Table 1 Features, Functions and Benefits of the PowerEdge 6600 and PowerEdge 6650

Feature Benefit

Performance

Quad Intel Xeon processors MP at 1.5GHz, 1.9 and 2.0GHz with up to 2MB of on die L3 cache and 400 MHz front side bus (FSB) Hyper-threading

Scalable performance with the fastest Pentium Xeon processors. Designed to maximize performance on applications that require the utmost in speed with larger footprints (i.e., code working set size), such as database, OLTP, and messaging environments, and benefit from larger cache and multiple processors.

Performance improvement on multi-threaded applications

ServerWorks GC HE chipset

GC-HE architecture delivers 3.2 GB/s of memory bandwidth, peer-to-peer (7 buses) bus architecture with up to 5GB/s I/O throughput. GC-HE is the industry's first platform to provide host PCI-X support.

GC-HE chipset provides excellent memory performance, data protection mechanisms (ECC, chipkill) and access latency control; it helps maximize I/O bandwidth and improves the bus efficiency from the North Bridge to the PCI I/O Bridges.

Supports 4 way interleaved memory for higher DRAM bandwidth (versus 2 way interleaved memory).

PCI-X – all hot plug Improved bus efficiency and error handling

64-bit/100Mhz PCI-X slots provide up to 800MB/s burst rate bandwidth to support maximum performance of next-generation peripheral devices.

Up to 32GB DDR 200 SDRAM

High levels of memory support increased performance in memory intensive applications (data mining, data warehouse, simulations). The more RAM a system has the less often it will need to access the storage system and the fewer clock cycles are spent idle as the data slowly streams through the system. Also, double data rate (DDR) memory is designed to allow for twice the amount of data in the same amount of bandwidth.

Embedded single channel Ultra3 SCSI Controller

Embedded single channel Adaptec 7892 SCSI controller provides up to 160MB/s interface from system bus to internal hard drives or tape drives. Can be used internally or externally.

Availability

ECC Memory with “chipkill”

This feature allows the system to tolerate multi-bit memory errors of a memory chip on a DIMM, including the failure of an entire chip. Not only does the error correcting code (ECC) logic in the chipset correct any single bit error in memory, it can also correct up to 8 bits in error from the same memory chip. This is important because most memory chip failures result in a correctable error, and this allows the system to continue operating without interruption.

Page 5: INFOBrief - Dell United States Official Site | Dell United · PDF file · 2005-09-02chip failure. Dell Enterprise ... The more RAM a system has the less often it will need to access

Dell Enterprise Systems Group Page 5 Updated January 2003

Feature Benefit

Spare Bank With Spare Bank (optional feature), it is possible to designate one memory bank (“row”) as spare memory and the remaining banks as system memory. If several single-bit errors (correctible) are generated from a memory bank in a short amount of time, the BIOS will initiate (through the chipset) a copy of all data from this faulty DIMM bank to the spare bank. This helps maintain server availability and memory reliability without service intervention. The benefit of Spare Bank Memory is to prevent a faulty memory DIMM that is creating single-bit errors from degrading into a fatal multi-bit error that would crash the system.

Memory Mirror With Memory Mirror (optional feature), it is possible to designate 2 banks (half of the entire memory) as spare memory. When enabled, all writes to memory are sent to both mirrors by the chipset. All reads are from the Primary Mirror. If a multi-bit error (normally uncorrectable) is discovered on a read from the Primary Mirror the chipset will automatically replace this faulty data with data from the Secondary Mirror. The chipset will switch to the Secondary Mirror for further reads leaving the faulty Primary Mirror unused. The feature allows the system to survive a multi-bit memory error that is normally fatal to servers even with ECC protection.

Hot-plug Redundant Power, hot-plug SCSI hard drives, Hot plug / redundant fans, hot plug PCI slots

Allows power supply, fans, and PCI card replacement without bringing the server down.

Helps maximize uptime by ensuring that at least one key component is running at all times and if one fails, it can be replaced quickly while the system is running (hot-plug/redundant)

Dual embedded Gigabit NICs

Provides fail over support and maximizes I/O throughput of embedded NICs. Embedded NICs are backward compatible to 10/100 Mb/s speeds.

