Australian Center For International Agricultural Research

Delegation Visited Mnsuam For Monitoring Of Pulses Project

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Asif Ali met with the delega�on and apprised them of research and development ac�vi�es as well as na�onal and interna�onal projects at the varsity. He further stated that the pulses project is first of its own kind which aims to enhance the produc�on and profitability of pulses in cereal based cropping systems in Pakistan. Demand for pulses in Pakistan has increased over the last 20 years, while produc�on has decreased. Legumes, especially chickpea and len�ls, fetch high prices, but have been pushed out to the most marginal lands. This project will re-introduce legumes in cropping systems as a priority for agriculture development; this would have nutri�onal, economic and environmental benefits.

The Australian delega�on also visited Research Labs, Research Farms, Fish Ponds, Hydroponic Unit, Green House, Weather Sta�on, Vegetable Nursery Unit and newly constructed building of University's main campus. The delega�on was also shown prac�cal demonstra�on of rhizobial seed inocula�on of chickpea seeds. All members appreciated the R&D ac�vi�es at the University under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Asif Ali, Vice Chancellor and commended for efforts being made for be�erment of farming community. A�erwards, the ACIAR delega�on planted saplings of morniga at the campus.

A delega�on comprising representa�ves of Australian Center for Interna�onal Agricultural Research (ACIAR); Dr. Eric Hu�ner, Research Program Manager for Crops, Dr. Gerard McEvilly, Program Coordinator, Dr. Munawar Raza Kazmi, Country Manager, visited MNS-UAM to monitor ac�vi�es related to on-going collabora�ve project of MNS-UAM and ACIAR for increasing produc�vity and profitability of pulses produc�on in cereal based cropping system in Pakistan.

An Automa�c Weather Sta�on (AWS) system has been installed at the varsity by the Office of Research Innova�on and Commercializa�on (ORIC) for weather forecas�ng. The system was put into use to measure real-�me temperature, humidity, air pressure, wind direc�on and speed, visibility, fog, smog and solar radia�on etc. It is one of the most advanced systems that provides accurate weather forecas�ng a�er every five minutes and gives details of changes in weather parameters. Apart from providing precise and authen�c weather updates to agricultural-research ins�tu�ons, the AWS will facilitate the farmers with �mely forecast of rainfall and weather-related informa�on to help them plan their sowing and other management practcies. The system will work under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Zulfiqar Ali, Director ORIC and Dr. Habib-ur-Rehman, Lecturer Agronomy.

IQBAL DAY OBSERVED AT MNS-UAMTo celebrate 141st Birthday of Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal, the 'Poet of the East', a ceremony was organized under the auspicious of MNS-UAM Literary Society. The ceremony was presided over by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Asif Ali. During the event, an essay compe��on was held on the topic of "?????? ?? ????? ?? ????????", wherein more than 40 students par�cipated. The compe��on was won by Ms. Saira Azam, whereas, Ms. Shaista Chugtai and Mr. Muhammad Wajid bagged second and third posi�ons, respec�vely. While addressing to the par�cipants, Prof. Dr. Asif Ali said that Allama Iqbal was a great poet, philosopher and thinker who made muslims realize their dis�nct Islamic iden�ty and sense of self-respect and dignity through his poetry. His role for incep�ng the idea of Pakistan can never be forgo�en. It is impera�ve for youth to not just memorize his poetry but to understand its message in its true essence. Talking to the audience, Dr. Rehan Iqbal, Assistant Professor, BZU said that we should understand Iqbal's philosophy of 'Khudi' (self-awareness). He further shed light on different dimensions of Iqbal's poetry and his life. He elaborated Iqbal's concept of na�onalism and patrio�sm in a comprehensive manner. His lecture was followed by a thought provoking discussion in which students ques�ons were answered. Other speakers also expressed their views regarding the need to study Iqbal for taking guidance for various aspects of life.

