Bob Keller, a former pastoral staff member of Faith Baptist Church, Taylors, SC, now functions as the Chaplain for the Pomona Police Department, Pomona, California. Endorsed by the Fundamental Baptist Fellowship International, Bob and Jane are members of Lighthouse Baptist Church in La Verne, California. They serve the Lord together in this very important ministry.

The statistics in law enforcement are staggering. Every 57 hours an officer is killed in the line of duty and every 22 hours one commits suicide. Eighty-nine percent of officers are divorced and seventy percent of seasoned officers have been married twice. They have the highest rate of stress, heart attacks, strokes, and broken homes.

The ministry of Bob and Jane is called "In Pursuit! Ministries of California" because they are "In Pursuit!" to reach those who are in law enforcement with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They are praying that the Lord would raise up many pastors of our Fundamental Baptist churches or lay people within the churches to work as part-time chaplains with their local law enforcement agencies.

it is not about the person. Their mission from the onset has, as stated on the main page to the website, been to

"...evangelistically reach out to people who are hurting, and uplift the Sufficient Christ to a suffering world."

Dear Fellow Pastor,

It is my sincere privilege to heartily recommend Brother Bob Keller and 'In Pursuit Ministries.' This last August on Sunday morning the 26th with the planning and support of Brother Keller and his dear wife, Jane, we had an extremely successful "First Responder's Sunday."

We invited law enforcement and fire department personnel &om several local agencies with the result of over 50 sworn officers attending our services on that day. Wonderful comments continue to this day from both the full-time duty as well as the volunteers who heard God's Word preached from Romans chapter thirteen. Our church banded together and served lunch to these dear men and women from the local police departments, sheriff departments, highway patrol, and fire departments.

If you are considering such a special day at your church I would strongly urge you to contact Brother Keller. He has a heart for the Lord, the local church, as well as the law enforcement and fire department personnel in our communities.

Thank you for your faithful service for -the Lord.

S M P L E WiTLCOME LETTER

Our purpose for this day has a Biblical foundation.

Romans 13:l-5

"Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But ifthou do that which is evil, be aJFaid for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake."

We believe that we not only have a civil responsibility to support our law enforcement officers, but that we also have Biblical mandate to support our law enforcement officers.

In a time of spiritual unrest in our nation, we observe the decay of respect for human life, and the decay of the respect for authority. Our purpose today is to show our support to you, and also offer to you our spiritual support. To encourage you in knowing that the population of this city in general support you and are behind you. We want you and your families to know that we are praying for you.

So may I on behalf of the spiritual community of Baptist Church say to you, our honored guests, Welcome.

Sample Welcome Letter

Today we would like to take the opportunity to honor our Law Officers. But who are these people?

They are husbands, wives, sons, daughters, and friends of someone, maybe even our friends or even one of us.

They are ridiculed, disrespected, and made fim of. They are the people we count on when we are in trouble, and the ones we despise when

we are pulled over for traffic violations because they are taking up our valuable time.

They are the men and woman who daily put their lives on the line to protect ours and keep our communities safe. These are the men and women who deserve our respect, support, and prayers.

The Word of God tells us that law officers are "Ministers of God."

Romans 13 : 1-7 "Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. B?hosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But ifthou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, bzit also for conscience sake. For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour."

As we go about our daily lives we should remember that the officers should not be "the forgotten few" but our role models, friends, and heros.

To all Officers:

Today we applaud you and your families for the sacrifices you make on a daily basis so that we can feel safe in our communities and homes. May God protect and lbess each and every one of you with happiness and health.

SAMPLE WELCOME LETTER

HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE A LA W ENFORCEMENT OFFICER?

Words and Phrases such as: Integrity / Concern for your fellow man / Dignity 1 Service 1 Usefulness / Caring 1 Dedicated / Conscientious / Protectors of life and Property

BUT, HOW CAN YOU REALLY DESCRIBE A LA W ENFORCEMENT OFFICER?

He or she is a:

Keeper of the Peace / A life long student 1 A well informed individual / A counselor / A psychologist / An encourager 1 A self starter / One who is quick on their feet 1 Alert / Observant / Fit / In Control / Assertive 1 An Investigator / An advocate of victim's rights.

They are:

Ethical / Polite / Truthful / Honest 1 Loyal. Men and women of sound judgement, possessors of exceptional perception, good decision makers. Innovators, pro-active and first responders. Skilled in verbal judo along with skill in physical alternatives!

