A Fulfilling Mission

OurCFO SpeaksWe started our CSR journey in theHealthcare Sector four years back byproviding assistance to Governmentand Municipal hospitals by donatingmedical equipment. CSR is anobligation under the Companies Actto spend at least 2% of the profitevery year for Society. As we wentalong this CSR journey, theobligation has become for us, amission to serve Society. While thereare many definitions for CorporateSocial Responsibility, to me, CSRmeans the Indian ethos of givingback to Society. All businessenterprises depend on society to besuccessful in their businessventures. Hence it is only right thatbusiness enterprises give somethingback to Society.

I am happy that our CSR missionunder the guidance of our CEO &MD, has now transformed to adifferent level and is creating impact

in the Education Sector. For adeveloping country with such a largepopulation, it is imperative forpoverty alleviation and rapideconomic development that thefocus should be on education andimproving the skills of our people. This is the only way we can achievesustainable progress and transformthe lives of the people of our belovedcountry. Education itself is evolvingwith the introduction of technologyand digitalization. I feel very gladthat we are making a small buteffective contribution in variousschools. The digital classrooms willbring about a massive change in theimpact of education on theunderprivileged sections of oursociety. We are also fortunate thatwe were able to identify the rightdonees in the form of variousSchools and Hospitals. Our CSRprojects have now moved from thecity of Mumbai to the interior parts ofour state of Maharashtra, includingthe backward and tribal areas wherethe need is felt the maximum. Weare thankful to our CSR partners likeRotary and the Lions Club for theirsupport.

The Joy of Giving

Over the past four years, since theGovt. of India mandated thatcorporates contribute to theupliftment of the social sectors, alongside other areas of nationalimportance, CSR has transformedthe thoughts and mindsets of manywho have been associated with it.Here was a chance for them to giveback to Society in a structured andorganised manner.

We started our journey driven by adesire to make a difference in thelives of the not-so-fortunate, andeager to maintain our focus ofproviding assistance directly to thepoint of need.

Eight projects to be completed in atight time frame, within the budgetand with all compliance andpurchase procedures was a bitdaunting, but as we progressed, thejourney became exciting andsatisfying. At the onset, a fewprojects like a rain harvestingproject, and an e-Shiksha project, though well-outlined for theiroutcomes, had to be abandoned dueto implementation considerations. This then initiated the quest for otherrelevant projects.

This year, our projects cateredmainly to the Education Sector.Children from underprivilegedsections find it difficult to competewith children from more privilegedsections of Society. The new method

of teaching, using audio-visual aidsand e-Learning can help bridge thisgap substantially. Modern curriculumin a very easy and interesting form ispresented to the children, therebyincreasing their attentiveness andretention capacity. Teachers alsobenefit as their efforts areaugmented, and their physicalefforts reduced. Five schools wereprovided with digitalized equipmentto cater to the requirements ofe-Learning. Special mention is to bemade of the e-Learning facility whichwas provided to 10 Zilla ParishadSchools at Murbad (a town almost150 kms from Mumbai), and BALApainting (Building as Learning Aid),an innovative primary class teachingaid which was implemented at aMunicipal School at Pune.

Providing basic infrastructurefacilities like a cooking platform, lockers, a shoe rack and computersfor their education, broughtimmense joy to the occupants of aShelter Home (Salaam Balak Trust).Modern scientific laboratoryequipment and modern libraryfacilities will help two schoolsupgrade their educational levels.Another novel project in theHealthcare Sector was the provisionof a modern analytical instrument forformulating drugs to combatlife-threatening diseases, to aninstitute of higher learning (ICT).

Special thanks and appreciation fortheir dedication and passion is dueto the volunteers and other staffmembers of our Company for their“Concept to Commissioning”approach to all the elementsinvolved in the projects. Be it needassessment, selection of equipmentfrom a maintenance andsustainability viewpoint, logistics, infrastructure constraints in remote

rural locations, they were alwaysthere, despite their busy schedules. In turn, I am sure that this exposurewould have helped them experiencethe joy of giving back to Society.

Each and every inauguration andhandover ceremony was unique andmemorable. The feeling of warmthand appreciation we received fromthe institutions we were privileged toserve was something I will alwayscherish. The partnership with TheRotary Club of Mumbai Mahim andThe Lions Club of Kopri Thane wasvery beneficial. They showedimmense ownership whencoordinating these projects.

