Chairperson’s Welcome 2017

Hello everyone,

I am so happy to once again have this opportunity to write a note ofthanks to all of you who continue to support this branch charity in one oranother way; and you may see yourselves in the photographs within thisbooklet that mark some very special occasions. So grab a cup (orglass) of whatever you fancy and settle back for 20 minutes or so tohave a browse through.

We had some amazing fund raising events in 2016, all well attended byour supporters, and our K9 Party in the Park last July was one of our best ever. Without the help ofour very special friends who volunteer to help either organise or run the events, we really wouldn’tsee the successes that we do. Our fundraising team has put together a diary of activities and eventsfor this year that I just know you will love – watch out for our new function arranged for October: TheMonster Ball to be held at the Cedar Court Hotel at Ainley Top, it is going to be great fun so makesure you book your ticket early.

Our shops continue to contribute towards the animal care costs but sadly two were badly affectedfrom the floods of Boxing Day 2015. Hebden Bridge was far worse than we had feared and it wasNovember 17th before it opened its doors again. But how wonderful to see so many of our regularcustomers returning along with quite a few new customers I think. Elland is the other shop whichsuffered because the bridge was closed. We are hopeful that when the bridge fully openscustomers will return here too. We are so dependent on your generous donations of clothing, bric-a-brac, media, furniture, accessories and household to keep our shops stocked, so please doremember us when having a turnout.

Of course all the profit raised from these events and our shops goes directly to fund the AnimalCentre and branch welfare work and last year it enabled us to accept 846 animals into our care and743 were found new and loving homes. All of those animals came to usbecause they had suffered terrible neglect, cruelty or were abandoned orat risk. Many of the dogs are so frightened, having lived their lives inappalling circumstances – often in cages – and don’t know how to livewithout fear. It takes a lot of tlc, time and positive training through theirown personal training plan but the results are nothing short ofmiraculous. We are extremely proud of our staff and grateful to ourvolunteers who work so hard to bring about these small miracles. Butthen I am proud of all our staff and volunteers, no matter which jobs theydo, because I know they choose to work for a cause they believe in.

About Our Branch

Welcome to the RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield & District Branch, we are a self-funding branch of theRSPCA responsible for raising money locally to support our animal welfare work. Our main aim isto rehabilitate unwanted, abandoned and abused animals and find them loving, permanent homes. We rely on public donations and the generosity of our local community to keep the doors of ouranimal centre open.

The RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield & District Branch is a local charity supporting animal welfare inCalderdale and Kirklees. We support the National RSPCA Inspectorate by housing, rehabilitatingand rehoming the local animals in our area that have been subjected to cruelty.

Our Animal Centre is professionally managed by people passionate about animals and theirwelfare. The Centre provides safety for the many animals that are unwanted or cruelly treated. Ourmain role is as a rehoming centre and we are also a centre of excellence for the rehoming of elderlycats and dogs.

All of the animals we accept are abused, ill treated or sick and injured. They come to our centre viaour Inspectors, including dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, hamsters, ferrets, various wildlife andsmall livestock. Our vet examines every animal that we accept and our aim is to rehome healthyanimals into permanent loving homes. The staff are qualified to NVQ Level 2, National Diploma or RSPCA standard procedures andtherefore are not only competent, but also completely dedicated to animal welfare. We assist theInspectorate with cruelty case animals andnurse many of them back to good health.

We provide welfare assistance to those onbenefits by providing low cost neutering andmicro-chipping. Our professional team isalways on hand to offer friendly advice. Wealso have a commitment to local authoritiesand offer further education work experienceplacements to college students

We pride ourselves on the level of care thatwe offer to our dogs. Each dog is walkedand trained daily and has the opportunity totake part in agility. All animals areindividually assessed so that we can match them to the most suitable homes. The cattery is brightand welcoming and some of the cats even have their own televisions to help keep boredom at bay!We also have public speakers who will attend various functions to help inform people about thework of the branch.

All of our centre’s activities are funded by local donations, our own fundraising events and ournetwork of charity shops.

We also rely on support from our many dedicated volunteers, who help at our Animal Centre,Charity Shops and support our fundraising activities.

To adopt an animal from our Centre, you need to be over 18 yearsold. You will be asked to complete an application form. If you live inrented accommodation we will require written permission from thelandlord before being able to view any animals. Any animals thatare suitable and you are interested in, will be shown to you by amember of staff. If you see an animal that you would like torehome, we shall place a reserve on it. One of our home visitors will call to see you in your home. Allanimals have a health check from the vet before they are adopted. Current adoption fees: Dogs from £120, Puppies £150- £250,Cats from £65, Rabbits £25, Guinea pigs £10, Ferrets £30 andsmall miscellaneous animals range from £4 - £5.

Every animal will be examined by a vet prior to adoption. At this point we will be advised one of the following:

The animal appears healthy and can be adopted. There is or has been a medical condition which does not require further treatment but that potential adopters would needto be made aware of. This would also be declared to the Insurance Company which provides the 4 weeks free insuranceas part of the adoption. The animal has a condition which requires further investigation (e.g. blood tests/x-rays) or treatment and therefore is not available for adoption until further notice from the vet.