MOU SIGNED BETWEEN TELENOR

AND MNS-UAM

On November 9, 2018, an MoU was signed between Telenor Pakistan Pvt. Ltd. and MNS-UAM to join hands to collaborate for promo�on of "Saath Do" Mobile Applica�on, which is a pla�orm that aims to connect and digitalize farming communi�es and further act as a bridge among all stakeholders of the agriculture value chain. It is focused on offering a seamless experience to its users that would help them increase their yields and maximize their profits in the agriculture domain. Further, under this agreement, Telenor would conduct a launch event at MNS-UAM on "Agriculture Value Chain and Saath Do Communi�es" and also expose students of the varsity for entrepreneurial ac�vi�es and job opportuni�es, wherever possible. Prof. Dr. Shafqat Saeed, Director External Linkages, MNSUAM and Mr. Ali Hassan, Product Manager, Telenor affixed their signatures on the MoU on behalf of both par�es, respec�vely. At this occasion, the Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Asif Ali and Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Ish�aq A. Rajwana were also present.

TH11 MEETING OF SOUTH PUNJAB

AGRICULTURE FORUM

Prof. Dr. Irfan Ahmed Baig, Dean, FSSH briefed about introducing new degree program B.Sc. (Hons) Farm Management. He discussed different courses and internship. Internship was proposed in 5th semester and 8th semester. Mr. Mohsin Gardezi told that generally two types of skilled persons are needed on a progressive farm i. Crop manager ii. Farm Manager. Farm managers are not good crop managers. Ensuring yield is the responsibility of crop managers, while responsibility of farm manger is to ensure profitability. The University's role should be budding up students and farms. Our farms will be available for students' training. The Chair endorsed that crop management and provision of technical knowledge is our responsibility. He further emphasized that before taking this ini�a�ve we must take farmers on board, create awareness among farmers related to this program and purpose of this program is to prepare future farmers for farm management. Dr. Sagheer Ahmed, shared his foreign experience, he told that consultants give recommenda�ons for technical problems and they are paid for their consultancy. A�er frui�ul discussion, it was unanimously decided that paid internship will be offered in last two semesters on farms of progressive growers. One Chinese language course was also proposed to the proposed degree program. Prof. Dr. Irfan Baig was directed to arrange a mee�ng of stakeholders preferably with research board mee�ng to discuss its implica�ons before star�ng of B.Sc. (Hons) Farm Management degree program.

The Chair briefed the house about 2nd SINO-PAK Interna�onal Conference on Innova�ons in Co�on Breeding & Biotechnology, scheduled for November 26-27, 2018 at MNS-UAM, wherein twenty-three foreign scien�sts are par�cipa�ng. Further 28 Interna�onal abstracts and 60 abstracts from Na�onal Scien�sts have been planned to be presented in the two-day conference. Dr. Tanveer-ul-Haq, Chairman, Department of Soil and Environmental Sciences informed the mee�ng about 1st Interna�onal Conference on Soil and Crop Health in Changing Climate going to be held on November, 28-29, 2018 at MNS-UAM. He told that more than 10 par�cipants from Interna�onal Ins�tutes and more than 50 na�onal scien�sts will be presen�ng their papers during the conference. The Chair requested all members of SPAF to ac�vely par�cipate in both conferences.

The 11th mee�ng of South Punjab Agriculture Forum (SPAF) was held on November 14, 2018 under the Chairmanship of the Vice Chancellor, MNS-UAM in the Commi�ee Room of the university.

Talking about outlay of Multan city with mango, the Chair suggested that Director, Mango Research Ins�tute Multan should take lead. Mr. Naveed Asmat Kahloon, Assistant Director, Agriculture Informa�on Multan suggested to name University blocks as Mango block and Co�on block rather than A, B, C blocks. He also suggested mango planta�on on Shujabad road Multan. Mr. Mohsin Shaheed Gardezi, endorsed that few places named as Wateen and Alfalah chowk at Lahore city. The Chair suggested consul�ng with PHA, Punjab Hor�culture Authority and NHA. Signing of an MoU with NHA & PHA could be an op�on. Dr. Sagheer Ahmed, Director, CRI, Multan suggested that this could be considered under Prime Minister's Green and Clean Pakistan program.

Talking about Chinese language course, the Chair informed that a 6 months Chinese language course is being offered under Department of Con�nuing Educa�on at MNS-UAM. Prof. Dr. Shafqat Saeed, told the house that a class of 6 hours a day is compulsory. It was demanded by members that there should be relaxa�on in �ming for employees. The house decided that the University should offer Chinese Language Course of one-year dura�on with 3 hours a day for employees. At the end of the mee�ng, the Chair expressed gra�tude to all SPAF members to spare their �me to a�end the mee�ng.

