How Long Have You Been Benefiting from EDDL?

Thousands of instrument technicians have been benefiting from multi-vendor EDDL interoperability daily since 1992 - without even knowing it is there...– Commissioning– Loop Check & Simulation– Calibration Trim– Identification– Parameterization & Range– Monitoring– Diagnostics

EDDL reduces cost and time by eliminating need to carry multiple

Why Do I Need This?- Device Integration & Plant Life Cycle

Problem:– Software is used to decode and display device

information– New versions and types of devices come to the plant

every few months– Software must be kept up to date with new devices

Possible solutions:– Install new software version every time

• Impossible– Install new software driver

• Not permitted on a DCS, must be separated• Conflicts with each other and other software

– Copy new device description (EDDL)• No change to the software

34

Device Diagnostics Evolution- A Brief History

Device diagnostics is becoming increasingly convenient and accessible

Diagnostics at device

configuration by operator

3.2

EDDL reduces cost and time by enabling all work to be done

from a single “dashboard”

Access diagnostics in just two clicks

37

EDDL is Intrinsically Robust- Integrated Host

EDDL is a text description– Does not affect run-time stability of DCS– Device management client can be integrated on DCS

operator consoles• Diagnostics

38

EDDL is Universal:- Supports System Configuration

EDDL enables FOUNDATION Fieldbus configuration– Fieldbus loops cannot be configured without EDDL

EDDL simplifies external access to device data– Enables automatic OPC server configuration

Same standard– IEC 61804-2 Ed. 2 Blocks– IEC 61804-3 Ed. 1 EDDL

39

EDDL is Universal- Universal Handheld Field Communicator

With EDDL universal handheld it is easier to work in the field– Commissioning– Setup– Troubleshooting– Calibration trim

There are some tasks that still

have to be done in the field

EDDL Protects InvestmentEDDL is an independent standard– EDDL files for new devices are

compatible with old Windows and SP

– New Windows versions are compatible with EDDL files for old devices

– New version of device management software is compatible with EDDL files for old devices

The EDDL-files continue to work

43

Operating System Independent- Not Affected by Windows Upgrades

EDDL files are unaffected by operating system upgrade, service pack, or patches– New versions of Windows can be adopted

sooner– EDDL files continue to work– Investment is protected

5.3

EDDL reduces cost and time by not

requiring new files to be obtained when

operating system is patched or upgraded