Expandability

Up to 32GB of DDR SDRAM

System supports minimum of 512MB of DDR SDRAM, scalable to 32GB (using 2GB size DIMM). The system offers 4:1 memory interleaving. With scalable memory it is possible to increase server memory as application demands increase.

Up to 12 x 1” internal hard drives for 6600 and up to 5 x 1” for 6650. Both systems use same hard-drives carriers

Provides up to 1752/730GB* of internal storage

Hard drives can be interchanged between the two system and customers only need to stock one type of part.

PowerEdge 6600 11 slots total 10 64-bit/100MHz & 1 32-bit/33MHX PowerEdge 6650 8 slots total 7 64-bit/100MHz & 1 32-

11(PE6600) or 8 (PE6650) I/O slots provide room for additional functionality and future expansion.

When evaluating the feature differences of the PowerEdge 2650, 4600, 6600 and 6650, the initial system choice typically centers on the need for either a 2-way or a 4-way system.

If rack density is a critical requirement, then the PowerEdge 2650 and the PowerEdge 6650 are designed for the rack dense environment. If rack density is not a requirement and internal storage is a key buying criteria,

Page 12: INFOBrief - Dell United States Official Site | Dell United · PDF file · 2005-09-02chip failure. Dell Enterprise ... The more RAM a system has the less often it will need to access

Dell Enterprise Systems Group Page 12 Updated January 2003

then the PowerEdge 4600 and 6600 are options as they are designed for expandability.

Scalability, performance, and price are the key differentiating factors between Dell’s higher-end two-way servers (PowerEdge 2650 and 4600) and Dell’s enterprise-class servers (PowerEdge 6600/6650). Although PowerEdge 2-way servers incorporate some of the same technologies, there are several key differentiators between PowerEdge 2-way and 4-way servers.

Specifically, the PowerEdge 6600/6650 enterprise-class servers support up to four processors, higher levels of memory (32GB2 vs. 24GB3 on the PowerEdge 4600 and 12GB4 on the PowerEdge 2650 ) larger on die cache levels (up to 2.5MB vs. 512KB), and more I/O bandwidth, making them ideal high-end application servers.

The PowerEdge 4600 and the PowerEdge 2650 are ideal solutions for customers who are looking for high performance, high availability servers at a lower price point than is available in an enterprise-class server.

When making a decision between Dell’s 2-way servers and Dell’s 4 way servers, the decision comes down to the following issues/considerations:

1. Will the system (s) be used to manage intensive enterprise workloads, such as databases, messaging and e-commerce applications that will require symmetric multi-processing (SMP) capabilities and extensive on die cache? (i.e. is the application more likely to benefit from processor speed [performance] or larger cache and memory [scalable performance]?) This is the key differentiation between 2-way and 4-way servers. With quad Xeon processors supporting larger on die cache, higher I/O bandwidth, and support for more memory, the PowerEdge 6600/6650 provide a higher level of absolute performance, performance scalability, headroom, and expandability (investment protection) than the PowerEdge 4600. Applications with larger footprints (i.e. code working set size), such as database, OLTP, and messaging environments, benefit more from larger cache and multiple processors. For these applications, 4-way servers may offer enough scalability/performance (4 processors/large on die cache) to meet their needs.

2. Is the application mission critical? How important are availability features?

2 Using 2GB size DIMMs 3 Using 2GB size DIMMs 4 Using 2GB size DIMMs

Page 13: INFOBrief - Dell United States Official Site | Dell United · PDF file · 2005-09-02chip failure. Dell Enterprise ... The more RAM a system has the less often it will need to access

Dell Enterprise Systems Group Page 13 Updated January 2003

The PowerEdge 6600/6650 provide the most availability features for enterprise class support that Dell offers. The PowerEdge 6600/6650 provide hot plug redundant power standard, more hard drives (vs. 4600), more hot plug PCI slots, more memory support, and offers memory availability technologies such as chipkill correct technology, Memory Mirror and Spare Bank memory.

3. Is a higher level of serviceability an important factor? The PowerEdge 6600/6650 have been designed to run mission critical applications with 24x7 requirements, or to provide server consolidation.
