What is Industrial Solar Thermal?

The Technology

3 4Parabolic trough collectors tracking the sun

Solar thermal technology uses the sun’s energy, rather than fossil fuels, to generate

low-cost, environmentally friendly thermal energy; i.e. heat. Our solar systems

often incorporate thermal storage so that heat can be delivered around the clock.

Energy use does not have to stop when the sun goes down. As a result, we can

reduce fuel bills by up to 70%.

Solar thermal systems differ from solar photovoltaic (PV) systems that generate Solar thermal systems differ from solar photovoltaic (PV) systems that generate

electricity. The peak efficiency of generating solar heat is greater than 65%

compared to 20% for PV systems, and PV electricity generation stops when the sun

goes down. In addition, solar heat output increases with rising temperatures,

whereas PV suffers a significant decrease. Overall, for a given area, our collectors

deliver three or four times more energy than PV systems.

Abengoa employs parabolic trough collectors that concentrate the sun’s energy to

deliver heat in the form of hot water, steam or process heat to client facilities in

the industrial and commercial sector. Abengoa’s collectors automatically track the

sun throughout the day to maximize the capture of solar energy. Sunlight is

reflected off the collectors and concentrated onto the receiver, where thermal

energy is absorbed by a heat transfer fluid. The fluid is heated to the desired

temperature and delivered to the process loads using a heat exchanger.

Compared to fixed-tilt collectors (flat plates), tracking is advantageous because the Compared to fixed-tilt collectors (flat plates), tracking is advantageous because the

collectors operate longer during the day and energy delivery is more efficient and

uniform throughout the day. Parabolic trough systems are easily scalable whether

the need is for 1 or 50 million Btu/h output. They are also extremely flexible and

economically deliver heat from 120 F to over 400 F. Thermal energy storage tanks

can be incorporated to deliver heat 24/7 or to meet client schedules.

Investing in Solar Thermal

Why Do It Now?

The state and federal incentives have never been better for solar thermal

technology. Currently, the State of California, through the California Solar

Initiative (CSI), will provide up to $800,000 to build a commercial system that

displaces conventional energy. Additionally, our systems qualify for the Federal

Investment Tax Credit (ITC), which provides a tax credit equal to 30% of the

gross installation cost of the system.

Depending on the application, Abengoa can install a system that will provide Depending on the application, Abengoa can install a system that will provide a

simple cash on cash payback in less than 2 years. After year 2, the fuel savings

combined with incentives will grow the return on investment throughout the

life of the project.

Furthermore, solar thermal technologies reduce the emission of greenhouse

gases and air pollutants and mitigate the impact on climate change.

The incentive programs are set to expire within the next 3 years. The CSI is only

valid for systems that are operational by the end of 2017, and the money is

awarded on a “first come, first served” basis on a declining scale until the money

runs out. Additionally, systems must be operational before the end of 2016 to

capture the 30% ITC, before it decreases to 10%. As a capital investment, the

system can be depreciated over a five-year accelerated basis.

Our solar thermal technology is a zero-waste and zero-emissions system. It reduces

the emission of greenhouse gases and air pollutants, and mitigates the impact of

commercial operations on climate change. After the life of the system, the

aluminum collectors and steel piping system are profitably recycled since no

hazardous materials are used in the system.

Installing an Abengoa solar heat system is one of the most economic ways to lower Installing an Abengoa solar heat system is one of the most economic ways to lower

the carbon footprint and protect the environment. On-site energy generation

reduces the need to extract and transport fossil fuels. For many businesses, water

heating and/or steam generation can account for over 50% of greenhouse gas

emissions. For businesses required to meet sustainability benchmarks, solar thermal

systems are an ideal solution.

Primary energy consumption in the US is used 40% to generate electricity,

28% for transportation fuels and 31% as heat. While the renewable energy

focus is on solar electricity generation, solar heat is a large untapped market

with a vital part to play in the US energy mix to stabilize prices and to

mitigate the impacts of energy consumption on climate change.
