The Marketing Association of the University of Groningen is an interdepartmental study association for students in the field of Economics, Business Administration, Communication Sciences and Psychology, which acts as an intermediary between marketing theory and marketing practice. The MARUG was founded in 1981 by prof. dr. P.S.H. Leeflang, professor at the marketing department of the faculty of Economics & Business Studies at the University of Groningen. The main goal of the MARUG is to facilitate the exchange of marketing knowledge and experience, by offering various activities. In order to realize this, contact with the university and its students on the one hand, and contact with business life on the other hand are managed strongly. Currently, the MARUG has 1500 members. A typical MARUG member would be an active, social, intelligent and enthusiastic student who is willing to broaden his or her marketing knowledge in addition his or her studies. Besides, a large number of scientists and working professionals are connected to the MARUG. The MARUG comprises 12 committees and two financially independent foundations. The MARUG is part of the Marketing Association of the Netherlands (MAN), together with Marketing Associations from Amsterdam, Maastricht, Rotterdam and Tilburg.

It is important to develop yourself next to your studies. Therefore, each year the MARUG organizes four courses on various topics. Two courses will be organized each semester that can help you develop specific skills that are useful in your studies or even required by your future employers. Examples of courses that took place in recent years are an SPSS course, an InDesign & Photoshop course and courses on Google Analytics and Google Adwords Skills.

Courses

During the academic year the MARUG organizes multiple inhousedays. On these days you will visit a company with fellow students and you will be given the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes. This way students can discover the company and their working methods, but you might also take the chance to present yourself to a company as a (future) candidate for an internship or job.

Next to the separate inhousedays on which you visit a single company, the MARUG also organizes inhousetours. These consists of two or three days during which you will visit multiple companies.

By becoming a MARUG member you will be updated about marketing developments and internship possibilities of marketing companies. Furthermore, you will get a discount on all MARUG events. Events organized by the MARUG are for example the Recruitment Days and the MARUG Conference. Also, the MARUG organizes a social every first Thursday of the month at ‘de Blauwe Engel’ with drinks for only €0,50! In addition to participation in events, you will also have the opportunity to organize events yourself in one of our committees. By organizing an event, you will get in contact with many students and companies, but above all, you will have an amazing time at MARUG and you will get to know many other enthusiastic active members. If you are interested in joining one of our committees, you can contact our Internal Relations Maylen de Koning at [email protected]. An active membership is not only focused on your professional development, it entails more! Enthusiastic active members are very important for a study association. That is the reason why the MARUG organizes several activities for her active members. Every month, we organize the MARUG Social. Besides that, we organize an active members weekend, ‘PACjesavond’ celebration, and a surprise activity. Last but not least, the MARUG Board organizes a dinner to thank you for your contribution.

Events Events

The MARUG Conference is the largest Marketing Conference in the Netherlands with about 500 students and professionals participating. During this day, students and companies with an interest in marketing come together to exchange ideas and to study interesting cases related to marketing and the day’s theme. Both the academic and practical aspects of the theme will be enlightened through lectures, workshops, demonstrations and masterclasses. These will be offered by a wide range of inspiring companies. In addition, there will be several recruitment activities in the form of a lunch, social and dinner.*Dutch/English speaking event (including an interpreter for internationals)

During the Recruitment Days, 500 students of the faculty of Economics and Business will focus on their future career in business. Well-known companies provide students with information about internships, traineeships and their first jobs. This four-day event is a partnership between the MARUG and EBF. During these days, students have the opportunity to get in touch with companies in a formal as well as an informal way. Every day ends with a social get-together, during which the recruiters of the different companies will join as well. *Dutch/English speaking event

International Marketing Experience

The MARUG International Marketing Experience gives both Dutch and international students the opportunity to do marketing related research in a large European city. A group of 30 selected students will travel abroad and visit international companies that provide us with interesting cases, masterclasses or another interactive program. Next to the company visits there will be sufficient time to discover the city and visit cultural highlights. The daily program will obviously not end at 6 p.m. because the evenings will be filled with activities as well!*English speaking event

The Dublin Inhousetour offers both Dutch and international students the opportunity to visit the headquarters of innovative businesses that focus on the online world. During previous editions, we visited companies like Google, Facebook, and LinkedIn. For the Dublin Inhousetour, 30 students will be selected based on their cv. During our stay in Dublin, there will be presentations and tours at the offices we will visit. Furthermore, there are many recruitment opportunities at the companies visited for students participating in the tour. Next to company visits, we will be discovering the beautiful city of Dublin. *English speaking event

