• Start:Start:Start:Start: The bell rings at 7:55. Children line up outside their classrooms and

wait quietly for the teacher. The gates are locked at 8:05. Late learners

are to report to the front entrance in Ronleigh Road.

• EndEndEndEnd: School ends at 14:40 on Mondays; at 13:00 on Tuesdays and Fridays and

at 13:30 on Wednesdays and Thursday.

• Children may be collected at the Park Road gate. If

their lift hasn’t arrived after 15 minutes, they must

proceed to the “Shelter” outside the Aftercare. Our

day does not end when the Grade 2’s go home. We

are involved in meetings and sport and cannot look

after your children once the bell has rung.

• Please make sure your child is very clear about the transport arrangements

you have made.

• MoneyMoneyMoneyMoney must be sent to school in a sealed envelope. Your child’s name, the

amount and what the money is for must be clearly printed on the front.

YOU must fill in the money detailsmoney detailsmoney detailsmoney details at the front of the Homework Diary.

* Homework ProceduresHomework ProceduresHomework ProceduresHomework Procedures

• Homework provides opportunities for revision and extention.

• Please establish a homework routine from the word go. • Allow some play or relax time after school before you

begin homework. • Check the Diary daily. We expect homework to be done.

If, for some reason it is not complete, write a quick note to explain why in the diary.

• Do not do the homework for your child. You are the “guide/supervisor”. • Homework must be done in a quiet, relaxed environment, uninterrupted by

younger siblings or TV

• Weekly planners Weekly planners Weekly planners Weekly planners - the children will receive a weekly planner every Friday. You will find it in their BBB. This will keep you informed of homework extras, projects, outings and upcoming school events. This must also be signed once you have taken careful note of its contents. We are sure you will find these planners very helpful.

* ReadingReadingReadingReading • It is important to read stories to your child as often as possible. This helps

to stimulate the imagination, develop creativity and increase your child’s vocabulary. Please join your local library – it’s free!

• It is important that you listen to your child read. Fluency and expression are skills that develop with regular practice. Spend time focusing on the pictures, as unfamiliar words are sometimes recognized because of pictures. Ask questions and help your child understand what he/she is reading.

* PhonicsPhonicsPhonicsPhonics

We build on the Grade 1 Phonics. The new sounds are recorded in your child’s Spelling Book. Revise these daily as a weekly test is given.

* WritingWritingWritingWriting We introduce the Capital LettersCapital LettersCapital LettersCapital Letters and revise these alongside the lowercase letters. Some children develop their own ways of writing a letter – ignoring how they have been taught. The wrong habit takes a long time to correct! Please refer to the writing chart found in the BBB and have lots of scrap paper to practice on. Ensure your child has the correct pencil grip.

* MathsMathsMathsMaths • Maths is all around us and we encourage you to include Maths vocabulary in

your daily conversations. Ask questions like: Who has moremoremoremore? Who has lesslesslessless? Do we have the samethe samethe samethe same amount? How many more/less have you got? Discuss objects that are smaller/bigger thansmaller/bigger thansmaller/bigger thansmaller/bigger than others. Use words like before, after, before, after, before, after, before, after, between. between. between. between. Mention words like kilometres when you drive, litres when you shop and kilograms when you bake, etc..

• Practice countingcountingcountingcounting in 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s forwards and backwards on a regular basis.

• Children get the opportunity to practise calculations and problem solving skills at home on a daily basis. A page will be sent home in the flip file on a Friday and will be collected the following Friday. Please make sure it is completed each day. Parents are expected to time the bonds, mark and guide the children to learn from their mistakes if any are made.

* AssessmentsAssessmentsAssessmentsAssessments • Assessments are done continuously throughout the term together with our

Formal Assessment Tasks (FATS). We send out a planner of the assessments early in each term, so that you can help your child revise and prepare.

* BirBirBirBirtttthhhhdaysdaysdaysdays • Your child may come in “civvies” on his/her birthday. If the birthday falls on a weekend, you may choose the Friday or Monday to wear casual clothes.

• If you would like to celebrate the occasion of your child’s birthday at school, please do NOT send a cake unless you have cut it up at home. It is really difficult for us to cut up and share

a cream cake into 32 slices!. • Sean Parnham, who runs our tuck shop, makes delicious cupcakes for R6

each and will deliver them to the classroom on your child’s special day. Please ensure that you give him 2 days notice. Contact him on 084 342 5470

* School lunchesSchool lunchesSchool lunchesSchool lunches Please make sure your child gets a healthy lunch each day.

• Include raw fruit and vegetables daily (tomatoes, cucumber and carrot sticks).

• Nuts and boiled eggs are a good source of protein. • Use wholewheat bread for sandwiches. Wraps, pasta

and rice salads are a good alternative to sandwiches. • A bottle of plain water is essential to keep hydrated. • Please discourage your children from buying junk food

from the taxi operators before or after school. • Tuckshop lunch orders must be placed before school.
