Humpty DumptyAim To teach a seated entry and learn to return to the pool edge,

1. Children sit in a line along the pool edge with carers in the water facing them.

2. Carers hold child’s hands and everybody sings:‘Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall,Humpty Dumpty had a great fall, (child enters water with assistance)All the king’s horses and all the king’s men,Couldn’t put Humpty together again’ (child is turned towards pool edge to return to safety and encouraged to hold on)

Variation: As child becomes more confident and able, a step-in entry can be used.

Formation Sitting in a line on the edge of the pool

1. Children sit in a line along the pool edge with carers in the water facing them.

2. Everybody sings:‘Ten green frogs sitting on the wall,Ten green frogs sitting on the wall,And if one green frog accidently falls, (with assistance child slides into the water and holds onto the pool edge)There are nine green frogs sitting on the wall….’ (Eight, seven, six etc.)

Five little speckled frogsAim To encourage an independent jump in entry and return to

1. Children stand in a line along the pool edge with carers in the water facing them

2. Initially the carers assist the children to enter the water on cue and then aim towards independent entry into the pool, returning to the pool edge and safely exit.

3. Everybody sings‘Five little speckled frogs, sittin’ on a speckled log eating a most delicios fly,Yum, yum, yum, yum.One jumped into the pool, where it was nice and cool’(Child enters the water with carers assistance).Then there were four little speckled frogs…. (Then three, two, one)

Teddy bear, teddy bearAim To encourage an independent jump in entry and return to

2. Initially carers guide the children to do the actions to their words and hold their hands when entering the water.

3. Aim towards independent entry into the pool, returning to the pool edge and safely exit.

4. Everybody sings‘Teddy bear, teddy bear turn around (child to turn around 360°)Teddy bear, teddy bear, touch the ground (child touches the ground)Teddy bear, teddy bear stand up tall (child to stand tall with their arms up)Teddy bear, teddy bear jump off the wall’ (child enters the wall with carers assistance)

1. Carer to stand in water at poolside, holding child facing pool edge.

2. Carer assists child to move hands along pool edge like a climbing monkey – to the right and then to the left. Everybody sings:

‘Climbing monkeys, Climbing monkeys, Climbing along the wallClimbing monkeys, Climbing monkeys, trying not to fall.

Equipment Watering can or small bucket with holes drilled in the bottom

Instructions/Lyrics

1. Carer to stand in a circle holding the child in front of them, facing the instructor.

2. Instructor moves around the circle and showers each child with water using a watering can or small bucket with holes.

3. Everyone sings:‘It’s raining, its pouring,The old man is snoring,He went to bed and bumped his head and couldn’t get up in the morning.’

Breathing Ring a ring a RosieAim To initially encourage blowing bubbles and develop

confidence in submersion

1. Carer to stand in a circle holding the child under the arms in front of them, facing the instructor. Everyone sings:

We all blow bubbles’ (carer and child blow bubbles)

‘The cows in the meadow,

Eating buttercup,

A-tishoo, A-tishoo, We all jump up’ (carer holds up child in the air)

Variation: As children become more confident, ‘we all blow bubbles’ changes to ‘we all fall down’ and the carer gently submerges the child.

Blow out your birthday candlesAim To gain confidence in exhaling air and making surface

bubbles.

1. Carer holds child on their hip and lowers body in the water, so the child’s face is close to the water surface.

2. Carer holds up fingers to simulate birthday candles (can hold up the number of fingers for the age of the child.

3. Child attempts to blow out their birthday candles and carer puts each finger down once they have been blown out.

1. Children sit on the flotation mat facing their carer who is in the water on the side of the mat.2. One at a time (as the song counts down) children enter the water and glide underwater to their carer3. Everyone sings:

<insert number> little monkeys jumpin’ on the bed, one fell off and bumped his head (one child enters the water)Mama called the water and the doctor said ‘No more monkeys jumpin on the bed!<insert number – one less> little monkeys jumpin’ on the bed, one fell off and bumped his head (one child enters the water)‘…. 1. Children lie down on the flotation mat on their backs with carers standing around the sides of the mat

2. On cue, one carer assists the child to roll over and off the mat into the carers arms.

3. Everyone sings:There were <insert number> in the bed and the little one said,Roll over, roll over, and they al rolled over and one fell out’ (children all roll over and one child rolls off the mat).There were <insert number – one less>…. There were three… There were two… There was one…. There was none in the bed’

Lyrics

1. Carers hold children in a back float shoulder, chest or extended arm position

2. On cue ‘up jumped the scarecrow’ the carers rotate the children to an upright position

3. Carer aids the child in each of the actions to the song until the child can perform them individually

4. Everyone sings:‘When all the cows are sleeping and the sun has gone to bed,Up jumped the scarecrow and this is what he said, (rotate the child to upright position)I’m a dingle dangle scarecrow with a flippy floppy hatI can splash my hands like this and kick my feet like that’.

‘When all the hens are rousting and the moons behind the cloud, up jumped the scarecrow and shouted very loud. I’m a dingle dangle scarecrow with a flippy floppy hatI can paddle my arms like this and blow my bubbles like that’

3. As children are able to kick independently, encourage them to kick at the pace of the words

4. Everyone sings:‘Motorboat, motorboat go so slow (move slowly around the circle)Motorboat, motorboat go so fast (move faster around the circle)Motorboat, motorboat step on the gas (move around in a circle at full pace)Vroom!’

paddle and kick away from the circle4. One duck (child) stays away while the other ducks