We take pride in stating that ourCompany thus stands out as a truecorporate citizen, fulfilling its socialresponsibility to relevant causes. Thestrong support and guidance of theManagement of the Company andthe personal involvement of thevolunteers and staff has made thishappen. The sheer satisfaction ourteam experienced, in seeing thehappy faces of the young ones, whoreceived through these small actionsof ours, a new avenue to transformtheir lives, will always be etched inmy memory. It’s been a humblingmoment for me to be a part of thisprocess.

Today's learners want relevant, mobile,self-paced, personalized content. Thisneed is fulfilled through the online modeof e-Learning; here, students can learnat their own comfort and requirement. We initiated this project with thisintention. Our objectives have beenfulfilled.

Prasanna Sarwate headedthe e-Learning project for MatungaPremier School

Being a “Rotarian” at heart made thisproject extremely gratifying for me. Yetthe challenges were daunting. Preparingspecifications for items like lockers, shoestands, kitchen racks, computers andthe like can prove a challenge and callfor hands-on experience. But thanks toexcellent support from our teammembers and our Procurement and ITDepartments, it became quite a breeze.

Equally gratifying was the sheer joy andexhilaration on the faces of the Shelterauthorities and the occupants, whenthey received what we offered. Fromstart to finish, this has been anextremely rewarding experience.

Vijay Gujar headed the Computer andInfrastructural Amenities Upgradationproject for Salaam Baalak Trust

Our project was achieved thanks to asuperb all-round effort by all concerned- the Dnyaneshwar School authoritieswho cooperated with us, the schoolteachers who adapted quickly to thee-Learning facility from the first day ofthe new academic year, and our own

team which showed tremendouscommitment in the face of manychallenges. The handover ceremony wastouching. “Gyan Sanjeevani” is whatthe elated Hindi professor of the Schoolcalled the library and “Sanjeevani” iswhat we at thyssenkrupp hope to be forthis wonderful School, serving theneedy.

The feeling of excitement in the pupils’eyes and the feeling of satisfaction in theteachers’ expressions on receiving thedonations will remain etched in mymemory. Interacting with them at thehandover ceremony was a movingexperience. I was also extremelyhonoured to be part of another successstory of our Company.

Rahul Kadam headed the DigitalEducational Accessories andEducational Software project for PanditDindayal Upadhyay Vidyamandir

The use of lab equipment is a practicalapproach to understanding the sciencesas practical knowledge acquired throughhands-on experience proves moreproductive than theory. The studentswere drawn to the equipment instantly.Their eyes lit up to see the refurbishedlaboratory.

Devendra Joglekar worked on theLaboratory project for the MatungaPremier School

The entire journey of implementing thisproject was heartwarming. I wasparticularly struck by the compassionateapproach of the School Principal Mrs.Chavan towards the development of theSchool for the needy and deservingstudents. This project gave me theopportunity to give back to society.

Our company has successfully reachedout to both levels of education throughtheir projects for this year. On the onehand, we have provided learning aids forprimary education. On the other hand, through this project, we have touchedthe higher education segment, as well. This donation will assist in healthcareenhancement in society through precisedrug development & cutting-edgeresearch capability to pharma students.

Contribution to society aside, this wasalso a proud moment for me in anotherway. As my alma mater, it was a hugehonour to be able to return and providethe interface with industry through thisCSR project.

Sanjay Dodiya headed theElectrochemical Detector project for theInstitute of Chemical Technology

I continue to be taken up by one of thedefinitions of CSR : “CSR is thecontinuing commitment by business tobehave ethically and contribute toeconomic development while improvingthe quality of life of the needy and theirfamilies, as well as the local communityand society at large.”

As we went about implementing theInfrastructure project, more than thechallenges - and there were many - itwas the edifying tone in the voice of astudent in the excitement of thehandover ceremony that remains withme :“Ab toh main computer sikhuga” .There was bliss on his face. It was atthat moment that I decided to volunteerfor CSR activity once again.

Anurag Sharma worked on theComputer and Infrastructural AmenitiesUpgradation project for Salaam BaalakTrust

It was a personal privilege for me towork with our team on a CSR project.More often than not, people like usforget altogether our lesser brethren whocould use help in many areas. Theproject, indeed the whole activity, was

Our Colleagues ReflectFor all this and the chance to giveback at least something to Society, from all that life has given me, Ican say with true conviction thatthe entire journey has beeninteresting, exciting and fulfilling.

an eye-opener for me - an unforgettableexperience!

