INDUSTRIAL SWITCHGEAR & AUTOMATION SPECIALISTS

NEW PLUS RANGENHP-Grässlin PLUS series time switches are an easy way of providing quality and reliable time control for electrical circuits.

The new generation PLUS series is now available in the TALENTO digital and TACTIC Universal digital ranges. These new ranges introduce many new features as well as providing advanced technology and ease of use. The PLUS series reliable and accurate performance is what we have come to expect in German manufactured excellence.

Easy to use programming is one of the many features of the new series, with self explanatory menus structured in an easy to follow logical format, allowing simple programming by anyone. All this coupled with the ‘Energy Conservative’ features of this product makes it the optimal choice for your timing control requirements.

TALENTO PLUS DIGITAL RANGEThe Talento PLUS is the premier digital range on the market and with LCD screens and text type programming, the PLUS series has many great new features.

Operations can be programmed for daily, weekly or in the more advanced models, annual operation. This allows greater flexibility across the model range allowing certain applications to be suited to a particular model, making the choice of component more economical to the end user.

The new larger programming screens with three lines of display allow for easy programming as well as providing the added advantage of multiple language settings - it’s as easy to program as a mobile phone!

With up to 50 memory spaces in the standard model and up to 800 memory spaces in the more advanced versions, the Talento PLUS range allows for an extensive amount of functions to be executed by such a small timer.

Further new features include a battery backup power reserve which can last for up to three years as well as a non-volatile EEPROM memory which allows programs to be maintained for a considerable amount of time after suffering a power failure, ensuring maintenance free operation, saving you on costs and time.

With an automatic daylight savings operation feature, the PLUS series can have a daylight savings program easily set depending on which Country or State you are in. Alternatively, daylight savings operations can easily be switched off, allowing for maintenance free operation throughout the year.

There is also an override operation that is easily activated by the manual FIX ON / FIX OFF feature which allows easy access for the operator in case of an unscheduled operation. The normal program is temporarily overridden when this occurs and then falls back to normal operation when desired.

EXTENDED FEATURESSo what else can the new Talento PLUS range provide the user? Optional communication devices that carry infrared optical signals called ‘IR optical wave guides’ can be simply plugged into the front of each device, allowing signals to be sent to adjacent time clock modules, ensuring synchronised operation and exact timing. Another optional feature is the use of a GPS module that can allow a time signal to be sent to the device located anywhere in the world, ensuring correct time settings.

LAN (Local Area Network) modules are also available for the more advanced models, an option designed to allow for a device to be accessed over the internet as well as allowing time switch changes to be executed from any PC anywhere in the world.

The hand held programmer ‘Taxxi’ device used on the more advanced Talento PLUS versions allows programs to be written on a PC and uploaded into the hand held device, and then transferred via infrared signal to the desired unit for programming. This allows a program to be written on our Talento PLUS software, which can then be delivered to multiple time clocks out in the field through the simple press of a button.

‘ASTRO’The new ‘ASTRO’ feature on the 791 PLUS model is an innovative technology that allows accurate switching at dawn and dusk everyday anywhere in the world. The device only requires the latitude and longitude position to be entered in as well as the exact time zone based on the number of hours from GMT. It then automatically calculates the exact switching time of each day.

The Energy Conservation feature of this technology will eliminate lighting being operated during daylight times and is controlled day in day out, all year round. This device is especially useful in public infrastructure and security lighting areas.

TACTIC PLUS UNIVERSAL RANGEUser friendly operation was in mind when the new Tactic PLUS range was designed, particularly for panel mount or surface mount applications, as well as accommodating universal Din rail mounting. With battery backup of up to three years and daily or weekly operation, the Tactic PLUS series is designed for multiple applications.

Other features include modular design so the time piece can be easily removed from the terminal section of the base, allowing for a quick change out or a reprogramming of the device. Clear covers are also available to protect the front of the device.

NHP races for charityNHP recently participated in the 2008 Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron Charity Regatta on a day that raised $40,000 for both the Cure Kids Charity and the RNZYS’s youth events.