FARMERS TRAINING ON HOW TO PRODUCEMORE WITH LESS WATER A training workshop on "Successful crop produc�on under prevailing water shortage" was organized by Department of Agronomy on November 13, 2018. This training workshop was part of outreach ac�vity of HEC funded project under Social Integra�on Outreach Program SIOP-087-18/R&D/2015. Par�cipants were from South Punjab Agriculture Forum, students, faculty members and farming community along with other stake holders. Prof. Dr. Asif Ali, Vice Chancellor, MNS-UAM emphasized that Pakistan is facing acute water shortage. To cope with water shortage, efficient measures should be undertaken in this context. University is striving for sor�ng out various ways to cope with water deficit. We are determined to disseminate outcomes of our research to farming community. He thanked all the stake holders for becoming part of this training. Mr. Mudassir Aziz, Lecturer Department of Agronomy, MNS-UAM, introduced the par�cipants of workshop with different project ac�vi�es. He discussed water shortage scenario and strategies for successful crop produc�on.

Dr. Hafiz Muhammad Nasrullah, Agronomist, Agronomic Research Sta�on, Khanewal, highlighted the significance of ridge planta�on of wheat for water saving in agriculture. He told that there is 35-50% water saving with 5-15 % yield increase with ridge method of sowing. Lodging can be decreased up to 80-90%. Dr. Ahmed Naeem Shehzad, Assistant Professor, Department of Agronomy, Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan presented Status and perspec�ve of potash use in Pakistan in context of climate change. He urged that potassium fer�liza�on is essen�al for improving water rela�ons in plant. There are other benefits of potassium fer�liza�on including increase in nitrogen use efficiency, resistance of crop from lodging and improving quality of produce. He told that foliar applica�on of potash is effec�ve in mi�ga�ng harmful effects of water deficit in different crops. He shared research findings with different par�cipants of workshop and insisted use of potassium in different crops for balanced fer�lizer use. Dr. Fahim Nawaz, Assistant Professor, Department of Agronomy, MNS-UAM postulated the wheat produc�on guidelines for maximum yield under water deficit condi�ons. He told that under water deficit, that par�cular variety of wheat should be selected that can produce more yield with less water. He told that �mely sowing of wheat ensures healthy crop stand. Method of sowing of wheat plays an important role in moisture availability to crop. Planta�on of wheat on beds is very useful technique for saving water. Mul�ple benefits can be achieved through bed planta�on of wheat including improving in fer�lizer use efficiency and lodging of crop is reduced. Prof. Dr. Shafqat Saeed, concluded the technical session of training workshop. He thanked all the resource persons for sharing useful informa�on with par�cipants of workshop. He also thanked par�cipants of training workshops. A�erwards, prac�cal field demonstra�on of augmented furrow method of wheat sowing was done. Dr. Hafiz Muhammad Nasrullah demonstrated farmers about this innova�ve method of sowing of wheat for water saving.

Constitution Of A Peaceful Society AndTeachings Of Allama Iqbal:Special Lecture By Sahibzada Sultan Ahmad Ali

Under the umbrella of Social and Religious Tolerance course, a lecture on "Cons�tu�on of a Peaceful Society and Teachings of Allama Iqbal" was held on Nov. 14, 2018. The keynote speaker was Sahibzada Sultan Ahmad Ali, Chairman, Muslim Ins�tute. Sahibzada Sultan Ahmad Ali is 10th descendant of renowned Sufi of Islamic-world Hazrat Sultan Bahoo (R.A). Prof. Dr. Asif Ali, VC, MNS-UAM welcomed the guests and urged the students for self-accountability. He advised students to go through the literary works of Allama Iqbal and reflect their learning in various day to day ac�vi�es.