Please note that it is not feasible or cost effective to carry out x-rays or bloods on every animal that on veterinary examinationappears healthy just in case there is an underlying or pre-existingcondition.Most animals come to the centre with an unknown medical history. However where this information is available it will be provided topotential adopters and the Insurance company.

The adoption fee includes the following: Initial vaccinations, flea & worm treatment, micro-chipping, neutering, health check, 4 weeks’ freeinsurance (dogs, cats & rabbits), identity disc.

Home Visits

When an animal is reserved at the Animal Centre aHome Visitor will contact the prospective owner withinthree days of reserving the animal. Arrangements arethen made to visit the adopter’s home to make sure, both from the animals point of view and for the newowner, that everything is satisfactory. This is aninformal visit where we ask that all family members arepresent. It is an opportunity for us to answer yourquestions, impart useful information and also to checkthat you are happy with your choice of animal.

We encourage prospective adopters to collect theirnew pet within 24 hours of the home visit.

Micro-Chipping

If you have a pet and would like it to be micro chipped please phone 01422365628 to make an appointment. The micro-chip is the size of a grain of riceand is permanent. We do promote this procedure, which is painless. If you areunfortunate and your pet is lost, the dog wardens, vets, RSPCA Inspectors, andourselves all scan any animal which comes into our possession. If microchipped, the details of the owner are registered on a computer and your pet canbe speedily returned to you. The cost for micro chipping is £10. We can alsomicro chip for £8 for those on means tested benefits

Lost Animals

We do not take in stray dogs, this is the responsibility of the local council. The local councilcollects lost/stray dogs and takes them to their kennels. If you have lost your dog please phone yourlocal Dog Warden. The Centre now has an online lost and found “report and browse” facility. If youhave lost or found a pet please visit our website and send in a report. You will also be able tobrowse all the lost and found pets including those at our Centre.

Unfortunately your pet may have had an accident. Make enquiries with your local Centre, the vets, and police or sadly in the case of fatal accidents, the cleansing department of your local council.

We would encourage owners to report lost/found animals with Pets locate. www.petslocated.com

Elderly Animal Re-homing Scheme (EARS)

It is relatively common for healthy elderly dogs and cats (10 years+) to enter the RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield and District AnimalCentre, often due to their owner's ill health or death, but fewprospective adopters want to take on such an animal, mainly becauseof the possible financial implications.

To alleviate these animal's stress at suddenly becoming homeless and to facilitate rehoming, wehave a Scheme to provide support and assistance to members of the public over 18 years of agewishing to home an elderly animal.

ADOPTION ON THE EARS SCHEME For a monthly payment of £5.00 per month to the RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield and District Branch, the adopter qualifies for the following benefits:

A Booster vaccination and health check once a year Routine worming tablets and flea treatment Access to our Animal Centre vet during routine clinic times at £5.00 per consultation All current and future medication will be offered at a discounted price Prescription diets will be offered at a discounted price Euthanasia at RSPCA Animal CentreEmergency cover if an owner is hospitalized i.e. temporary 2 week foster care Discount cremation service if required

Many local vets are participating in the Scheme and will allowmembers a discount of up to 20%. This applies only to elective surgeryand the emergency treatment of accidents, sudden illness, injury, hospitalization and emergency euthanasia.

RSPCA Twilight Scheme

Can’t adopt an elderly animal? Why not pay for their care by joiningthe RSPCA Twilight Scheme. The Twilight Scheme has been set upto support our Elderly Animal Re-homing Scheme (EARS). Themajority of elderly animals require veterinary treatment before re-homing and your monthly donation will help towards the care of ourelderly animals. Please call in to our Branch or visit our website formore details.

Willing to Care

Who is The Scheme for?The Scheme is for any person over the age of eighteen who is concerned about the welfare of theirdog or cat after their death and requires the peace of mind that their pet will be rehomed with lovingnew owners.

How does the Scheme Work?• You must specify in your Will that you are leaving your pet to the RSPCA Halifax,

Huddersfield & District Branch under the “Willing to Care Scheme.”

• If you are taken into a nursing home or feel unable to look after your pet, you can sign your pet into our care for re homing and he/she will be given priority entrance.

• On being informed of a member’s death, the branch will immediately take special care of your beloved pet.

• If required we will arrange to collect your pet and bring him or her into our care.

• Using the answers to your pet’s questionnaire (updated annually) we will ensure that there is minimal stress to your pet by following where possible his/her likes/dislikes and routines.

• If your pet is over 10 years of age, we are especially well equipped to rehome him or her. The branch has an award winning Elderly Animal Re homing Scheme so we will automatically place your pet on this Scheme and look after him or her in a foster home until adoption.

• We will ensure your pet is adopted as soon as possible in a suitable home for the rest of his/her life. Careful home checks will be carried out to ensure we have the right home for your special pet.
