General GuidelinesAluminium pigments, both leafing and non-leafing, are commonly used in a variety of industrial coatings including
maintenance coatings, powder coatings and traditional liquid coatings for general industrial use. Aluminium pigments bring
value to these coatings both by increasing their aesthetic value and by adding functional attributes to the finished coating
film. Silberline manufactures a broad range of metallic pigments well suited for many different types of industrial coatings
and industrial coatings applications. Our family of pigments include specific grades of differing particle sizes, pigment flake
geometries, and treatments for suitability in waterborne, UV and high solids industrial coatings. This guide is designed to
help with the selection of the most appropriate pigment for a particular application or aesthetic appearance.
Below is a brief list outlining a few basics designed to help with the
selection of the most appropriate pigment for your particular application.
• Pigments with smaller particle sizes provide better opacity than similar pigments
with larger particle sizes.
• Pigments with wider particle size distribution ranges provide better opacity than those
with narrow particle size distributions.
• Pigments with narrow particle size distributions can be used with chromatic colourants
to provide cleaner colours than pigments with wider particle size distribution ranges.
• Pigments with round flake geometry (silver dollar geometry) are typically brighter than
pigments of the same particle size with cornflake geometry.

ALUMIN IUM SELECT IONPIGMENT FLAKE GEOMETRY
Standard CornflakeThis class of pigments is characterized by irregular flake
surface and shape. Particle size distribution ranges
are not highly controlled. They offer good opacity and
typical metallic aesthetics but are not a good choice if a
strong bright metallic appearance or clean metallic colour
is required.
Polished CornflakeThe polished cornflake grades are manufactured to be
brighter and whiter than grades with standard cornflake
geometry. Grades based on this flake technology are
well suited for use with chromatic pigment systems
creating an array of colourful metallic effects.
Silver Dollar FlakeSilver Dollar flakes have a lenticular geometry and are
differentiated from cornflake geometry by having very
smooth polished surfaces and more rounded edges.
These grades are automotive quality pigments which
have highly controlled particle size distribution ranges
and typically produce very clean exceptionally bright
aesthetics. They are the brightest and whitest pigments
based on their average particle size and will produce a
very smooth patina and clean colours when tinted.
Vacuum Metallised FlakeVacuum metallised flakes are unique in having
exceptionally smooth surfaces and uniform flake thickness.
VMF grades are not made by a typical ball milling process.
Instead, these grades are made by a vapor deposition
process. They are capable of producing truly mirror like
reflectance when properly formulated.

INDUSTR IAL COAT INGS
Leafing ProductsLeafing aluminium pigments form one of the two
major categories of aluminium pigments. The ability of
an aluminium pigment to leaf in a liquid coating is a
function of the fatty acid lubricant used during the milling
process. Typically a saturated fatty acid such as stearic is
employed which coats the metal surface providing both
hydrophobic and oleophobic characteristics. These non-
wetting characteristics are responsible for the leafing
properties of the pigment. When properly formulated and
applied, a coating containing leafing pigments provides a
solid bright silver finish. The flakes orient at or near the
film surface parallel to each other and to the coating
substrate. This orientation creates a continuous metallic
flake barrier and a surface that will reflect light in a highly
specular manner. This characteristic is also useful in
protecting the underlying coating film from degradation
due to UV light and environmental exposure.
Standard Leafing PastesStandard leafing grades are based on cornflake geometry.
They are manufactured to offer economical solutions to
the coatings formulator seeking to develop coatings with
typical metallic leafing effects. These products are available
in medium to fine particle size and are characterized by a
broad particle size distribution range for good coverage.
ETERNABRITE® Leafing PastesSilberline’s ETERNABRITE leafing pastes are based on
cornflake geometry manufactured to provide enhanced
leafing characteristics. ETERNABRITE products offer
a stronger, brighter more specular leafing reflectance
compared to the standard leafing grades. They are
characterized by a broad particle size distribution range
offering good coverage.
ETERNABRITE® Premier Leafing PastesETERNABRITE Premier leafing pastes are based on
silver dollar flake geometry. They produce the strongest
most brilliant leafing effects of any milled aluminium
pigment. When properly formulated, ETERNABRITE Premier
pigments are capable of producing coatings with finishes
approaching that of polished solid metal.

INDUSTR IAL COAT INGS
Non-Leafing ProductsNon-leafing aluminium pigments are distinguished from
leafing grades by their orientation in the coating film.
Rather than orienting at or near the film surface, they are
distributed evenly throughout the entire film. The random
orientation of non-leafing pigment flakes throughout the
coating film is due to the use of an unsaturated fatty acid,
such as oleic, as a lubricant in the milling process. The
metallic appearance created by non-leafing pigments is
often characterized by a metallic grain or patina. Because of
their orientation in the coating film, non-leafing aluminium
pigments are ideally suited for producing a broad range of
dazzling metallic colours when used in combination with
chromatic pigments. Non-leafing grades typically produce
a much less specular reflectance than leafing grades.
Standard Non-LeafingSilberline’s standard non-leafing grades are based on
cornflake geometry. They are ideally suited for use in
industrial coatings where economics and typical metallic
appearance is important. The metallic effects produced
by these grades range from a muted silver to a standard
silver appearance. The standard non-leafing pastes are
available as grades with particle sizes ranging from medium
to extra fine. They are characterized by a relatively broad
particle size distribution range for good coverage.
SPARKLE SILVER®Series Non-LeafingSilberline’s SPARKLE SILVER pigments are polished
cornflakes manufactured specifically to maximize their
silver metallic colour and sparkle. They are ideally suited
for use in industrial coatings where a strong metallic
appearance is important. The metallic effects produced
by these grades range from a bright silver appearance
to dazzling silver sparkle. They are available in coarse
to extra fine particle sizes and are characterized by a
controlled particle size distribution range for enhanced
metallic brightness and sparkle. They are ideally suited
for use with chromatic pigments to create a full spectrum
of brilliant metallic colours.

