Tortola

Road Town is the capital of the British Virgin Islands on the main island of

Tortola. Centered in the large protected horseshoe shaped Road Bay, the town

is the hub of busy island life and the main port of debarkation for visiting cruise

ships.

Soper’s Hole Soper's Hole Marina is located on Frenchman's Cay at the west end of Tortola. It is

one of the most attractive marinas in the BVI and the harbor is popular with tourists

as well as visiting yachts. Frenchman's Cay is joined to the main island of Tortola

by a sand bar and small bridge.

Moskito was named after the Moskito Indians who lived there

before the 14th Century, but is often referred to as Mosquito

Island. This small jewel is 124 acres is mostly abandoned (2006)

and the resort of Drake's Anchorage that was once popular in the

Peter Island

Peter Island has an interesting folklore history where the famous pirate Blackbeard

supposedly abandoned some of his crew to their death on Dead Chest Island. The

men were washed up in Deadman's Bay which is now the main resort beach. The

neighboring Norman Island was the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's

"Treasure Island".

Wreck of the Rhone

On October 29, 1867, the 310' Royal Mail Steamship, "Rhone" had just

arrived at Peter Island and was anchored off Dead Man's Bay when a

hurricane descended upon her. Their anchor dragged and broke free from its

holding. Before the captain and crew could take control of the ship, she

foundered off Lee Bay at Salt Island.

The Caribbean Leeward Islands are so named due to the prevailing

winds blowing north and they consist of Anguilla, Antigua and

Barbuda, the British and United States Virgin Islands, the

Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and

Nevis, Saba, Saint Martin and Saint Barts.

The Caribbean Windward Islands are so named due to being on

the windier and wetter side of the Lesser Antilles and consist of

Martinique, Saint Lucia, Barbados, Saint Vincent and the

Grenadines, Grenada Trinidad and Tobago. Together all the

islands make up the group of Caribbean islands known as the

Lesser Antilles.
