DESCRIPTION

This article deals with a real-world application of microwaves for industrial/commercial thermal processing: the process focus is on high temperature microwave sintering and the product focus is on zirconia based dental restorations. The general advantages of microwave sintering over conventional sintering is outlined, followed by a summary of scientific research that established such advantages for zirconia based dental restoration material. Subsequently, the microwave sintering furnaces that are commercially available to exploit the advantages of microwave sintering for zirconia based dental restoration products are briefly described; these are the ADS and AMPS systems for limited scale batch processing throughputs and larger industrial scale continuous throughputs respectively. Process development strategy for scale up from ADS batch to AMPS continuous microwave sintering is also discussed. Similar approaches can help develop continuous microwave processing methodologies for other sintered products and also microwave enhanced chemical synthesis and calcination products.