ALUMIN IUM P IGMENTSFOR WATERBORNEINDUSTR IAL COAT INGS
Aluminium pigmented waterborne coatings have
rapidly become a popular and environmentally friendly
alternative to traditional solvent based metallic industrial
coatings. Care should be taken when formulating with
aluminium pigments in waterborne coatings to minimize
the reaction between the aluminium pigment and water
producing hydrogen gas. Silberline has developed
several technologies to help control this reaction. These
technologies involve the use of chemical passivating
agents to reduce the ability of the aluminium pigment
to react with water. Stable waterborne coatings with
striking metallic effects can be developed by using
proper formulating techniques and careful selection
of coatings resin and additives. AQUASIL® BP,
SILBERCOTE AQ and AQUA PASTE families of aluminum
pigments are three of the most effective technologies
for use in waterborne coatings available today. All three
technologies have proven to be stable in a wide range
of waterborne industrial coatings formulations. In
addition we have introduced APL 12243, a novel
product developed specifically for waterborne radiant
barrier coatings.
STARBR ITE® VACUUMMETALL ISED P IGMENTSFOR INDUSTR IALCOAT INGS
For coatings that require an extraordinarily bright “mirror
like” metallic effect Silberline has developed STARBRITE
Vacuum Metallised Pigments (VMP). Unlike traditional milled
aluminium pigments, STARBRITE VMP is produced
by depositing an ultra-thin layer of pure aluminium
metal onto a polymer substrate. The aluminium metal
layer is then converted into STARBRITE VMP flake.
When properly formulated into an industrial coating and
applied appropriately these flakes will lay flat in a perfect
plane producing a coating with truly “mirror like”
reflectance. When combined with transparent pigments
and dyes an infinite spectrum of brilliant colours can
be developed. For applications requiring the same mirror
like reflectance in waterborne coatings Silberline offers
HYDROSTAR® passivated VMP flake grades.
7
Silberline is committed to providing metallic pigments
for use in all segments of the industrial coatings market,
including powder coatings. The use of metallic pigmented
powder coatings has grown steadily during the last decade.
This growth is expected to continue. Silberline has devel-
oped several pigment technologies to keep pace with
this growth. These technologies are designed to provide
metallics compatible with current and developing coatings
types and applications.
The following families of Silberline aluminium pigments
are designed to provide value to the powder coatings
manufacturer based on ease of use, safety in handling
and performance in the finished coating. Our products
provide compatibility across a full range of powder
coatings types and support the demands of virtually
any application. The specific grades within our pigment
palette provide a full spectrum of dazzling metallic
effect possibilities.
SILVET® E grades are manufactured in pellet form. They
are comprised of aluminium pigment in a polyethylene
wax carrier. Each pellet is comprised typically of 80%
aluminium pigment and 20% PE wax. SILVET E is
typically incorporated into powder coatings through
extrusion techniques.
SILVET® E1 grades are manufactured in pellet form. They
are comprised of aluminium pigment in a polyethylene
wax carrier similar to that of SILVET E. SILVET E1
products typically contain 70% aluminium pigment and
30% PE wax carrier. SILVET E1 pellets are produced in
a low shear process and are easier to disperse than a
com-parable SILVET E pellet. SILVET E1 pellets are typically
incorporated into powder coatings through extrusion techniques.
SILVET® J grades are manufactured in pellet form. They
are comprised of aluminium pigment in an aldehyde
resin carrier. SILVET J products typically contain 80%
aluminium pigment and 20% aldehyde resin carrier.
SILVET J is typically incorporated into powder coatings
through extrusion techniques.
SILVET® P grades are manufactured in pellet form.
They are comprised of aluminium pigment in an
acrylic resin carrier. SILVET P products typically contain
80% aluminium pigment and 20% acrylic resin carrier.
SILVET P is typically incorporated into powder coatings
through extrusion techniques.
SILBERCOTE® PC-X grades represent a new generation
of high performance aluminium pigments for use in
powder coatings applied by electrostatic spray. These
grades are typically incorporated into powder coatings
by “dry blending” and are conveniently packaged in 2
kilogram bags for ease and safety in handling.
LED/DF grades are aluminium pigments manufactured in
loosely bound pigment flake aggregates known dedusted
flakes. The surfaces of Silberline “LED” grades are polymer
treated for increased compatibility with electrostatic spray
and bonding applications.
