Industrial LuxeIt’s di!cult to describe designer Rafael de Cárdenas’s work. Or rather, it’s easy to blithely call it Postmodern, despite its be- ing free of any of the movement’s more cloy- ing a"ectations. Yes, de Cárdenas, who runs the New York–based o!ce Architecture at Large, shares some Postmodern designers’ penchant for jumbo graphics and color, but he tempers the giddy youthfulness of, say, Memphis and its millennial kin with ballroom polish. “It’s important to #nd the right balance between materials that are youthful and animated, but also elegant in their execution,” he says. For an upcom- ing retail store, de Cárdenas is making ex- tensive use of anodized aluminum and expanded metals. “We are always excited to elevate industrial materials and appropri- ate their use.” M