A law enforcement officer is one who seeks to survive and prevail and to go home every day at the end of their shift.

A law enforcement officer is accountable before Almighty God, their department and to the general public. Everything a law enforcement officer does is done with due regard for public safety.

We, as law abiding citizens ought to think of them as friend, advocate and hero. We should be able to point to any one of them and say to our children: "Look, learn and emulate the qualities and characteristics of a law enforcement officer as you grow up to serve both God and country in whatever capacity to which you are called."

Dear Law Enforcement Officer:

We applaud you this day for serving our community with integrity purpose and resolve, knowing that you lay your lives on the line every day for us that we might be safe in our persons, our property and in our pursuit of happiness. May God truly bless and keep you safe and healthy all the days of your life. Amen!

It's hard to believe that this year we will hold our 1 1 th annual "Blue and White" Sunday here at Grace Baptist Church at 10:30 a.m. on February 23. The congregation and I feel as strongly now as we did 11 years ago that we appreciate you who risk your lives for our protection. This is just a small way we can show our gratitude and honor our officers.

We have been thrilled at the great turn out of officers and their families and the positive coverage the media has given to this special service year after year. I hope you will plan to be with us again this year.

This year we will be honoring one of Anderson's finest, Officer Chris Barnett, who was shot in the line of duty last fall while trying to apprehend two armed robbery suspects at Gwinn's Drug Store. Officer Barnett, as many of you already know, has since returned to full duty with a complete recovery. His story is a perfect example of the danger that our brave law enforcement officials face on a daily basis.

As another way of expressing our gratitude to you, we will provide a complimentary light lunch in our Fellowship Hall right after the service. We request that those planning to stay please call our church office and leave your name and how many will be joining you for dinner. You can reach our church office at (765) 643-7853. We would appreciate knowing as soon as possible, but must know by Monday, February 17, so we may plan the meal.

As a church, this is a special service we look forward to year-round. Please make this 1 1 th "Blue and White" Sunday special by honoring us with your presence. Of course, we would love to have your family and friends attend also.

With great appreciation,

W Leigh Crockett, Pastor ;' ,

Dear News Editor:

I'm writing to let you know about our 11th annual "Blue and White" Sunday coming up Sunday, February 23rd in our 10:30 a.m. service. The event is a way of showing our appreciation to the men and women who enforce the laws that protect us in this day of spiraling crime. Our goal is to encourage awareness of the sacrifices and risks ow police officers make to do their job well. As a citizen I am tired of our judicial system focusing so much on criminal's rights that our prisons have often become "holiday hotels" and "paying for crimes" has often become a joke.

Last year we had around 200 visitors, most of them law enforcement officers and their families, participate in this special service in which we wear white ribbons with blue in front of them to symbolize our prayers and respect for our protectors in law enforcement.

This year we will be honoring one of Anderson's finest, Officer Chris Barnett, who was shot in the line of duty last fall while trying to apprehend two armed robbery suspects at Gwinn's Drug Store. Officer Bamett, as many of you already know, has since returned to full duty with a complete recovery. His story is a perfect example of the danger that our brave law enforcement officials face on a daily basis.

Dear Neighbor,

This Sunday, Lighthouse Baptist Church will be hosting a Law Enforcement Appreciation Day (L.E.A.D.) As we have invited several different law enforcement agencies, there will be a number of officers present as well as their vehicles and equipment on display. Included in the equipment will be a sheriffs helicopter, which will be landing on our grass field.

The purpose of this letter is to make you aware of what will be happening so that you will not be surprised or concerned by the increased police activity in the neighborhood this Sunday. The day's events will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will conclude shortly after noon.

It is our church's desire to show our appreciation and support for law enforcement. The media has consistently portrayed officers in a negative light and we want to let these brave men and women, who protect our communities, know that we stand with them. If you feel the same way and would like to come and join us this Sunday, we would love to have you. I have enclosed a flyer, which will give you more details concerning L.E.A.D. Should you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me at (909) 392-4838.

Chef Frank J Wills West Covina Police Department 1444 West Garvey Avenue West Covina, CA 91790

Dear Chief Wills,

On Sunday November 5, 2006, Lighthouse Baptist Church of La Verne will be hosting our 4th annual "Law Enforcement Appreciation Day." This day will be dedicated to honoring the men and women who daily hazard their lives to protect our communities. It is our desire to extend our gratitude and heart-felt appreciation for all they do.

