The student will learn and apply mycobacterial killing assays to samples from in vivo model systems following trials of a new TB vaccine developed in Oxford. This will be done to look for possible correlates of protection against TB. This project unites the specialist skills of Dr Helen McShane and her team at the University of Oxford (vaccinology, immunology, human clinical trials) with the expertise of Dr Sally Sharpe and her team at the Health Protection Agency (in vivo models, immunology, containment level 3) to present a rare PhD training package. The training environment in Oxford provides exposure to high-quality science in an intellectually stimulating and active research team, with the opportunities to mix with other trainees and post-doctoral researchers working on related topics. Both the University of Oxford and the Centre for Emergency Preparedness and Response provide a wide range of courses in generic and transferable research skills for the benefit of post-graduate students. The project supervisors are Dr McShane and Dr Sharpe. This studentship is jointly funded by the University of Oxford and the HPA. It will commence in October 2008 and is for a period of three years. Candidates must be European Union nationals. Funding includes an allowance to attend one international conference during the tenure of the studentship. The successful applicant will be asked to submit an application for graduate studies to the University for the 25th July deadline. Details for graduate student application and selection criteria can be found at http://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/postgraduate/apply/ More information on the Jenner Institute can be found at http://www.jenner.ac.uk/index.html and on the Health Protection Agency at http://www.hpa.org.uk To apply please send a curriculum vitae with the names of two referees to nathanial.brittain@ndm. ox.ac.ukby Friday 11 July 2008. DPhil StudentshipEvaluation of TB Immunity following TB vaccinationJenner Institute, University of Oxford Centre for Emergency Preparedness and Response, Health Protection AgencyApplications are invited for a DPhil project on the evaluation of the hypothesis that immune-mediated inhibition of mycobacterial growth correlates with protection against TB challenge.

Both the University of Oxford and the Centre for Emergency Preparedness and Response provide a wide range of courses in generic and transferable research skills for the benefi t of post-graduate students.

Details for graduate student application and selection criteria can be found at http://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/postgraduate/apply/ More information on the Jenner Institute can be found at http://www.jenner.ac.uk/index.html and on the Health Protection Agency at http://www.hpa.org.uk

To apply please send a curriculum vitae with the names of two referees to [email protected] by Friday 11 July 2008. Your letter should explain your interest in and relevant experience for this position. The interviews will be held on the afternoon of Thursday 10th July 2008.
