Commands – telling somebody to do something!

• Commands are important because if you go to a Spanish speaking country, they are one of the first things you will hear!

• You’ll use them when you order something at the restaurant…

……And when you go shopping!!And when you go shopping!!

Commands

• Informal

For someone you wouldcall “tú”

Informal, or familiar,speech is used amongfriends, coworkers, relatives, or when adressing a child.

• Formal

For someone you call“Usted” or “ustedes”

Remember, formal speechis generally used to bepolite or to expressrespect

What can you ask to do, let’s say… in Barcelona?!

Speak more slowly!

How to ask somebody to DO something?Part I - Tú

• To make the affirmative informal (tú) commands is easy!

• All you have to do is just use third person singular form:

hablar – habla!

comer - come!

escribir – escribe!

How to ask somebody to DO something?

Part II - Vosotros/-as

• To make the affirmative informal (vosotros/-as) commands is easy!

• Start with infinitive and change the final “r” to “d”:

hablar - r + d = hablad!comer - r + d = comed!escribir - r + d = escribid!

Let’s Practice!• Habla (tú) más lentamente.

Speak more slowly.

• Escribid (vosotros/-as) la carta.Write the letter.

• Come (tú) la cena.Eat the dinner.

The negative informal (vosotros/-as) commands are formed the following way:

hablar - ar + eis = No hableis

comer - er + ais = No comais

escribir - ir + ais = No escribais
