Message from the Vice-Chancellor

Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University, Kanpur is a premiere

Institution in North India established in 1966 with more than

900 affiliated college and ten lakh enrolled students in the

current time. The University has excellent infrastructure and

provides quality education to the students in the new millennium.

The University is fast emerging as a major center for research and

technology development. We have well qualified, experienced and

dedicated faculty to supervise the researchers in their endeavour. The University is

committed towards creating a favourable environment in the campus as well as affiliated

colleges.

I am very happy to announce the commencement of the PhD program in CSJM

University in the year 2019 in various domains of higher education. This program is for a

minimum 03-year duration including course work. The aim of the program is to conduct

high quality research in the interest of the students and the broader society. The PhD

program will help to make a significant contribution to the field of knowledge in various

disciplines. It will improve the abilities to understand and solve complex research

problems for better job opportunities.

The application form is available on the University website that can be filled by

candidate as per the instructions provided. I wish all the applicants a great career ahead

Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University (formerly Kanpur

University) Kanpur has been, a premier

institution with its motto “Aroh Tamso

The University is a State University of Uttar Pradesh and it is approved

under section 12 F and 2 B of UGC Act since its inception. Since its

beginning in 1966 the University has been universal in nature and has

affiliated a large number of colleges in the districts of its jurisdiction

namely, Kanpur, Allahabad, Fatehpur, Sitapur, Hardoi, Etawah,

Aurraiya, Kannauj, Farrukhabad, Kanpur Dehat, Kaushambi, Rai

Bareli, Unnao, Amethi and Lakh impur.

Located in the biggest industrial metropolis of Uttar Pradesh, C.S.J.M.

University stands out in higher education. Its sprawling campus of 265

acres is booming with academic activities. The residential campus offers

both Postgraduate and Undergraduate programmes in vocational and

professional education which are highly job oriented and will meet the

requirements of new millennium. The departments and Institutes on

Bio Technology. health Sciences, Engineering and Technology,

pharmacy, Journalism and Mass Communication, Library and

Information Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, Education,

The C.S.J.M. University, Kanpur has a state-of-the-art Computer Centre

and Central Library. The Computer Centre is well equipped with

computing resources and caters to the academic needs of the university.

The faculty and students in the University campus have free access to

the computer centre and use internet facility available therein.

Relentless determination, planning and investment to unite traditional

library facilities with evolving electronic resources have resulted in the

excellent and widely praised Ganesh Shanker Vidyarthi Central Library

and E-learning environment at Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj

University, Kanpur. The library is well stocked with a variety of books

on management, engineering and technology, humanities and social

sciences, economics, commerce and basic sciences, Hindi and English.

A wide range of periodicals, journals and magazines are subscribed in

the library. The library has an inventory of more than 100000 books

and access licences to as many as 5000 electronic journals.

The University has become an educational centre where students of

various religious and cultural backgrounds study and work together in

a congenial atmosphere. The University is geared to provide maximum

scholastic benefit to each individual student. Chhatrapati Shahu Ji

About the Ph.D. Programme

CSJM University is offering admission to Ph.D. programme 2019 in

various disciplines as per UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for

Award of Ph.D. Degrees) Regulations 2016 and CSJMU Ph.D. ordinance.

Ph.D. programme shall be for a minimum duration of three years,

including course work and a maximum of six years. This would be called

as the Residency period of the Research Scholar. Research Scholar must

put regular attendance in the department concerned after the

completion of the course work.

No candidate would be exempted from the continuous Residency period.

Vice-Chancellor, on the recommendation of the Supervisor may grant

permission to candidate to reside outside for purpose of collection of

research material for his/her thesis or doing experimental research

work for a total period of not more than one year provided further that

such exemption shall not be granted in the first six months after course

work.

In case, a candidate fails to submit his/her thesis within Six years, from

date of his/her registration, as mentioned in ordinance, he/she shall

cease to be a bonafide student of the University and shall not be entitled

to the rights and facilities extended to a regular student and his/her

registration shall stand cancelled automatically.