The event begins at 10:30 A.M. with special speaker Chaplain John C. Vaughn. Chaplain Vaughn has been the senior chaplain for the Greenville Police Department, Greenville, SC for 20 years and a reserve officer for 13 years. He also has served as the Pastor of Faith Baptist Church in Taylors, SC since 1977. Each officer in attendance will receive a variety of gifts from the church and community businesses and restaurants, for their spouses and children who are present on this day. Many government officials have been invited to attend and it is our desire to have a wide representation of law enforcement agencies and departments from the greater Los Angeles area present at this event. A complimentary lunch for the officers and their families will be served on the grounds immediately following the 10:30 A.M. service.

We would be greatly honored to have you in attendance on this day. Because it is our desire to honor as many police officers as possible, we are also requesting any available officers and equipment from your department such as:

Patrol Cars Search and Rescue vehicles Helicopters Mounted Units Motorcycle Units

K-9 Units S.W.A.T. equipment ? ? ?

We want to convey to every officer that we support them in what they do and that we hold them in high esteem. You can reach Pastor Brian Dunlop at the church office: (909) 392-4838 or through e-mail: [email protected] with any questions. Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Chaplain Bob Keller In Pursuit! Ministries Lighthouse Baptist Church

Dear Civil Servants:

We at Cornerstone Baptist Church are planning a special Sunday to honor those the men and women who are our guardians of life and property, first responders to our times of crisis, keepers of peace during stressful occasions, and providers for our public safety.

We call this special service to show support to our police, sheriffs, deputies and fire fighters. (The red is for the Fire Department, the blue for Law Enforcement and white is for our church as we stand with you in prayer.)

This day allows our church to honor and thank our "Servants" in our community; to motivate and challenge our people to pray for, support, and appreciate the men and women who dedicate their lives each day to protect and serve us. It is also a time for you to come and hear a message that will encourage and strengthen your hearts.

Sunday, April 27,2003 is the day set aside with Chaplain Tim Sherman, of In Pursuit! Ministries, as the speaker. We'd be honored to have you and your family worship with us. At 10 am. there will be a coffee and donut time; the special morning service will begin at 10:30 am. We hope to see you there!

Sincerely, A

Mr. & Mrs. Bob Keller 8877 Lauderdale Ct #2 1 1 -B Huntington Beach, CA 92646

Dear Mr. & Mrs. Keller,

We finally have a date for our Law Enforcement Appreciation Day (L.E.A.D.). We have been waiting all this time for C.L.A. to tell us whether David Gibbs would be available to be our speaker for the day. The bad news is that when they finalized their schedule David Gibbs was not available. The good news is that we have already scheduled him for next year and will have him in October of 2007.

Although we were not able to have David Gibbs for this year we did get Pastor John Vaughn from South Carolina to commit to come and speak for the day. He could not come in October and so the date will be November 5,2006. Instead of having both Sunday School and a morning service that day, we will have once combined service starting at 10:30 am. Please make note of this special day and help us as we begin to build towards it.

Any questions or suggestions you have in regards to this day should be directed to Pastor or to Bob Keller. We want this day to be the best L.E.A.D. we've had yet and with God's blessings and our diligent efforts I believe that it will be.

Thank you for your help and please keep this day in prayer.

In Christ,

Pastor Dunlop

On behalf of the men and women of the La Verne Police Department I want to extend niy most sincere gratitude to you and your congregation for the acts of kindness that your church bestowed upon the law enforcement community yesterday during your Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. It was very obvious that you and your congregation spent a lot of time and 1 worked really hard in preparing for this event. I truly enjoyed your special guest I speaker. Dr. John Vaughn and the message he shared as well as the

Dear Pastor Dunlop:

On behalf of the men and women of the Pomona Police Department I would like to extend my warmest thanks for the wonderful show of support that you and your fellowship demonstrated to those of us in law enforcement this past Sunday at your Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.

Not only were the officers that attended moved by the warmth and hospitality that was extended to them, but the pledge that your congregation took to raise your children to be law-abiding citizens, and respect law enforcement officers is something that I could only wish that more parents and community members would take to heart.

Many are quick to criticize the actions of law enforcement officers, as you and your guest speaker so aptly pointed out from the pulpit, but few take the time to simply say "thank you." The Lighthouse Baptist Church went far beyond a simple thank you; please pass on to your fellowship our gratitude for your heartfelt show of support.