The NHP yacht of choice was the 40 foot “BMW Yachtsport”, with the crew consisting of NHP’s New Zealand Manager Craig Vallance, NHP Sales Engineers Robert Todd and Brian Hemingway, and eight VIP customers. Showing definite potential for winning first place, she was eager, and if she could have filled her sails with all the optimism and energy of those onboard, she would have performed accordingly. But with an eight knot wind behind her, it was never going to happen.

NHP did, however, manage to take out the coveted “best dressed” award.

The food and wine flowed late into the evening and a silent auction was held, which helped raise the $40,000 for both the Cure Kids Charity and The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron (RNZYS). Cure Kids is the face of the Child Health Research Foundation – an organisation established to address the lack of research into life-threatening childhood illnesses in New Zealand. The money raised for The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron will go towards the squadron’s youth events.

Guest speakers included Grant Dalton – Managing Director of Emirates Team New Zealand, and Rob Hammill, also known as “Mr. Atlantic”, who is not only a former world silver medallist in rowing pairs, but together with Phil Stubbs, was the winner of the trans-Atlantic crossing in 1997.

40 year anniversary provides us with a springboard into the future

In 1968, our Founder, Nigel Peck, was determined to create a 100% Australian-owned company, focused on providing the best service and highest level of quality products in a market dominated by multi internationals.

We began with 15 dedicated employees and two small branches, one in the Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn and the other in Sussex Street Sydney. This year we have recently opened our 18th branch in Albury / Wodonga, Victoria and have the best Manufacturing and Warehousing facilities in the business.

Today, NHP is still a 100% Australian-owned company and with our core values of passion for customers, consistency, integrity, commitment to performance, energy and adaptiveness to change, we not only offer the Australian & New Zealand Electrical Industry the reliability of 40 years experience, but bring the best of the Industrial Electrical world to Australasia by providing the very best technical support, services, customer focused systems and solutions.

NHP offers systems which “value add” to products in a way that makes them ‘Fit for Purpose’. We incorporate the world’s best and most extensive range of low voltage products into customer focused application solutions. Our Warehouse, Distribution and Manufacturing facility located in Melbourne’s industrial precinct of Laverton, is supported by impressive inventory management technologies and “state of the art” warehousing, despatching hundreds of units for delivery throughout Australia and New Zealand. It is home to many project and manufacturing groups that include Panel Boards, Motor Control (incorporating Variable Speed Drives), Motor Starters, Power Factor Correction units, Air Circuit Breakers, High Current Chassis’, Liquid Resistance Starters as well as the Stahl Certified Centre of Excellence, the Fibox milling and drilling equipment, the NHP test room and much more.

While we reflect on the past 40 years, we also look forward to the endless opportunities available within the Electrical Industry. Automation is certainly the essence of modern industrial success and NHP will continue to be at the forefront of this field. Automation technology underpins the essential features of any successful industrial enterprise: minimised labour and energy costs, optimised production throughput, production flexibility and maximised uptime. Seamless connectivity, scalability and ease of configuration and maintenance are the important features of any premium Automation technology system. We offer the world’s best Automation technologies hand-picked for their ability to meet these important criteria.

The environmental debate continues to gain momentum in mainstream society and in the Electrical Engineering Industry, so much so that being “green” has migrated from social consciousness into “day-to-day” engineering disciplines. Green levies, tighter operating margins and profits are a few economic drivers forcing building owners, facility managers and property developers to use more intelligent integrated Energy Management Control Systems (EMCSs). NHP is a major supplier of intelligent integrated EMCSs and can supply products that can be configured to suit any building, with a recent project example being Westpac Place in Sydney. The key concept to accomplish any analysis of the electrical network is the use of instruments able to measure and record the main electrical parameters defining the “behaviour” of each network.

In closing, “what you want, where, when and how you want it” is still our customer promise and the number one driver for our business. We are firmly focused on being the foremost “market maker” and “market server” in the Australasian Industrial Electrical field.

In 2008, together with our leading Supply Partner organisations, we celebrate 40 strong years and are proud to celebrate this milestone with our customers. However, while 40 years is a great accomplishment, using a cricket analogy “a batsman does not raise his bat when reaching 40 runs”, therefore we thank everyone who has supported us over the past 40 years and with much enthusiasm we look forward to working together in the future.