The women candidates and Persons with Disability (more than 40%

disability) may be allowed a relaxation of two years in maximum

duration on his/her request and permission granted by Vice-Chancellor

before the expiry of Six Years. In addition, the women candidates may

be provided Maternity Leave/Child Care Leave once in the entire

duration of Ph.D. for up to 240 days.

Admission Process

The University shall admit Ph.D. students through an entrance test

named as "Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University Entrance Test (CSJMU-ET)” for Ph.D. admission.

Subject to the provisions contained in clause (8) of section 7 of the Uttar Pradesh State Universities Act, 1973, CSJMU-ET shall be conducted in specified subjects/disciplines by the University.

Exemptions from the Entrance Test:

The following categories of candidates shall be exempted from the Entrance Test for admission to Ph.D. programme:

a) Permanent Assistant Professors, Associate Professors and Professors having appointment on substantive posts in the teaching departments of the University or a government college / government aided college affiliated / associated to the University

who have completed their probation successfully with an experience of at least Two years of uninterrupted service.

b) International students (including NRIs) which shall be subject to

the general rules framed by the Government of India from time to time and as applicable to the University with regards to the admission, fees etc.

c) Candidates who have secured grants for research such as fellowship/scholarship/associateship etc. from UGC(NET-JRF)/ CSIR(NET-JRF)/ GATE-MHRD Scholarship/ Teacher Fellowship/ DBT/ ICMR/ICAR/DST-INSPIRE/SLET.

d) Candidates who have GATE Score of not less than 95 Percentile. e) Serving Army, Navy and Air-force Officers of at least Colonel or

equivalent rank with not less than 15 years of service applying for

Ph.D. degree in Defence and Strategic Studies.

In case, number of candidates passing JRF are more than the number of vacancies in a particular subject, their marks in Post-Graduation will also be taken into account to decide the merit for their admission in

Ph.D. programme. The categories for the candidates exempted from Entrance Test will be given preference over the candidates qualifying through Entrance Test.

The admission shall be based on the criteria notified by the University, keeping in view the guidelines/norms in this regard issued by the UGC and other statutory bodies concerned and taking into account the

reservation policy of the State Government of Uttar Pradesh from time to time into different Vertical and Horizontal-categories viz. unreserved, reserved for OBC/SC/ST/Differently-Abled and so classified for each Department/Subject.

University shall admit candidates by a two-stage process through:

I. i. Qualifying in an Entrance Test which will contain 100 multiple-

choice objective-type questions of 4 marks each (maximum 400 marks) and shall consist of 50% of research methodology and 50%

shall be subject specific of two hours’ duration for assessing subject expertise, subject proficiency and subject knowledge.

ii. There shall be negative marking. On each wrong answer, 1 mark

will be deducted. iii. The minimum qualifying marks for the Entrance Test shall be 50

percent marks. Provided that a relaxation of 5% of marks (from 50% to 45%) shall

be allowed for the candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC (Non-Creamy layers)/ Differently-abled category in the entrance examination conducted by the University.

Provided further that the percentage of marks shall not be rounded-off to the next higher integer.

iv. The Entrance Test shall be conducted ordinarily in the University

campus but in special circumstances, it will be conducted in Government Degree Colleges/Government aided degree colleges. The Entrance test center(s) shall be notified in advance (changes

of centers, if any, will also be notified well in advance) to the applicants.

v. Guidelines for conducting written examination for persons with disabilities will be followed as defined in Rights of persons with

Disabilities Act, 2016 (RPwD Act, 2106) which came into force from 19-04-2017.

vi. Based on the marks obtained in Entrance test, Subject wise/Category wise merit lists will be prepared. The qualified applicants, in order of merit in each subject would be called for Course Work as per the available number of vacant Ph.D. seats.

This eligibility pertains to the level of being called for the Course Work only and may not guarantee admission to Ph.D. programme.

II. The Research Degree Committee (RDC) shall arrange for an interview/viva-voce which shall include Presentations on the research interest/area.

University shall grant Registration/Admission to candidate for Ph.D.

programme on the recommendation of Research Degree Committee

(RDC) and its approval by the Vice-Chancellor.

The candidate would be required to submit the fee for Ph.D. work (registration/continuation of the registration fee) every year or part thereof.