Sahibzada Sultan stated that the vision of Allama Iqbal on sectarianism, ideological extremism and forma�on of new ins�tu�ons was an example for the na�on. According to Iqbal, an ideal society is one that is united, integrated, egalitarian, properly educated, morally emancipated, technically trained, peaceful, and socially democra�c. Iqbal is of the firm view that an ideal society must also be a peaceful one as he truly believes that "Islam is essen�ally a religion of peace". He stressed a need to promote the vision and philosophy of Poet of East's to ensure las�ng peace and weed out terrorism from the country. Iqbal always gave the message of unity, faith, peace and self-reliance for the prosperity of the society, he further added. Mr. Rasheed Ahmad, Lecturer, Islamic Studies, MNS-UAM said that Iqbal's teaching are beacon to maintain tolerance, peace and stability in the society. He said that youth should transform themselves into Iqbal's 'Mard-e-Momin' and strive for self-reliance.

Awareness Seminar About Consumer

Rights And How To Approach Consumer Courts

An awareness seminar about consumer rights and how to approach consumer courts was organized by Department of Agribusiness and Applied Economics on November 14, 2018. Mr. Muhammad Usman Khan, Advocate at High Court Multan was the resource person. Mr. Usman Khan highlighted the importance of consumer rights and how the general public can avail their rights.

He also explained the whole procedure of registering a complaint against businesses having defects/flaws in their products and services. He emphasized to keep original receipts and warrantee cards a�er each purchase. He informed the audience that we can also claim for the services such as internet, travel, insurance, medical, electrical, courier and telecom etc. He stated numerous benefits of complaint in the court as one can get jus�ce for him/herself and other vic�ms alike him/herself, get what he/she has paid for, get compensa�on for his/her losses, curbs unfair trade prac�ces and making use of their rights etc.

Then he described the relief that the court may grant such as removal of defect, replacement, repayment of price, compensa�on, discon�nue of hazardous sale, forbidden of false adver�sement and li�ga�on costs etc. The speaker stated various important laws alike Pure Food Ordinance 1960, West Pakistan Slaughter Control Act 1963, The Cantonment Pure Food Act 1966, The Pakistan Hotels and Restaurant Act 1976, The Fish Inspec�on and Quality Control Act 1998, Pakistan Compe��on Act 2010, Price Control and Preven�on of Profiteering and Hoarding Act 1977, Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) Act 1996. He said that PSQCA has 26,764 standard specifica�ons generally conforming to the WTO regime and told that the adop�on of PSQCA standards is voluntary. Tes�ng facili�es and personnel are inadequate and standards are inconsistently applied in the country. A large number of students and faculty members a�ended this seminar.

Workshop To Enhance Statistical Skills Department of Agribusiness and Applied Economics of MNS-UAM organized a four day workshop on "Basic Sta�s�cs with R". The objec�ve of this training was to impart prac�cal training regarding the use of this sta�s�cal tool for data analyses and interpreta�on. The training focused on basics of R So�ware and hands on approach to perform descrip�ve analysis of qualita�ve and quan�tate data, carry out regression, correla�on, ANOVA and other inferen�al sta�s�cs tests for different types of data. . Par�cipants were trained about introduc�on of this program, principles, data entry, using program func�ons, and sample R sessions for data analyses. Important topics like test of hypothesis for popula�on mean, F and T distribu�on, basics of research design, ANOVA, some basic design layout with principal to solve the various problems related to agriculture, factorial experiments, beyond ANOVA test, post hoc tests, Treatment structure, contrasts, orthogonal contrasts and polynomials for quan�ta�ve treatment factors, Split & split block experiment were taught. Dr. Hamamd Nadeem Tahir, Dr. Abdul Ghaffar, Dr. Sammi Ullah and Ms. Samra Naseem gave comprehensive presenta�ons on these topics. The training was a�ended by large number of postgraduate students and faculty members.

A two day Sino-Pak international conference on “Innovation in Cotton and Biotechnology” will begin from November 26 at MNS-UAM. Institute of Plan Breeding and Biotechnology (IPB2) of MNS-UAM in collaboration with Biotechnology Research Institute China, Bahauddin Zakariya University and Punjab government is going to organize the conference. MNS-UAM is honoured to welcome Scientist from China, USA, Iran, Uzbekistan, Turkey and Malaysia besides national agriculture scientists. The IPB2 has received confirmation of 24 International Scientist for the two days conference.

Applications are invited for different posts under the Technology Development Fund project entitled “Development and Indigenization of Floppy Sprinkler System for Future Irrigation” funded by Higher Education Commission. The details and eligibility criteria is given below.
