INFORMATIVE INTERVIEW WITH DONNA KNAUB

On June 26, 2015 I had the pleasure of performing an informational interview with a coworker, Donna Knaub. Her title at WellSpan Health Organization is a Coder/Billing Specialist. She has worked in this position for 15 months at the WellSpan Lung Sleep & Critical Care Medical Group York location. She was very informative in our meeting and I did learn a lot. I knew that keeping up to date with knowledge was important, but didn’t realize that some of the job titles can be so different even though the certification requirements are the same.

I have listed below the questions and answers I reviewed with Mrs. Knaub for your review.

How did you get into this field? o Mrs. Knaub had worked for WellSpan in the past and since she was not happy with the

employer she was working with decided to move back with WellSpan and has been in this position for 15 months.

What do you like/dislike about this position? o Mrs. Knaub like the people, however dislikes the issues she deals with especially with

the doctors. What do you feel are the career path options?

o She would like to just do coding instead of billing specialist and coding. She doesn’t want to handle billing questions and would like to work more with inpatient setting.

How do you stay up to date with the knowledge required? o She attends AAPC functions and gets her continuing education credits though those

functions as well as some of the education opportunities held through our company here at WellSpan Health Organization.

What is important to managers to have in my resume?o Coding experience is very important, as well as familiarity with different insurances, and

the revenue billing cycle. What other job titles should I look into if few jobs are available for my primary choice?

o Physician billing representative is what Mrs. Knaub started out with and what she suggested for me to begin with.

How can I stand out from other job seekers for this position?o Knowledge and training in ICD-10 with certification is going to be a huge asset when

looking for positions in coding since the change will be this year. What advice would you give me in reference to this field?

o “Just keep trying.” Mrs. Knaub explained that coding is very difficult and there is high demand for the position, so just keep trying and maintain education as much as possible.

Do you think my resume is appropriate for this position to help me get hired?o Mrs. Knaub stated that my resume was very appropriate and as soon as I get my

certification that should complete everything that would be preferred for the position.

Mrs. Knaub’s contact information is through email at (deleted for privacy) or through her work phone at (deleted for privacy) between the hours of 8:00am until 3:30pm Monday through Friday. She is aware that she may be contacted and looks forward to speaking with you in regards to our interview. I did send a thank you letter, as she was gracious enough to meet with me and wonderful to work with.