Eligibility for admission to the Ph.D. Programme WARNING

Subject to the conditions stipulated in UGC Regulations-2016, the

following persons are eligible to seek admission to the Ph.D. programme:

Candidate for admission to the Ph.D. programme shall have a Master’s

degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s

degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least

55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade “B” in the UGC 7-point

scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system

is followed) or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational Institute

accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is

approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or

incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory

authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or

assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.

A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent

relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC

(non-creamy layer)/Differently-abled and other category of candidate

as per the decision of the Commission from time to time, or for those

who had obtained their Master’s degree prior to 19th September, 1991.

The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale

wherever grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the

category mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualifying

marks without including the grace mark procedures.

i. A candidate shall ordinarily be permitted to pursue research for

the Ph.D. degree in the subject in which he/she holds Master’s

degree.

Candidates are advised to check their eligibility to appear

for the CSJMU ET2019. The organizing institution will not

verify your eligibility. Your eligibility will be verified at

the time of counselling with original testimonials/documents.

For any eventuality at the time of admission candidates will

solely be responsible.

Provided that an M.Com. or M.Sc. (Ag) in Agriculture Economics

may be permitted to work for Ph.D. degree in Economics in the

Faculty of Art and an M.A. in Economics may be permitted to

work for the Ph.D. Degree in Agriculture Economics in the

Faculty of Agriculture.

Provided further that an M.A. or M.Sc. in Mathematics may be

permitted to work for Ph.D. degree in Statistics in the Faculty of

Science.

Provided a candidate holding M.D. Degree in Psychological

Medicine (in the Faculty of Medicine) is eligible to supplicate for

Ph.D. degree in Psychology.

ii. In Faculty of Ayurveda, however, a candidate having M.D.

(Ayurveda) degree in the subject concerned or equivalent degree

of another University recognized by this University with at least

60% (55% for SC/ST/ Differently-abled candidates) marks shall

be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. programme in Ayurveda.

iii. In faculty of Medicine, a candidate having M.D./M.S. degree in

the subject concerned or equivalent degree of another University

recognized by this University/having a post graduate degree with

at least 60% (55% for SC/ST/ Differently-abled candidates)

marks shall be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. programme in

Medicine.

iv. Research on living authors is not permissible.

Note: Any dispute arising out of the present notification shall be subject to the jurisdiction of

the court situated at Kanpur.

Application fee is Rs. 1,500/- (Rs. One Thousand Five Hundred) for

General and OBC category and Rs. 1000/- (Rs. One Thousand) for

SC/ST category and PwD subcategory. Please note that this fee is non-refundable under any circumstances. Payment of application fee has to be made through online payment mode only.

General Guidelines for filling up the application form

1. The Ph.D. Application form has to be filled Online for admission to

the Ph.D. Program.

2. The Online Application form will be filled by candidates required to

appear for the Entrance Test as well as candidates exempted from

the Entrance Test for admission to Ph.D. programme.

3. Before applying online, candidates are required to keep ready the

following documents in JPEG format for uploading as per the

prescribed size:

✓ Category Certificate (if applicable) ✓ 10th & 12th level Mark sheet

✓ UG Mark sheet and Degree Certificate ✓ PG Mark sheet and Degree Certificate

4. A Model Application Form is available for making accurate entries

in the online Application form.

5. Fill in the Application Form only if you are satisfied about your

eligibility for admission to the program. However, mere fulfilment

of eligibility criteria does not give guarantee for admission to the

Ph.D. programme.

6. University shall not be liable for the correctness and authenticity

of the information/ documents provided in the online application.

7. The University has the right to cancel, at any stage, the admission

for the candidate who is found admitted to a course to which

he/she is not entitled, being ineligible in accordance with the

statues and regulations in force or it is found that the documents

submitted by the candidate are not genuine.

8. Obtained printout of the application form with all the enclosures

9. Applications received after the due date or without the prescribed

Fee and other documents or incompletely filled-in application will

be summarily rejected.

10. Merely submission of an application form, does not constitute a

claim for a seat or admission to the Ph.D. program.