ISSUE #6 OCTOBER 2008

NHP drives the Goldfield SuperpipeNHP, in conjunction with Central Highlands Water, has seen water return to drought ravaged Ballarat in central Victoria with the completion of the Goldfields Superpipe.

The 87 kilometre pipeline connects the region to the Goulburn system by delivering water from Sandhurst Reservoir in Bendigo to White Swan Reservoir in Ballarat.

The $180 million project, which was originally planned for completion in 2010, was fast tracked to June 2008 due to the intensity of the ongoing drought many are suffering in central Victoria. The Superpipe project was completed and operational in May, six weeks ahead of schedule and only ten months after construction commenced, and will now help provide a secure water supply for 97, 000 residents in the Ballarat region.

A month after the State Government announced the construction of the Goldfields Superpipe, Central Highlands Water engaged Earth Tech Engineering to design and manage the construction of the pipeline. NHP won the contract to supply Variable Speed Drives and other related switchgear, and working with contractor Watters Electrical and supplier DW Control, the project got underway.

Central to the project were the three pump stations: the Midland Pump Station, the Sandhurst Pump Station and the Yandoit Pump Station. NHP, working with Watters Electrical, supplied three Santerno Variable Speed Drives which were a combination of the S60 frame (400kW) and S65 (450kW and 630kW) frame size Sinus Penta’s, the most impressive and imposing of the Santerno range. A total of nine Variable Speed Drive cabinets were built for the project - three 400kW, three 450kW and three 560kW’s.

“The 450kW and 630kW Variable Speed Drives are modular style units made up of four separate modules,” says Geoff Thorp, NHP’s Product Manager – VSDs. “The first is the power supply module which contains the input rectifier circuitry and the remaining three modules contain the output IGBT power sections which produce the variable voltage, variable frequency output which drives the motor. One of the output modules contains the main microprocessor and the user I/O connections.

“Each module communicates via fibre optic connections which provide lightning fast communication speeds between the modules. The fibre optic connections ensure that the onboard microprocessor can access real time information from each of the output phases of the VSD with extremely fast response times ensuring the VSD operates continually at peak efficiency.

“The advantage of modular style drives is that they allow for easy installation as well as simple spare parts management for the end user as the modules are interchangeable with each other.”

The project’s completion ahead of schedule was made possible thanks to NHP’s strong working relationship with Watters Electrical and DW Controls. “We have had an ongoing relationship with NHP for many years, so we were more than happy to deal with NHP on these drives,” says Phil Blake, Project Engineer from Watters Electrical. “Central Highlands Water had a preference to use these drives and from past dealings with NHP we knew that we would get the sort of commercial and technical responses that we would demand for such a high profile project.

“From an electrical perspective, the kW rating of these VSDs is at the high end for LV drives and are not commonly used models in this type of project. In addition to the original scope of supply, individual harmonic filters were included. Therefore, the physical arrangements and actual wiring requirements were unique and had to be developed from scratch. We worked closely with NHP and DW Controls, who built the boards, to come up with a final arrangement that suited the application and client requirements.”

In addition to the Variable Speed Drives, a range of other NHP equipment was used in the construction of the Superpipe drive cabinets. NHP supplied products that made up 80% of the control gear in the pump stations, which included CA5 Sprecher and Schuh contactors, relays and D7 indicator lights/switches, Terasaki TemBreak 2 circuit breakers and Terasaki ACBs, IME power meters and Cosmotec roof fans and door grills.

Andrew Barnett, Maintenance Supervisor at Central Highlands Water, was extremely pleased with NHP’s delivery and support of the project. “I have worked with NHP before this project and I have never had any problems with back-up support or finding information on the types of products we want to put in. We actually standardised on the Santerno Drives in our specifications so we made sure that they were put into the tender documents to have those installed,” he said.

“NHP did a great job in finishing the project six weeks ahead of schedule. There was a lot of communication back and forth during the commissioning stage, however, the team was on-site and ready to help out at any time. Going forward, we have a few water projects on the table together including a large sewer pump station (four pumps, two in series) that will use the new Aucom EMX3 softstarters,” said Andrew.

