Definition of Market Information

Market Information is a business resource that contributes to know- how and increases the chances for the businesses to manage prevailing situations and plan for future market opportunities. As defined by FIT Uganda 2007

Price data needs to be collected at least in four levels

FIT in house models

1st Consumer Market – Retail and wholesale prices – ( AgMIS- free public good)

2rd Transaction point of commodity chain ( off lorry , on lorry, stores e.t.c) ( VARMIS)-under development

3rd Localized prices – farm gate, assembly markets( obutale) (LAMIS)

4th Production Input Costs- (FARMIS)

Page 28: Information for Food Security : ‘FIT Uganda Experience’

Localized market information Services

MIS decentralization

LAMIS – Localized Market Information System

• Personalized MIS System• Prices from other markets at no cost• Training in market intelligence

Page 29: Information for Food Security : ‘FIT Uganda Experience’

Challenges

Mis-interpretation of data High cost of collection and data

verification Information access points Standards , Commodity measures Communication costs Public Vs. Private Good definition of MIS

Page 30: Information for Food Security : ‘FIT Uganda Experience’

Future proposals Price data should be collected in the

Consumer markets ( retail and wholesale) Price data should be collected from local

market close to rural or farming communities ( farm gate price, assembly market prices)

Transaction data ; ( spot prices, on & off lorry prices, store /warehouses etc.)

Need for Standardization of data tools, at all levels with in country and regional.

Page 31: Information for Food Security : ‘FIT Uganda Experience’

Conclusions Collection of prices at the different stages of

values is critical for appropriate monitoring of price trends and understanding of market dynamics

Prices data varies , depends on collection points /stage of the commodity in the production to market chain.

Continuity in service, easy of collection, analysis, storage, interpretation and ability for retrieval.
