    Informal Assessment

    Student Interviews

    Conducted on April 18, 2013

    Questions asked:

    1) Which one of the four reciprocal teaching strategies would you like to talk about first?2) Define the strategy.3) How do you use the strategy?

(Repeat the questions for each of the four strategies)

    Responses from Student A:

    Strategy One

    1) Clara the Clarifier2) Shes from England and she clarifies things. You think about what you read and if somethingdoesnt make sense then you think some more, and reread to make sure it makes sense.

    3) I use Clara the Clarifier when I dont understand words or what the book said.Strategy Two

    1) Paula the Predictor2) Shes a fortune-teller and she predicts. Making predictions means what you think is going to

happen in the book or next.

    3) I look at the cover and the pictures in the book without reading and I guess whats going tohappen. While reading, I guess whats going to happen next.

    Strategy Three

    1) Sammy the Summarizer2) Sammys a cowboy that summarizes. Summarize means to read something and tell a short

    version of what you read.

    3) Summarizing helps you understand more because you can read and write down what youveread but in a shortened version. It helps you understand the book better.

    Strategy Four

    1) Quincy the Questionnaire2) Quincy is a game show host who asks questions. Questioning means asking something about

the book.3) You can ask questions if you dont understand something. Then you look at the story and you

can answer you own questions sometimes. Other times, you cant answer the question.

    2) Sammy is a boy who summarizes. Summarize means to think about what youre reading. Thenyou can retell what has happened.

    3) When youre reading a book like The Three Little Pigs, you would think about what you havealready read and then you use your knowledge about what you know about animals and you

    retell the story.

    Strategy Two

    1) Clara the Clarifier2) Clara clarifies. When you dont understand a word, you go over the sentence again.3) You use words you already know, go over spelling sounds, and put it all together to figure out

the word. If you cant figure it out then what youre reading wouldnt make sense and you

    would need to reread.

    Strategy Three

    1) Paula the Predictor2) Paula predicts. Predict means when you guess what happens next.3) To predict, the reader takes a guess of what is going to happen next by using their knowledgeof whats happened in the story. The reader understands more because if they are right or

wrong, they get more clues in the story.

    Strategy Four

    1) Quincy the Questionnaire2) Quincy is a game show host that asks questions. If you dont understand what youre reading

    then you should ask questions.

    3) The reader gets more clues from asking questions. The more knowledge you have about thestory, the more interesting it is. I understand stories more when I ask questions because I

    think about what Im reading.
