Bad Sinkhole Science Exposed! The Catastrophic Cost of False Positives

SDII Global Corporation invites you to a truly unique experience! Many in the sinkhole-investigation industry lack understanding of how sinkholes form, what really constitutes a sinkhole and sinkhole activity, and what does not. One thing has become clear to us as we perform peer reviews for our clients. That is, many subsidence reports show a general lack of understanding of karst science in Florida resulting in large numbers of “false positive” sinkhole determinations. False positive sinkhole findings result in unnecessary expense. In other words, the insurance industry is paying on many sinkhole claims where sinkhole activity is not present.

It’s time for you to EXPERIENCE the real science behind sinkholes! We will walk you down into the subsurface, into a limestone quarry, where the geology of Florida can be seen up close and personal. You will see limestone, clay, sinkholes, pinnacles, epikarst, and other karst features that are commonly discussed in the subsidence reports your vendor provides to you. You will touch, photograph, and understand these features while discussing them with our experts (Dr. Tom Scott, Dr. Tom Dobecki, and Dr. Sam Upchurch).

In addition to hands-on experience, we are bringing in one of the nation’s foremost experts on karst science, Dr. John Mylroie. He will offer independent commentary and critique as part of our informative and exciting panel discussion.

Join us and challenge our experts with your questions. Listen to the experts as they discuss the significance of the karst features we observe, so that you can apply this newfound understanding to your sinkhole claims. Experience the realities of Florida sinkholes by seeing them first hand, and take advantage of a personal conversation with our group of highly published experts on an all-day exploration of Florida sinkholes. It will begin at 7:30 a.m. with a narrated field trip, by air-conditioned bus, to a quarry near Brooksville, Florida. We will provide a guidebook and a sack for fossil collecting. Afterwards we will return to SDII Global Headquarters for a complimentary luncheon and informal forum with Dr. Mylroie and SDII’s senior experts.

INSTRUCTORSDr. Sam Upchurch, P.G.

Dr. Upchurch has over 40 years of experience in karst geology, engineering and forensic geology, geochemistry and contamination, geophysics, and sedimentology. He is the former Chairman of the Geology Department at the University of South Florida. Dr. Upchurch has been admitted as an expert in federal, state, and local courts. He’s conducted over 1,000 projects in karst geology and is the author of over 200 published reports, journal articles, and chapters in books. Dr. Upchurch is a Senior Fellow with the Geological Society of America and a former member and Chairman of the Florida Board of Professional Geologists.

Dr. Thomas Scott, P.G.Dr. Scott was with the Florida Geological Survey for over 35 years and served as the Assistant State Geologist for Geological Investigations for more than 24 years before bringing his karst and forensic geology experience to SDII. He is considered Florida’s foremost expert on Florida geology. Dr. Scott is the senior author of the Geologic Map of Florida and The Springs of Florida and a co-author on the Roadside Geology of Florida. He is the author of over 150 published reports, journal articles, and chapters in books. Dr. Scott is a former member and Chairman of the Florida Board of Professional Geologists.

Dr. Thomas Dobecki, P.G.Dr. Dobecki has over 35 years of experience in geophysics, non-destructive testing, and geology to environmental, engineering, archaeological, and groundwater projects. He is a former professor of Geophysics at the Colorado School of Mines and is the Past President, Near-surface geophysics section of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. Dr. Dobecki served as President of the Near Surface Geophysics Section of the International Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) and is an active member of the Engineering and Environmental Geophysics Society (EEGS). He is a published authority on the application of geophysics to sinkhole investigations, archaeological surveys, and engineering site evaluations. His list of experience includes over 2,000 residential property evaluations, investigations at the Great Pyramids and Sphinx of Egypt, numerous fossil and nuclear power plant sites, and dam and levee safety analyses.

SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKERDr. John Mylroie

Dr. John Mylroie is a Professor and former Head of the Department of Geosciences at Mississippi State University. He has studied karst terrains across the world, from Norway to the South Pacific, and few scientists have done more to advocate sound karst science in the United States. Mylroie received the Science Award from the National Speleological Society in 2000 for his contributions to island and coastal karst, and the Society’s highest award, Honorary Membership, for his lifetime contributions to cave and karst science in 2008. He was the Founding President of the Karst Waters Institute, an organization dedicated to advancing karst research and education.
