $300 of liquor one hour before the show, I am excited for my time as social chair to come to an end so I can be another one of the 200 backseat drivers to tell the social chair their opinion on something.