The ComMa Conference is a cooperation between the MARUG and ‘Commotie’, the study association of Communication and Information Sciences. This Conference is being organized for students interested in both marketing and communication. During the Conference the link between these two fields is covered by workshops and lectures about interesting subjects.*Dutch speaking event

Events Marketing Association Netherlands

The Battle of Marketeers is the event where you can show your marketing skills. On this day, more than 75 Bachelor and Master students are battling for the title of ‘Greatest Marketing Talent of Groningen’. It is an interactive day with challenging cases, developed by several interesting companies. You will work on these cases in a team during the qualification rounds and in the end the jury will award the team that came up with the best and most creative solution.*Dutch speaking event

Mind over Marketing is a relatively small event that focuses on Marketing Psychology. Consumer behaviour and the effect this behaviour has plays a gigantic role within marketing. That is why it is not surprising that marketing and psychology are getting more and more popular. The event consists of several lectures by interesting speakers and it is ideal for students who are interested in both marketing and psychology.*English speaking event

Battle of Marketeers

Mind over Marketing

The Commercial Night particularly concerns online advertising and TV commercials. Several companies and lecturers are invited to share and discuss their knowledge with an international audience. The aim of the event is to inform students about changes and developments in television and online advertising, recent trends and psychological triggers. This is a great opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge from the business world.*English speaking event

The National Marketing Battle is the largest Dutch recruiting event for academic students in the field of marketing. The unique aspect of this event is that several well-known firms take part in the Battle, which creates considerable networking opportunities. The event is therefore focused on students from Dutch universities who are in the final phase of their studies. The Battle consists of inhouse days and the two-day finals. At the end of the final day one of the teams will go home with the title of “Greatest Marketing Talent 2017” and the corresponding cash prize of €2.000.*Dutch speaking event

The Dutch Marketing Thesis Award (DMTA) is the platform for students who graduate with a thesis related to marketing. In all cities of the connected Marketing Associations a Thesis Award will be handed out and these winners will continue the battle in the national finals. Out of these theses the expert jury members will choose the winner. The winner will be awarded with a great cash prize.*English speaking event

The RM Academy offers the opportunity to bring Register Marketeers in touch with students. Register Marketeers are marketeers that have over 15 years of work experience in the field of marketing. In this way, Register Marketeers are able to share their knowledge with students through presentations and workshops and the Marketeers will get an innovative approach on marketing from the students. an event that is part of the course Strategic Marketing. This day consists of several readings and workshops by diverse companies. During the workshops you will get the chance to gain more knowledge about these interesting companies and their field of marketing.*English speaking event

The Brand Experience is an event that is part of the course Brand and Product Management. This day consists of several lectures and workshops concerning the topic Branding. In addition, different challenging cases about branding strategies are offered by the participating companies. Students will think, discuss and brainstorm about these cases, and in the end present their ideas.*English speaking eventCareer Day

The MARUG Intelligence Event offers you the great opportunity to gain more information on how marketing intelligence works in practice. You will meet interesting companies, who will give short presentations about who they are, what they do and how they work with big data. In addition, there will be workshops hosted by the participating companies. Each student takes part in one challenging workshop in which one will be working with interesting data.*English speaking event

The Marketing Seminar will present to you an underexposed theme within marketing. During the event, several interesting speakers will delve into this theme and provide you with their knowledge.*English speaking event

‘Markante Media’ & Career opportunities

Up to 2013, the MARUG published the Markant Magazine on a quarterly basis. The Markant Magazine could be seen as the marketing magazine for the marketing interested student of Groningen. Eventually, the transition was made to a digital version of the magazine: Markante Media, which can be found on the website Marug.nl. The content of Markante Media includes blogs, advertorials, videos, virals and articles to promote MARUG events. The Marug.nl Media Team is responsible for the content of Markante Media. The committee consists of various editors and designers and as a team they write and design the blogs and keep you updated about the latest marketing trends three times a week.

The MARUG strives to provide all students interested in marketing with the tools they need for a future career in the field of marketing. The MARUG assists students in their search for job and internship vacancies. The career page of the Marug.nl website offers information about a diverse range of internships, vacancies and traineeships and gives students the opportunity to apply for the company they find interesting.
