Why Permaculture? Permaculture is an integrated design system that provides a framework for consciously designed landscapes that provide diversity, stability, and resilience for individuals and communities. Permaculture is widely recognized as one of the most effective design methodologies for attaining sustainability worldwide. Permaculture is in 160 countries with many thousands of grassroots projects on-the-ground.

Who is this course for? This course is designed and relevant for individuals with a dedicated interest in sustainable living, sustainable food production and all other aspects relating to sustainability, whether for private/ personal or work-related reasons. This course is equally relevant to people who work with Non-Government Organizations/ Government Agencies, for community organizers working in international development and/or social entrepreneurship, as well as volunteers and students.

Lead Instructor: Jeremiah Kidd is an internationally renowned permaculture designer and educator from Sante Fe (New Mexico, USA). Jeremiah has been working in the Permaculture, natural building and alternative technologies field for over 20 years with a passion for enhancing productive relationships between people and their surroundings. In 2000 Jeremiah established San Isidro Permaculture (www.sipermaculture.com.\), a design and installation company focused on permaculture design, water catchment, grey water systems, edible plant landscapes, erosion control & land restoration in the USA, Latin America, Africa and Asia. All participants will be awarded an internationally recognized Permaculture Design

Certificate issued by the Permaculture Research Institute of Kenya.

Course Outline: Participants will go through the complete process of designing and implementing a permaculture plan. Learn the concepts of sustainable living and improved self-reliance and attain hands on experience of design and implementation. Participants will learn how to develop sustainable systems which can be applied to all aspects of life through the observation and replication of natural patterning. We will learn how to create regenerative systems that provide for our basic needs while enhancing the environment, using a variety of learning techniques and strategies. Permaculture is an integrated design strategy incorporating food forests and jungle gardens, natural building, alternative economics, aquaculture and mapping to create a sustainable human habitat. We present an innovative approach through modeling the structure of Permaculture directly in the environment.

This is an intensive 14 day course presented through lectures, design approaches, guest presentations, group discussions, practical exercises, hands-on projects, projections, presentations, along with site visits and field trips. Using a variety of learning techniques and strategies this workshop will present Permaculture with various applications in mind. This course will assist you and/or your organization to integrate Permaculture Design aspects such as:

- Integrated Holistic Design - Design Priorities and Efficient Site Layout - Ecological Building - Integrated Pest Mgmt - Water Harvesting & Greywater Systems - Swale design and other erosion prevention methods - Increased and Resilient Biodiverse Food Production - Food Forestry (including grafting and superfoods) - Sustainable farming and household gardening for self-reliance - Biogas and Appropriate Energy Production - Soil building, Nutrient Cycling and Composting, - Composting Toilets and Sanitation - Waste Cycling (including glass cutting for glasses) - Earthworks - Clean Water and Drought Proofing - Health and Nutrition - Appropriate Technologies including Rocket Stoves - Aquaculture - Bio-Sand Filtration - Broad Acre Applications - Urban and Small Scale Site Design - Alternative Economics and Community Design - Livestock Integration and Beekeeping

Venue: Distant Relatives Ecolodge & Backpackers is a partner of the Permaculture Research Institute acting as a demonstration site. Distant Relatives is located on a 3 acre property nestled between the Giriama village of Fumbini and the beautiful emerald waters of Kilifi Creek on the stunning Kenyan Coast and along its long white sand beaches. The course fee includes tuition and a class handbook to take home, breakfast, tea & coffee breaks, lunch, transport for field trips, notebooks and presentation materials, access to permaculture books. As a bonus, all pariticpants will be invited to join on a sunset sailing cruise and offered 3 Day's FREE self-catering accommodation at Distant Relatives after the course to relax, go sightseeing or help around the site. This fee does not include accommodation, dinner, other drinks or transport to Distant Relatives. Fee also includes free access to all facilities (pool, beach, communal areas, communal kitchen, etc) as well as free entrance/ access to any other events that may take place during this period (eg. yoga sessions, live music events etc). Lead Instructor and Assistants will also meet with you and give you feedback about your personal site/ project to help guide your design. Please feel free to bring a plat or topographic map of your own site. Classes finish around 5pm daily to allow students time to relax, explore and enjoy the surrounding area and natural wonders such as the rare and unique phenomenon of bioluminescence! This course promises to be a great networking opportunity and a chance to make friends with like-minded people and professionals from different countries and backgrounds.