The Hinds Pavilion is located off White Ave inside Gate #12 which is the gate just south of Arrow Hwy on White Ave. The pavilion is the building just inside and to the left of the gate as you enter. And, wow, not sure where to go other than the Chiefs office for whom to honor. What would be some criteria? I can think of a deserving officer, Barry Dolgovin who has worked with the youth of Pomona in a positive way for years through the local high schools in a mentoring program ...

Dear Corporal Garcia,

Thanks for the invitation! Yes, we will be there. Could you please tell us where the Hinds Pavilion is? Is it near where the awards luncheon was? We are now planning our annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Day on October 14th at Lighthouse Baptist Church. We are looking for an officer to honor that went above and beyond the call of duty. Do you have access to that information or could you steer us to those who do have that information? We had a great turn out for the LEAD Sunday last year and hope to have an even better turnout this year. If you have any suggestions on how we can improve or things we could do to make this day even better, we are open to hear it. We look forward to seeing you on the 1 lth. Lighthouse Baptist Church of La Verne

I want to thank you for the love you showed us during your Law I Enforcement Appreciation Day. We in Law Enforcement fight and win some battles each day, however, the only true victory over sin will be won with the blood of Jesus Christ. About 10 months ago I was promoted to the position of Lieutenant and with that, was assigned to work the weekend shift, which does not allow me to attend a church, so this Sunday was special for many reasons, as it was great to worship with brothers and sisters in Christ. Keep fighting the good fight and once again, thank you very much.

Regarding:

Third Annual FIRST RESPONDERS APPRECIATION DAY Sunday, September 9&

The tragic events of September 11, 2001, dramatically impacted all of us. Like you, I was deeply moved by the courageous spirit of self- sacrifice exhibited by the Fire Department of New York and the New York Police Department as they defied injury and death in their rush to rescue their fellow citizens following a horrific terrorist attack.

When I came to Sonoma County in 2003 to assume the pastorate of this great church, I was determined that we would honor the police officers and firefighters in the communities we serve. More than that, I have a burning desire to teach the children of our Church, and kids throughout the community, to respect and appreciate authority in general, but particularly authority figures in uniform.

In 2005, Bob Keller, chaplain for the Pomona Police Department and a fellow Baptist preacher, helped me initiate what I dubbed FIRST RESPONDERS APPRECIATION DAY. I scheduled it to coincide with September 11 so as to remind ourselves and our neighbors every year that our own local police officers and firefighters demonstrate daily the same courage and selflessness exhibited by their comrades at FDNY and NYPD, only on a smaller, more personal scale that touches us as individuals.

In 2005, our Church gave our visiting public servants some well-deserved recognition and a few small gifts. Last year, our people opened their hearts and their wallets to purchase gift cards I gift certificates to local establishments (such as Starbucks), to be given to our official guests. Each gift card was placed inside a greeting card in which the Church Member expressed hislher gratitude for the police officer or firefighter who would receive their present. Hundreds of dollars worth of gift cards 1 gift certificates were given to quite a number of local police officers and firefighters. I am asking our Church Members to do this again this year. I hope it will prove to be a true blessing to many of your personnel.

Our third annual FIRST RESPONDERS APPRECLATION DAY will occur on Sunday, September 9. The Service begins at 11:OO A.M. and will last approximately 90 minutes. The Service will include congregational singing of a few traditional hymns, a choir special, recognition of the police officers and firefighters who are present, an audio- visual presentation honoring fallen police officers, a prayer of blessing and protection upon our public servants, a Bible message (by me) meant to help and encourage those in public service, and a presentation of the gifts that our Members will provide for the officers and firefighters who honor us with their presence. I am confident that you and your personnel will find this Service to be a tremendous encouragement.

You are personally invited to attend. I am also asking your permission to provide your department with 8%'' x 11" posters of invitation to be posted at your station(s) to bring this event to the attention of the men and women under your command.

Thank you for protecting our lives, property, and most of all our freedom. Our liberties would be meaningless if you didn't provide us the protection we need to exercise them. We know that, and deeply appreciate you for it!

