Be prepared for fire alarms. Whileyouarehere,youmayhearanalarmforafireordisasterdrill.Theseareonlydrillsandwedothemtokeepyousafe.Anurseorothermemberofyourteamwillletyouknowifyouneedtodoany-thingduringthedrill.

WhileYouAreHereYou’ve got mail. Inmostcases,mailandflowerscancometoyourroombuttherearecertainareas,conditionsandunitswhichdonotallowflowers.Somehealthissuesmayalsonotallowfreshflowers,freshfruitorotheritemstobedeliveredtoyourroom.Ifyouareunderage9,tellallyourfriendstosendmylarballoonsinsteadoflatexballoonsbecausetheyaremuchsafer.

Don’t take medicine unless your doctor or nurse tells you to.Whileyouarehere,youmaynothavetotakethemedicinesyounormallytakeathome.Remember,anythingyourdoctorwantsyoutotake,hewillsendbythenurse.

Let’s eat.Everyday,unlessyouareonaspecialdiet,youwillreceiveafoodtraywithamenuforthenextdayattached.Pickwhatyouwanttoeatandgivethemenubacktothepersonwhopicksupyourtray.Ifyoudonotgetamenu,askyournurseforone.

Goff’sGalley,locatedinthe2WestPediatricunit,isavailableforpediatricpatientsandfamiliesandisopen24hoursaday.Arefrigerator,microwave,andicemachineareavailableaswellassnackitems.Patientsonisolationcanobtainsnacksbymak-ingarequesttotheirnurse.

Can I play now?PortableDVDplayersandportablevideogamesareallowed,butitemsthathavetobeconnectedtoahospitalTVarenotpermitted.Therearegamesystemsinthepatientroomsinthe2WestPediatricunit.Ifyouwanttobringanythingelectronictothehospital,pleasetalktoyournursefirst.

FamilyandVisitorHoursWeconsiderourselvesonebigfamily,andwhileyouarehere,you’reoneofus.AtVidantChildren’sHospital,wepracticesomethingcalledpatient-andfamily-centeredcare.Thismeanswewantyourfamilyandfriendstobeherejustasmuchasyoudo.

Yourfamilymembersarewelcome24hoursaday.VisitinghoursinthePediatricRehabilitationunitarefrom5:00pmuntil9:00pm.Thesehoursaredifferentbecausesomepatientsmayhavemorningandafternoontherapysessions.

Yourpastororyouthministercancomevisityouatanytime.Ifyoudonothaveapastor,butwouldliketotalkwithone,thehospitalhaschaplainswhowillvisityou.

SleepoversIfyouareinaprivateroom,aparentorguardianmaysleepintheroomwithyou.

SafetyandSecurityLet’sworktogethertomakesureyoustaysafewhileyouarehereatthehospi-tal.Here are a few tips:

Look for employee badges.Allofouremployeeshavetowearanidentificationbadgewhiletheyareatwork.Theirphoto,nameandjobtitlewillbelistedonthebadge.Therewillalsobeagreenandwhitesymbolofaboyandgirlonthebadgethatrepresentspeoplewhowilltakeyoufortestsandtherapy.Everyonewillintroducehimselforherselftoyou.Iftheydon’t,pleaseaskthemtheirnameandwhattheirroleisinyourcare.

Make sure everyone washes his or her hands. Thebestwaytopreventspreadinggermsistowashyourhands.Besureallyourteammembers,familymembersandvisitorswashtheirhandswhentheycomeintoyourroom.

PetTherapyWeloveanimalsatVidantChildren’sHospital.Pettherapyisusedtohelpourpatientswhiletheyarehere.Certifiedtherapydogsandotheranimalsareavailableoncertaindaystovisityouandyourfamily.Ifyouarenotcomfortablearoundanimalsorhaveanallergytopets,pleaseletyournurseknow.

Playroom–2WestWehaveaplayroomwhereyoucanplayandmeetwithotherpatients.Ifyouwouldlike,thisisagoodplacetotalktoothersaboutyourexperience.Yoursiblingsandfamilymembersareencouragedtocometotheplayroomalso.

In-HospitalSchoolIfyouaregoingtomissseveraldaysofschoolbecauseofyourtimehere,wewillbringtheschooltoyou.AteacherwilleithercometoyourroomoryoumaygototheSchoolRoomatVidantChildren’sHospital.Alltheworkyoudoherewillgobacktoyourregularschool.Thatway,youwillnotgetbehindonyourschoolworkandnotbecountedabsent.
