What was the Industrial Revolution?

• It is actually a series of revolutions which improved industry and manufacturing, transportation, agricultural production and communication.

• Most of the movements are national (impact the entire nation), but the improvements to industry and manufacturing deeply impact the North while the agricultural movements impact the south.

• Definition – period of rapid growth in using machines for manufacturing and production that began in the mid-1700s.

What was industry in the United States like in the 1700s?

• Limited, at home industries• You made everything that you

needed including furniture, clothing, and household items

• There were some skilled workers such as; blacksmiths, coopers, cobblers, and carpenters.

Why did we change into an industrialized nation?

• Expansion of population due to improved agriculture and transportation.

• Traditional methods of manufacturing no longer produced enough goods for the consumers– Caused us to create machines to make

more efficient use of our time

How did machines change the textile industry?

• Water frame – produced cotton thread quickly from cotton fiber speeding up the speed of textile production and reducing the cost.– Water powered

Who is Samuel Slater and what was his impact on the Industrial Revolution?

• He was a skilled British mechanic who snuck the ideas for British textile factories out of Great Britain and shared them with the United States.

• This was illegal and had to be done completely from memory

• Created the most successful textile mills and a new type of thread to make the industry successful in the United States

What was the huge manufacturing breakthrough for the United States

and why was it?

• Interchangeable parts which made machines easier to assemble and for broken parts to be replaced

What was Eli Whitney’s influence over the Industrial Revolution?

• Eli Whitney – created mass production techniques that allowed manufacturing to be more efficient• Interchangeable Parts • Interchangeable machine

tools• Created Mass Production –

efficient production of a large number of goods

What pushed the advancement of manufacturing in the United

States?• The War of 1812 and the fact we

could no longer purchase the cheapest manufactured goods from Great Britain because we were at war with them.