Dear Manager,

On November 5,2006 Lighthouse Baptist Church of La Verne will be having a Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, at which time we will be honoring the members of the law enforcement community. We will be presenting each officer with a variety of gifts. In addition to this, we would like to give them gift certificates to restaurants and stores. It will be a great help to us if you are able to participate. On our program we will acknowledge all donations and the businesses that contributed them. If you can supply us with a copy of your logo, we will include that as well. For tax purposes or your records, our tax ID number is: Federal ID# 95-3882092.

It is our hope to show community support for these men and women who hazard their lives to protect our streets. If you can participate, it will be a great help and encouragement to them. We are anticipating somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 ofljcers on this day. Gift certificates and gifts will be used only for law entbrcement personnel.

Thank you for your time and consideration of this request.

Enclosed you will find a complete portfolio on how to host your law enforcement appreciation service "Blue & White Sunday"" which is scheduled for October 10, 2004, with Chuck Baker as your speaker. This portfolio includes the following materials:

1. Outline for planning and suggested order of service 2. Sample advertisement posters 3. Letter of invitation 4. Greeting 5. Commendation certificate 6. Registration form 7. Sample Mayoral proclamation 8. Miscellaneous prayer plaques and frame-able certificates

Please follow the sixteen point outlirie very carefully. This will help to insure that this day will be attended by the departments and agencies you will be inviting. It is also important that you begin preparing sixty to ninety days in advance. "Blue & White Sunday'" is not limited to law enforcement only, but includes your local and state elected officials, judges, prosecutors, and anyone associated with the Criminal Justice System including your area jail and prison staff. Fire fighters can also be included.

If you plan this properly, your people should be very excited, just as they are on "Friend Day" and faith promise missions' month. The success of your day depends upon prayer and the excitement and anticipation of your church to see God's ministers of righteo~~sness born again, baptized, and added to the membership of your church.

PLEASE advise your keynote speaker at least thirty days in advance of the scheduled meeting what travel arrangements you have made (name of airline andflight schedule) as well as nanre and location of the hotel, unless other arrangements have been discussed The phone number of the hotel needs to be included so that the Administrative Office personnel will have this information on file.

Thank you so much for your consideration of "Blue 6; White Sunday"" and for allowing Fl2EEdon1 Flyer to present the glorious gospel to the men and women of your local law enforcement agencies. May God give us a blessed day where sinners are converted, their families come under the Lordship of Jesus Christ and they are added to your local assembly.

MORE TIPS: MAKING YOUR BLUE AND WHITE SUNDAY@

A SUCCESS 1. A Coordinator

Generally a Staff Member, to coordinate all aspects of "Blue and White Sundayo." T h ~ s is recommended because the Pastor has many other responsibilities and may be called fiom programs and planning of "Blue and White" due to emergencies.

2. Ribbon Committee

This group makes "Blue and White" ribbons at least two weeks prior to "Blue and White Sundayo", and puts them in the hands of the Church members at least one (perhaps two) weeks prior to the day of your "Blue and White Sundayo" event, to wear them. Thls will enable them to respond with an invitation for folks who ask why they are wearing the ribbon.

3 . Communications Committee

Thls group will write and mail letters, after being viewed by the Pastor, to Agency A h s t r a t o r s . (For example: Chef of Police, Sheriff, State Police Captains, Mayors, Councilmen, Federal Law Enforcement Agencies, Prison Officials, Constables, elected local, state, and federal officials, etc.) The first letter should go out six (6) weeks in advance, the second letter two (2) weeks in advance.

4. Teler~hone Committee

This group calls on the telephone seven (7) to ten (10) days prior to your "Blue and White Sundayo, but only after the second mailing has been sent.

5 . Promotion Committee

Thls group is me&a sensitive. They will consult all news me&a and press in the area for advertisement, as well as putting up posters in area stores, and in law enforcement agencies. (Example: roll call rooms, etc.) They will invite area media to the event to report the activities through television, radlo, and newspaper. They may need names of some of the dignitaries who have committed to come, t h s will serve as a prompter for the media to report the event.

6. Sign-ur, Committee

Thls group should give out "Blue and m t e " ribbons, and record on a quality Sign-In or Guest Book, the names and addresses of those who come as visitors and guests. Thls group may want to put a visitor name tag on those who come who are not in uniform, especially elected officials who need to be identified.

NOTE: Law enforcement ofjcers desire not to put their name, address, andphone number on visitors cards. Generally, their phone numbers are unlisted. The open will however put their address on a guest book. Usually the wzfe willfill this out. Their address needs to remain confidential, and they should only be contacted afrer the "Blue and White Sundaya by a staflmember, preferably the Pastor, with a staflmember.