Suman Banerjee headed the UpgradedLibrary and Digital EducationalAccessories project for DnyaneshwarVidyalaya

Never in my wildest dreams did I everthink that one day, in my associationwith thyssenkrupp, that I would work ona project of this kind and impact. It haspractically changed by views andapproach to society. Thank you, thyssenkrupp!

Dinesh Solanki worked on the DigitalEducational Accessories andEducational Software project for PanditDindayal Upadyay Vidyamandir

When our company adopted fullinvolvement in CSR activities, we couldsee the relevance in and draw inspirationfrom the quote “Businesses cannot besuccessful when the society aroundthem fails.” Our team kept in mind thatwe were dealing with children who arethe future of our country, and we took itas an opportunity to give our best tobring smiles to their faces, while helpingshape their future in a small way.

We approached the project with thesame objectives as that of our everydaywork - maximising positive impact andminimising negative impact. Now havingdelivered our project successfully, wefeel a sense of immense satisfaction. Weare indeed very thankful to ourManagement for giving us this sense ofgratification, by entrusting us with thisproject.

Vaishali Upadhyay and team worked onthe Digital Educational Accessoriesproject for Shishu Vihar School

To say I have benefited immensely frommy involvement with the Salaam Baalakproject is an understatement. On theproject implementation front, I receivedlessons in management, projectcoordination, leadership, teamwork andcooperation. Some of these were new, some known to me. On the personal

front too, the learnings were very useful. One learning was particularly motivating– that fulfilment comes from manythings in life, but not quite in the sameproportion as it comes from doingsomething for others, for nothing.

Vinit Panchal worked on the Computerand Infrastructural AmenitiesUpgradation project for Salaam BaalakTrust

Though there are many fields in which acorporate can contribute to CSR activity,I think education is the best step for thedevelopment of “Young India”. Latesteducational aids such as e-Learning andthe “BALA” painting aid are here to stayand find instant appeal with studentsand teachers alike. We were witness tothis as the project materialised. Therewas also the unforgettable experience ofthe smiles that lit up the young ones’faces!

Sonali Nibandhe worked on the DigitalEducational Accessories andEducational Software project for PanditDindayal Upadhyay Vidyamandir

This project has given me tremendousinsights into a large number of areas. Tostart with, was the honour theManagement bestowed on us toimplement this important project. Beinga remote rural location, required that weexecute the project carefully. Then therewas the trust of our teammates who letme take the lead, despite being theyoungest member. Associating with ourCSR Consultant Mr Suryakumar was asheer joy and learning experience from amyriad points of view. I learnt humilityfrom the members of the Lions Club whoreadily contributed to the ground-levelwork. I realised the benefit of thesystems that we have at office - theyserved me in good stead. Lastly, Ireceived a lesson in living from a groupof children eating their humble mid-daymeal at one of the Schools. It’s truewhen they say that luxury in life is not inhow much or how little you have, but inthe quality of experiences you make, outof whatever quantity you have!

Pratik Mukherjee headed the DigitalEducational Accessories project for theMurbad Zilla Parishad Schools

Looking back, the entire process, fromvision to realisation was a life-enrichening experience for me. I can stillrecall a statement by the School’sPrincipal made in the initial stages of theproject - “I do not want any student ofthis School to say that he passed outfrom an average school”. Reflecting, ourCompany has done wonders byselecting an educational institution thatneeds support, rather than an institutionthat is self-sufficient.

Sushant Kulkarni worked on the DigitalEducational Accessories andEducational Software project for PanditDindayal Upadhyay Vidyamandir

The importance of a library cannot beunderstated. I can still vividly recall howI was moved to tears by the speechgiven by a 4 grade girl on the day of the

th

inauguration in which she spoke aboutthe importance of books. The joy on thefaces of all the school children on seeinga new library was exhilarating yethumbling. The school staff were alsovery enthusiastic about the project. Theirenthusiasm was a motivating force forus. I am very proud to have beenassociated with a CSR initiative of ourcompany and I look forward toparticipating in the future.

Manjusha Bhadgaonkar worked on theUpgraded Library and DigitalAccessories project for DnyaneshwarVidyalaya

It has been a privilege for me toparticipate in the CSR activities overthese last few years. The CSR mandateallows corporates to support a numberof causes of national significance, butour company has chosen those avenuesthat make our CSR donations anexercise in humanity. For me, aside fromfollowing our compliance policiesrelating to the procurement activities, that is the standout feature of our CSRprojects.

TS Bharadwaj worked across all ourCSR projects
