Recommended movie of the monthThe Sapphires

Words by Susannah Malyon

Based on real events, The Sapphires tells the story of the McCrae sisters; talented singers plucked from an Aboriginal mission in rural Victoria and offered the gig of a lifetime, entertaining the troops in Vietnam.

First-time feature director Wayne Blair adapted the story from a theatre production by the same name, written by Tony Briggs. Briggs’ mother, who travelled to Saigon with her sisters and cousins in the late ‘60s to sing for the troops, was the inspiration behind the story. She couldn’t believe that the film was premiering at Cannes – after apparently mishearing that it was opening in Cairns. But the dazzling cast who brought the story to life looked right at home on the world-famous red carpet. The four sisters, played by well-known actress Deborah Mailman, Australian Idol runner-up Jessica Mauboy, and newcomers Miranda Tapsell and Shari Sebbens, sparkled for the cameras. Together on screen and off, they make an impressive ensemble.

While the film’s director freely admits much of the dramatic action and romance that takes place onscreen was the product of artistic license, he insists the core of the story remains true to life. In fact, The Sapphires’ willingness to present the history of the time so honestly is something that has won the film much praise.

The film doesn’t shy away from the era’s history. All the social, political, racial and sexual upheaval of 1960s, both internationally and within Australia –

where Aboriginal people were fighting for basic rights – aren’t just there as backdrop. They’re part of the characters’ lives and essential to the story. Like so many artists of the time, the sisters face adversity with music and through music.

The soundtrack, full of familiar soul classics and brilliant performances, is what really lifts the film. Historical context gives us a sense of the appreciation troops must have felt for such diversions as touring girl groups. It wasn’t just entertainment for entertainment’s sake, but music for the soul, and ultimately survival.

There’s plenty of comic relief in the film too with Chris O’Dowd, known for his roles in recent comedy blockbusters, Bridesmaids (2011), Friends With Kids (2012) and TV series The IT Crowd, who plays a very likable Irish lout and talent scout with a fondness for the bottle. A natural clown, the affable O’Dowd was also a great source of comic relief during the filming process, according to cast.

Though it didn’t win the Palme d’Or at Cannes, The Sapphires brought the palms of critics and audiences together in a standing ovation that resonated long after the final credits finished rolling. This is one Australian film gem not be missed – available now on board with Jetstar.

With all the flashy gowns, stars and light bulbs that dominated the red carpet at the Cannes International Film Festival, no-one would have thought a little Aussie film could steal the limelight. But The Sapphires (2012) turned out to be an unexpected jewel in the crown at the world’s most prestigious film festival.

Recommended album of the monthMissy Higgins – The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle

Words by Jess Macnaught & Bayden Hine

As far as Australian singer-songwriters go, Missy Higgins is at the top of her game. Originally discovered by Triple J way back in 2004, the journey that followed saw Higgins launch her stellar songwriting career and perform across the globe.

She returns now in 2012 after a five-year hiatus with her brand new album, The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle. After declaring she was quitting music in 2007, the album’s title could be construed as being a sort of declaration – a heralding of her return to the music industry after battling through depression, the pressure of having to deliver fresh material, fame, as well as a severe case of writer’s block. Here, she has created an earnest, fresh and cut-to-the-bone record that truly delivers in the way that only songwriters like Missy Higgins can.

Collaborating with American producers Brad Jones and Butterfly Boucher, Higgins has created an album heavily steeped in carefully constructed emotional lyrical hooks. However her writing doesn’t reflect the regular pains of love like that from her previous two albums. Instead, The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle’s main subject material is music itself. The album’s opening track ‘Set Me On Fire’ is a melodious ode-to-music, “Melody, you’re the one who saves me,” while going on to close with the track ‘Sweet Arms Of A Tune,’ describing the sanctuary music has to offer when all else seems to fail around you.

Produced in Nashville, the experimental album has a definite country influence, blended with blues, pop – and even disco – with an overall matured sound. Many of the songs have also been co-written with writers including film director Amiel Courtin-Wilson and Dan Wilson who was the co-author of well-known UK artist Adele’s heart-felt track ‘Someone Like You.’

With three number one albums now under her belt, it is no surprise that Missy Higgins should return with an album that is so wonderful – especially one that appears effortlessly so. After an incredibly long and difficult journey, she has produced a carefully balanced work of well-produced pop, with just the right amount of personal reflection that she is renowned for.

It’s been worth the wait – Missy Higgins’ latest release, The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle, is the album that almost didn’t exist. Here, she takes us on a journey exploring the depths of her re-connection with music and personal documentary of the past few years.

Penguin eBooksWords by Sophie Leahy

Well-known and adored writer Zoë Foster is largely recognised for her unsurpassable knowledge of make-up, skin care and hair trickery. Having already garnered a horde of loyal followers with her distinctly warm and witty style of writing, Zoë has branched out into writing easily-digestible and entertaining novels, with The Younger Man her fourth offering so far.

Clever and cheeky, Zoë’s trademark sparkle jumps off every page. She tells the story of super successful 33-year-old Abby who, against her better judgement, begins to fall for 22-year-old Marcus. This bitingly funny story cleverly displays Abby’s inner torment as she is forced to choose between her head and her heart. More than just a ‘chick-lit’ fluff piece, this is not a novel that will instantly isolate anyone of the male persuasion. Each of the supporting characters are generously developed, creating an intimate vibe that draws readers in. Abby’s two best friends are each going through their own personal problems, sifting through dilemmas that people face as an everyday reality, while young Marcus is devastatingly charming throughout.

For a different style of read, there are plenty of other options. From Penguin’s digital series of short works Penguin Specials, you’ll discover Beauty’s Sister by James Bradley a story driven by jealousy, passion and power, which is a dark retelling of the fable Rapunzel, and glimpse into the souls of some of Australia’s famous females, including Ita Buttrose and Helen Garner in Six Women of Letters curated by Marieke Hardy and Michaela McGuire. Also on offer is Fiona Palmer’s latest book The Road Home, which looks at the often-difficult struggle of trying to find your true place in the world.

The young at heart can travel back in time to 1918 to meet Alice a little girl with a wish to become a ballerina. Meet Alice by Davina Bell and Lucia Masciullo is part of the much-loved Our Australian Girl series. If you loved Seven Little Australians then Our Australian Girl is for you. Thrill seekers can get swept up in the adventure and excitement of Felice Arena’s Andy Roid and the Superhuman Secret.