7. The communications committee should follow up "Blue and White Sunday" with a "thank you" letter to all dignitaries and department heads, (Police Chef, Sheriff, etc.), signed by the Pastor.

8. Generally on "Blue and White Sunday's' a special gift is given to the officer and spouse, it is recommended, depending on the amount of officers present that t h s be done at the end of the services, to allow ample time for the speaker.

These are some of the suggestions we have received through our experience in doing "Blue and White Sunday's''. We hope these "tips" will be of help.

God, Give Us Men! Josiah Gilbert Holland

God, give us men! A time like this demands

Strong minds, great hearts, true faith and ready hands;

Men whom the lust of ofice does not kill;

Men whom the spoils of ofice cannot buy;

Men who possess opinions and a will;

Men who have honor; men who will not lie;

Men who can stand before a demagogue

And damn his treacherous flatteries without winking! Tall men, sun-crowned, who live above the fog

In public duty and in private thinking;

For while the rabble, with their thumb-worn creeds;

National Anthem verse 2

Oh! Thus be it ever, when free men shall stand Between their loved homes and the war's desolation!

Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.

Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."

And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Rock of Ages By Augustus Toplady

Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in Thee; Let the water and the blood, from Thy wounded side whch flowed,

Be of sin the double cure; save from wrath and make me pure.

Not the labor of my hands can hlfill Thy law's demands; Could my zeal no respite know, could my tears forever flow, All for sin could not atone; Thou must save, and Thou alone.

Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to the cross I cling; Naked, come to Thee for dress; helpless look to Thee for grace;

Foul, I to the fountain fly; wash me, Savior, or I die.

While I draw this fleeting breath, when mine eyes shall close in death, When I soar to worlds unknown, see Thee on Thy judgment throne,

Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in Thee.

Our heroes of yesterday have lost their luster.

Almost daily the headlines remind us how unwise it is to put our faith in sports legends, movie stars, politicians, or captains of industry. So where are the role models today for our sons and daughters?

\ We have a suggestion. There is a group of people we tend ' to take for granted. There is no special day set aside in

their honor that we kriow of, and no organized rial-ional recognition of their importance to every communit:y in the world -- big and small.

Without fanFare, they do their job. Sor-rie:imes putting their lives on the line in the process, There is much to

adrnire about these men and women --from part-timet~.ir'aI volur~teer to full-time big city professional, from trainee to Chief.

,..A I To even qualify for ths difficult and dernand~ng work, they have to bc phytically strong, ded~cated, ~ntell~gent resourceful, highly motivated, and, yes, unselfish. Because they're certainly not in it for the money.

At a time when many of us bernoari the lack of heroes, we suggest all of us look down the street to the rnen and wornen who protect you, your neiqhborhood, and your community from the cvpr-present dangers.

I hose rnodels for our kids! i hey've been there dll dong.

God bless the Public Salely Servants ol America!

About a half-dozen Los Bafios Police and California Highway Patrol officers de- scended on Lighthouse Baptist Church during the weekend, but it wasn't for a 9-1-1 call or even to render their services.

PAGE A2

Instead, church members in- vited the police over to express gratitude for their work. The officers were joined Sunday by three local firefighters and about 10 Los Bafios Police Vol- unteers for the church's fourth Blue and White Sunday.

The Rev. Ken Butler said the annual law enforcement and firefighter appreciation serv- ice is held to honor the lifesav- ing work performed by emer- gency workers.

"This is the church's fourth year doing th is because we

want these men and women to know that we care about them and we want to show them recognition," Butler said. "Of- tentimes, you'll get a very neg- ative attitude about them from the public and we want them to know that we love them and pray for them because they're a part of our community."

Butler said word of the serv- ice has been spreading through both church and community circles.

People too frequently heap barbs upon the men and women who earn their living behind a badge. But Grace Baptist Church set aside Sunday morning to reach out, shake these men's and women's hands and pat them on the back for a job well done.

The congregation welcomed roughly 35 police officers, their family and close friends to its eighth annual Blue and White Sunday service, honoring the men and women of law enforcement.

Jim Hollandsworth, a retired commander from the Chicago Police Department and now an Anderson resident, spoke for more than an hour during the Sunday service. His presen- tation included reliving "war stories," advice to the police officers in attendance and coun- seling others to be respectful of these officers who have a difficult job.

