The FMA Informative was fortunate to meet Punong Tagapagturo Ronaldo “Bax” Baxafra and his wife Senior Dayang Jessielyn N. Baxafra. Most have heard of them with their Organization Baxafra Armor. (Informative Issue No #42 - 3rd Baxafra Armor Invitational) - Click Here. However in this issue the FMA Informative brings you a little about the style in which they teach other than for tournament preparation, which is called Galaw Tanggulan; the movement of defense, Galaw (movement) and Tanggulan (defense).

Punong Tagapagturo Ronaldo “Bax” Baxafra Arnis has influenced Punong Tagapagturo Baxafra throughout his life, and as time moved on has become a prominent promoter of Sports Arnis, (but that is a story for another tine). With the combination of Arnis Doce Generales and Modern Arnis, Punong Tagapagturo Baxafra style of Galaw Tanggulan has bladed, stick and empty hand concepts. It has its traditional side with Arnis Doce Generales and with Modern Arnis its modern side. Galaw Tanggulan is a continuous improving art; Punong Tagapagturo Baxafra researches other systems for practical applications not just for the style but for the tact ability and techniques which will enhance Galaw Tanggulan.

The Beginning of Galaw Tanggulan

Commencing his training in the martial arts at the age of 8 years old with his parents prompting, Punong Tagapagturo Baxafra, he was instructed by Grandmaster Villanueva, his mentor. When he was going to High School the high school commenced a Modern Arnis class under Grandmaster Dagooc, which at that time Punong Tagapagturo Baxafra also joined in the training, after High School Ronald went back to continue his training under Grandmaster Villan-ueva, to study the traditional art of Doce Generales. Arnis has influenced Punong Tagapagturo Baxafra throughout his life, and as time moved on has become a prominent promoter of Sports Arnis, (but that is a story for another tine). With life events always in the mix, his parents first his father at a young age and unfor-tunately his mother, Bax found himself without financial means to continue his education, and decided to do what he knew best which was Arnis. With the support of both Grandmaster Villanueva and Grandmaster Dagooc (which were friends), Bax was guided him and also they employed him to teach Arnis to help him with his financials to make a living. Unfor-

tunately Bax has a big heart and many times he teaches for chari-ties for free so much is his love of the art. Also as a part time cook in a restaurant, Bax met his future wife Jessielyn “Jemn” Baxafra, who as time passed grew to know Bax’s passion and dedication to martial arts and convinced him to continue his journey in instruct-ing and promoting the martial arts. Jemn also commenced her study of the martial arts and got very proficient using the balisong (but-terfly knife). With the combination of Arnis Doce Generales and Mod-ern Arnis, Punong Tagapagturo Baxafra style of Galaw Tanggulan has bladed, stick and empty hand concepts. It has its traditional side and with the Modern Arnis side its modern side which he realized and understood has benefits of an educational value, which were compiled and arranged by the late Professor Remy Presas as a teach-er. In the traditional side Bax found that there is no ranking and when a student was ready the teacher would come up and tell the student that they were ready to teach. But in today’s society, rank-ing seems important to succeed in

business. So Bax on his own created his system. With the help of the late Grandmaster Villanueva and Grandmaster Dagooc and also the guidance of Punong Lakan Garitony ‘Pet’ Nicolas, which en-lightened Bax on the proper way to manage his business, he and his wife Jemn has continuously pros-pered in their dream of promulgat-ing the Filipino martial arts. Galaw Tanggulan is the Movement of Defense, Galaw (movement) and Tanggulan (de-fense). The art has the concept of the traditional and the modern arts and the practicality and concepts for Sport Arnis. Punong Tagapagturo Bax-afra when starting students teaches either Modern Arnis or Doce Generales to them once the student becomes dedicated and loyal that is when Punong Tagapagturo Bax-afra will introduce them to Galaw Tanggulan. Galaw Tanggulan is a continuous improving art; Punong Tagapagturo Baxafra researches other systems for practical appli-cations not just for the style but for the tact ability and techniques which will enhance Galaw Tang-gulan.
