An Infographic is a visual representation, accompanied by minimal text, intended to give an easily understood

overview, often of a complex subject (www.dictionary.com)

This Survival Guide contains Infographics that show how you can survive with ordinary items - MacGyver style. :)

Creating an Infographic takes time, effort and more skill than might seem obvious. I am proud of our O.L.V. 8th graders, who created this Printer-Friendly Survival Guide just in case of the unexpected!

(BTW, this project was planned months before the current Covid-19 outbreak!)

For this project, students performed jobs found in a real-world publishing environment and worked in a shared folder structure within Google Drive. As researchers, students selected items in a

shared spreadsheet, and gathered data in a Google Docs table. As freelance writers, they created blurbs from their research. As graphic artists, they created original Infographics in Google Slides

and a personal logo using their initials. As staff editor’s, they analyzed and commented on each other’s work and as web editors, they added hyperlinks to navigate within our Survival Guide as well

as to external sources. But, that’s not all! Just like in the real-world, there was an unexpected “Letter to the Editor” informing them of the company’s need to save money on ink so all designs had

to be modified to be “printer-friendly” (my favorite lesson of them all!)

I hope this Survival Guide gives you some insight into the extraordinary survival capacity of ordinary things and the amazing dedication and talent of our O.L.V.’s 8th graders. :) -MrsD.

Baking Soda could be use to freshen your breath by making a simple paste of water and baking soda.

Baking soda, unlike most commercial air fresheners, doesn't mask odors, “it absorbs them,"

Headband and Rubber Band Survival Tips Wrap several rubber bands around the end of a pole or stick to create a handy grip. If you need to grab something this is handy.

Slice an apple into wedges. Then place all the wedges back together and wrap a clean rubber band around them so the apple looks whole again. It will keep the apple wedges from browning about 50% longer than just tossing the wedges in a standard sandwich bag. If you need an emergency stash of food this is good because it keeps fruit staying fresh 50% longer.

Use the bands to wrap around your pant legs to make them tight around the bottom of your legs. This will help you keep warm and not freeze.

Wrap a hair tie on the tube of a liquid soap dispenser, just above the neck of the bottle. Now using the pump still dispenses soap but not the ridiculous amount that usually comes out. So if you need liquid soap, you have.
