Participants will gain experience reading VFSS for anatomy and physiology of normal and abnormal swallowing in infants and children. To gain experience diagnosing via the VFSS participants will view a range of ages of pediatric patients who present various swallowing problems with primary airway and neurologic-based swallowing and feeding deficits. Participants will learn to incorporate these VFSS findings as “one piece of the puzzle” when making management and therapeutic intervention recommendations. Evidence-based treatments, neurodevelopmental status, and physiologic knowledge will be discussed as critical factors in management decision making. Treatment planning topics will include considerations for children with tracheostomy and ventilator dependency. Facilitation of nipple feeding, texture changes, postural adjustments, oral sensorimotor factors, electrical stimulation, and ways to include non-nutritive “tastes” when risks for aspiration appear high will be demonstrated and discussed in a case-rounds format. Upon completion of this seminar, the participant will: 1. Identify oropharyngeal anatomy in infants and children from videofluoroscopic swallow studies. 2. Identify physiologic and anatomic swallowing disorders in infants and children. 3. Define potential interventions to be assessed during VFSS of infants and children to include postural changes, texture changes, and oral sensorimotor strategies. 4. Develop intervention plans following the VFSS to address airway and neurologic problems. 5. Use recent research in swallowing disorders in the management of pediatric patients. She is on the faculty at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and she is also a member of the medical staff at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City, where she specializes in feeding and swallowing disorders in pediatric patients. She is founder of the Little Tykes with Trachs Program and has maintained a 17-year clinical practice treating tracheostomized children and adults to optimize their health-related quality of life. DESCRIPTION

Two internationally recognized clinicians and researchers in the area of pediatric feeding and swallowing disorders will present this 2-day seminar.

Upon completion of this seminar, the participant will:

TWO EXCELLENT STUDY GUIDES TO IMPROVE YOUR ABILITY TO DIAGNOSE AND PLAN

TREATMENT FOR OROPHARYNGEAL DYSPHAGIA THROUGH VIDEOFLUOROSCOPY

Adult Resource: Interpretation of Videofluoroscopic Swallow Studies of Adults: A Study Guide To Improve Diagnostic Skills and Treatment Planning.

Pediatric Resource: Interpretation of Videofluoroscopic Swallow Studies of Infants and Children: A Study Guide To Improve Diagnostic Skills and Treatment Planning.

Drs. Arvedson and Abraham will enthusiastically share their knowledge on this topic allowing you to be more comfortable and

confident in treating this specialized population.

Program Contents:Each study guide includes a DVD containing 25 videofluoroscopic swallow studies of various swallow disorders. The accompanying manual discusses each swallow study, including the rationale for the diagnosis and treatment planning recommendations. A formal written report is also included for each swallow study.

What These Study Guides Can Do For You:

n Master the skill of interpreting swallow x-ray studies.

n Perfect your ability to link symptoms of dysphagia with specific swallowing disorders. n Distinguish yourself from clinicians who plan treatment programs based only on signs and symptoms of dysphagia rather than on swallow physiology and on effects of treatment introduced in x-ray.

n Improve patient outcomes and patient satisfaction through more accurate diagnostic techniques.

n Experience more personal satisfaction through better treatment outcomes.

n Gain confidence when interacting with physicians.

n Improve report-writing skills.

“Presenters have lots of experience & a

wealth of knowledge!”
