Background Information

The Barbican Centre’s vision is arts without boundaries and it delivers this through world-class arts and learning.

We work with outstanding artists to create an innovative international programme that crosses art forms. Last year, we collaborated with thirty-three organisations around the world to give audiences opportunities to experience outstanding work.

We celebrate the artists of today and invest in those of tomorrow. Last year, over 1,200 artists presented work, and we collaborated with over 150 arts and education partners to provide opportunities for 50,000 people to attend and participate in creative learning programmes.

We inspire more people to discover and love the arts. Last year, over 150,000 attended a free Barbican event. This year, we are offering 50,000 affordable tickets to young people.

The Barbican is part of a growing City of London cultural hub, including the Museum of London, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and manyother cultural sites, galleries and festivals.

In collaboration with the Guildhall School of Music& Drama, our creative learning programmes inspire people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities, from first experiences of the arts through to professional training. We have a particular focus on east London and work with schools and communities in some of the UK’s most deprived areas.

The Barbican’s Grade II listed, architecturally renowned centre opened in 1982. The Centre comprises the Barbican Hall, Milton Court Concert Hall, the Barbican Theatre, the Pit studio theatre, Cinema One, Two and Three, the Barbican Art Gallery, The Curve gallery, foyers and public spaces, a library, Lakeside Terrace, a glasshouse conservatory, conference facilities and three restaurants.

Residents and AssociatesThe Barbican is home to Resident Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra; Associate Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra; Associate Ensembles, The Academy of Ancient Music and Britten Sinfonia, and Associate Producer Serious.

Artistic Associates include Boy Blue Entertainment, Cheek by Jowl and Michael Clark Company. International Associates are Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam, New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig and Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Our world-class arts and learning programme is flourishing, and each year 2 million people visit the Barbican.

Funding and Fundraising at the BarbicanThe City of London Corporation is the owner, founder and principal funder of the Barbican Centre. The Barbican earns and raises approximately 50 percent of its revenue.

Total fundraising income in 2014/15 was £1.4 million (excluding ACE) from individuals, foundations, and the business community. The Barbican and Barbican Centre Trust are working with an increasing number of supporters.

The Barbican is one of Arts Council England’s National Portfolio Organisations, receiving a grant of £1.7 million over three years for work in east London. This recognises our work with local communities, arts organisations and venues.

The Barbican also has a vibrant commercial programme of business events, exhibitions, international touring exhibitions, catering and retail.

The Barbican’s Development teamThe Development department, in collaboration with the Barbican Centre Trust, leads the Centre’s fundraising activities, securing operating and capital income to sustain and develop world-class arts and learning.

The Barbican Centre Trust is a registered charity (no 294282) chaired by Emma Kane. Under the chairman’s leadership the Trustees champion fundraising for the Barbican.

The Trusts & Foundations Officer works with the Trusts & Foundations Manager to raise funds for the arts and Creative Learning programmes and to ensure that opportunities for trust and public funding are fully exploited. It is a great opportunity for someone who is highly organised, proactive and a persuasive communicator, and who wants to cement their skills in this fundraising stream.

Working in the Barbican’s Development team is exciting and wide-ranging. The Trusts & Foundations Officer works closely with Trustees and colleagues across the organisation, gaining insight into every aspect of the Barbican’s programme.
