What can and can’t do
Use of ICT in language teaching, learning and evaluation
Computers CAN Computer CAN’T
Judge predetermined right-or-wrong answers, e.g., multiple choice and fill-in-the-blanks
Judge unexpected input
Provide immediate, yet fixed, feedback, suggestions, and encouragement
Provide individualized feedback beyond a predetermined list of messages
Provide authentic information through multimedia - texts, images, sounds, videos, and animations
Engage learner in rich negotiation of meaning characteristic of face-to-face interaction
Motivate task persistence Record learner’s writing, speech, and learning progress
Motivate depth and quality of engagement characteristic of human interaction

USE OF ICT IN LANGUAGE, TEACHING AND EVALUATION
1. Main findingsSchools use ICT to teach MFL for many reasons. The use of a multimedia PC suite can develop independent learning skills and enables self-assessment to take place.
2. Personalised learningIn the context of a multimedia suite, ICT facilitates personalised learning because pupils can work at their own pace and at their own level. This frees the teacher to circulate and help pupils appropriately.
3. Using new media
Where ICT is used in a whole-class context, such as with an interactive whiteboard (IW) or voting devices, a wide variety of new media is available to be used in language teaching.
4. Cultural context
It is possible to provide a window into the culture of countries where the target language is spoken by using the internet, displaying photos on a screen and using moving images with trailers and excerpts from films in the target language.
5. Productive skills
In order to practise speaking and writing skills, pupils should have the opportunity to be creative, for example, to make a short film, storyboard or sound recording.
6. Enhancing the learning of grammar
Using ICT in a whole-class context, such as with an IW, can enhance the learning of the structures of language.
7. Assessment for learning
By using voting devices in a lesson, the teacher is able very quickly and effectively to pinpoint the areas that the class understands and those that need further work and explanation.
8. Catering for different learning styles
Those whose preferred learning style is visual can be catered for particularly by the use of clear images and the possibility of colour coding words.
USE OF ICT IN TEACHING Teaching at School as well as Higher Education, mostly, concentrates on giving information which is not the sole objective of Teaching. Along with giving information, the other objectives are:
a. developing understanding and application of the concepts
b. developing expression power c. developing reasoning and thinking powerd. development of judgment and decision making abilitye.improving comprehension, speed and vocabulary f. developing self-concept and value clarificationg. developing proper study habitsh. developing tolerance and ambiguity, risk taking
capacity, scientific temper, etc.
USE OF ICT IN EVALUATION
The ICT can be made use in the evaluation. One such attempt has been made by Sansanwal and Dahiya (2006) who developed Computer Based Test in Research Methodology and Statistics. It has been titled as Test your Understanding: Research Methods and Statistics. This test can be used by individual student to evaluate his learning. The student can instantaneously get the feedback about the status of his understanding. If the answer is wrong, he even can get the correct answer. It goes a long way in improving the learning and teacher has no role to play in it. It is left up to students to use it. Such tests can be uploaded on the website for wider use.