From NHP’s perspective, the project was a great success from inception to delivery. “To succeed and meet the fast tracked time frame for completion, our focus needed to be on the details and one percenters,” said Leigh Heath, NHP’s Sector Sales Manager – Water. “NHP’s relationship with DW Controls really assisted us as we both understood how important this project was for future work in the Water Industry. The final touches that completed the project were handled professionally by our Service team, with their commissioning on-site demonstrating to the Water Industry our commitment and support.”

HARMONICSOnce the sites were commissioned, measurements were taken before and after the harmonic filters were brought online and the results were staggering as to their effectiveness in mitigating the harmonics on the mains supply.

The 87 kilometre pipeline will enable the supply initially of up to 8 gigalitres of water per year into the Ballarat and district water supply system, with the potential to increase the volume to 18 gigalitres over the longer term if required.

The Santerno modular S65 frame size VSD rated for 630 kW. The module shown to the far left of the image contains the input rectifier, which then connects via bus bar to the three output modules, which then connects to the motor. The centre output phase contains the user I/O connections and connection of the remote door mount keypad.

These two graphs were taken from NHP’s power analyser which is able to take measurements of voltage, current and harmonic waveforms. With the harmonic filter in circuit and the VSD’s operating at full speed (50Hz), the first graph shows that the line side voltage and current waveforms are purely sinusoidal with no damaging spikes or troughs within the waveform. The second graph is a harmonic spectrum of the voltage distortion on-site which shows that at full speed the measured THVD was 0.8 % which is extremely impressive for such a high power installation.

ELECTRONIC SAfETy SENSORS ANd SOLENOId INTERLOCkSTechnology and user advantages

The electronic monitoring of moving safety guards, including actuation, in non-contact solenoid interlocks, enables the wear-free and non-contact detection of the respective actuator. The patented pulse-echo technology permits large tolerances in the approach of the coded actuator, both in the switching distance and the misalignment. Despite this, the switching points and hysteresis are extremely repeatable and constant. The performance and capabilities of the safety sensors and solenoid interlocks are covered by the following testing standards:

• DefinedbehaviourunderfaultconditionstoEN60947-5-3

• RequirementsonsafetyrelatedpartsuptoPLetoENISO13849-1 or CC4 to AS4024

• RequirementsofEN61508/useuptoSIL3applications

The use of microprocessor technology ensures intelligent diagnostic as well as smooth and fast failure detection, e.g. in the case of cross-shorts or wiring errors. The safety channels of the electronic sensors and electronic solenoid interlocks can be wired in series to build a chain of up to 31 components, depending on the type of device used, and as a result of the independent functional check, CC4 is retained for this series-wired chain.

OPERATING PRINCIPLEAll products of the CSS series have the same operating principle. They use the pulse-echo technology patented by Schmersal to detect the actuator. The sensor

emits electromagnetic pulses, and when the actuator approaches the sensor, the actuator starts oscillating at a predetermined resonant frequency due to the induced energy. These oscillations are in turn read by the sensor. While doing this, the sensor evaluates the distance with regard to the actuator as well as the coding of the actuator. The actuator identified by the sensor is interpreted as a closed safety guard and the safety outputs are enabled.

APPLICATIONThe electronic safety sensors and solenoid interlocks are used for monitoring moving safety guards. When the safety guard is opened, the machine is stopped and the dangerous restart of the machine is in all cases suppressed. Their essential advantage is in the non-contact detection of the safety guard’s position. They are therefore completely wear-free and insensitive to misalignment or offset of the sensor and the actuator.

Due to their physical design, there are numerous applications for CSS sensors. Because of their high repeatability, an extremely low hysteresis and the absence of double switching points in the actuation range, they can be fitted to a wide variety of safety guards or they can be employed for position monitoring on machines axes. The application possibilities of the CSS 34 are considerably extended by its four different approach directions. Mounting on aluminium profiles is in particular carried out smoothly and quickly by means of just two screws using the integral mounting plate. Rotating slotted washers in the mounting plate facilitate an accurate alignment, even with inaccurate mounting holes. In this way, the sensors can be used in almost any place where required. The encapsulated sensors and their actuator are insensitive to shocks, vibrations and dirt. The CSS safety sensors consequently can be used anywhere, especially where protection against dangerous run-down movements of the machine is not required.
