Pricing subsidies make sugary

drinks the least expensive

source of calories.i

• Production of sugary drinks is made cheaper and profits higher through federal government subsidies for corn ($2.7 billion in 2012) and the high fructose corn syrup used extensively as a sugary drink sweetener.xi

• Taxpayers spend $84.4 billion on corn production, $8.1 billion of which funded production of corn starch and sweeteners.xii

• Just as mattresses, oil, tires and electronics have disposal fees to offset product environmental impact, there should be a health impact fee on sugary drinks to offset the negative health impacts.
