Fr. Jack
From the Desk of Fr. Jack Trinity Sunday
Last week with the Feast of Pentecost we ended the Easter Season, or as it is also called the Great Fifty Days. Today and next Sunday we mark what have been called Doctrinal Feasts with the celebrations of Trinity Sunday today and the feast of the Body and Blood of Jesus. By
the end of this month our Sundays will mark Ordinary Time until the Feast of Christ the King. During the Sundays of Ordinary Time, the Evangelist Luke will be our guide through his Gospel Narrative.
But to refer to this Sunday and next Sunday as doctrinal feasts does not do them justice. Take today, the doctrine of the Trinity is not just an article of faith. It is something more. When we speak of God, we find ourselves in the presence of a profound mystery. We are grateful to Jesus, the Son of God become human, who by his words and actions revealed the God who is not only his Father, the Creator of heaven and earth, but also the God who is
The Spirit, the Lord and Giver of life. This day celebrates the God who is Farther, Son and holy Spirit. Jesus provides insight into the inner life of God; and how our God relates to us.
A help for me in approaching this great mystery of faith is a book that Father Andrew Greeley wrote over forty years ago. The title is May the Wind Be At Your Back. The book contains nine meditations on the prayer of St. Patrick. This prayer is also known as the “Cry of the Deep.” I will only draw attentions to the First Meditation and its opening verse:
I arise to-day
Through a mighty strength, the invocation of Trinity.
Through a belief in the Threeness,
Through confession of the oneness
Of the Creator of Creations
Fr. Greeley speaks of the beginning of his day as he invokes the Trinity by the Sign of the Cross. He could speak more of this mystery of God now than what he wrote on the pages his book as he has passed away a few years ago. A the Church attempted to formulate its faith in the three Persons in One God, people rioted in the streets, royalty put their two cents in over how to express this mystery of faith; and Christendom was split between the West and the East over whether the Holy Spirit proceeded from both the Father and the Son.
As was the custom of Fr. Greeley to invoke the Triune God to begin his day, so also with St. Patrick. Patrick arose to face whatever came his way with that same invocation and sign of the Cross wit the power of this God not only to begin the day, but to work through his days reinforced by the power of God’s name.
There is a lesson for us to do the same, as we begin our day and move through our days reinforced by the God who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Together let us praise the name of God!