"You need Jesus Christ if you're in law enforcement today," Hollandsworth said. "I know what it's like. The minute you put that uniform on and step out on the street, you become a target."

Expanding on a quote the 13th chapter of Romans in the New Testament, Hol- landsworth challenged both the police officer

and the public to consider their Christian responsibilities in society.

"We as Christians are to be subject to our government. Government is ordained by God," he said, paraphrasing the Bible verse. 'That's why we as Christians should be sub- ject to our government."

Christians stopped by a police officer should show respect and not be abusive to the officers, Hollandsworth challenged, explaining these officers daily put their lives on the line for strangers.

To the police officers, Hollandsworth charged them to see their role in a Biblical perspective.

'This verse says we're ministers of God," he said, cautioning against abusing their author- ity and urging the officers to consider how they talk to the public. 'We in law enforce- ment must go the extra mile."

The cause of the violence in today's society, Hollandsworth said, is a turning away from God. He encouraged those in the congrega- tion - police officers and the public alike - to turn to God.

The church hosted the officers from six dif- ferent departments for a meal after the service.

With area officers being com- mended for putting an end last week to a nationwide manhunt for two teen-age fugitives, the timing of this year's law enforcement appreciation service at an Ander- son church couldn't have been more appropriate.

Dozens of officers - most in full uniform -joined the congregation at Grace Baptist Church for its ninth annual "Blue and White Sunday" service. The event, which generally falls on the last Sunday in February, aims to recognize law enforcement officials for their lofty contribution to society.

The special guest was Henry County Sheriffs Deputy Bill Ward, whose vigilance last Mon- day led to the apprehension of two teen-a~ed bovs sus~ected in

mouth professors. During the service, Pastor Leigh

Crockett praised the deputy for his diligence. As a token of apprecia- tion, Ward was presented a Bible, which prompted a hearty applause from the congregation.

"Bill Ward, as many of you know, has been in the news a lot lately," Crockett said. 'We want to congratulate you and thank you for being with us today."

After the service, Ward, while being barraged by admirers and the media, humbly said he was both thankful and honored, espe- cially considering positive police work rarely gets spotlighted these days.

"It's a relief to see someone rec- ognizing that good things are hap- pening," he said.

Indeed, that is the heart of "Blue and White Sunday."

Let every person be subject to the governing authorities.

For there is no authority except from God,

Those that exist have been instituted by God.

Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed,

Those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad.

Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority?

Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval. For he is God's servant for your good.

But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain.

For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer.

Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God's wrath, but also for the sake of conscience.

For the same reason you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing.

Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed,

Respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.

Page 134: Info on Law Enforcement Appr Sundays

Out of profound appreciation for your dedicated and daily selfless public service,

And recognizing that you are a bestowal of divine blessing on us in times of crisis and in securing our public safety and civic well being,

And seeing in your personal and courageous sacrifices the very best in humanity and a reflection of the divine nature,

We express to you our deepest and most sincere gratitude, appreciation and support.

Welcome and Recognition of Law Enforcement Officers

We would like to honor our law enforcement officers and their families today. Our law enforcement officials are belittled, made fun of, and disrespected by many segments of our society. They are not pigs or cops o r some other derogatory term, they are our policeman, deputies, patrolman, state troopers, marshals special agents, and correctional officers, they are our judges and attorneys, they are our parole officers and probation officers. They are the front line of defense from those who would take from us life, and liberty. They are the front line who deal with the ugliness of our society daily. Their families have given much, as their spouse, father or mother, son or daughter is on the front line risking their life and physical well being. Sacrificing in times of emergency and crisis.

Our law enforcement officers deserve not our pity but our respect and support. They are maligned by stereotypes developed by those who seek to undermine their effectiveness. The stress that they experience is uncommon, in our country one officer looses his life in the line of duty every 36 hours, law enforcement officers have some of the higher rates of stress related diseases among professionals in the nation.

They are on the front lines, and they are not just law enforcement officers, but our law officers are Ministers of God to us for good, Rom. 13. As ministers of God, we now stand to show respect to them, and honor them, and commit ourselves to pray for them and for their families. We stand today to say that we appreciate the sacrifices that you and your family makes. May God Bless You and Your Family.

You are men and women of uncommon valour.
