THE latest AXYZ International open house held at the company’s main UK facility in Telford was attended by a larger than expected number of existing and potential new customers.

They represented a diverse range of industries in which CNC routing/cutting is an essential production requirement and for which AXYZ International remains a preferred supplier.

Senior management personnel and members of the AXYZ technical team were in attendance to demonstrate the latest advances in CNC routing, cutting and engraving technology embodied in the company’s primary AXYZ and Pacer series of machines.

These included the latest version of the hybrid Trident combined routing and knife-cutting system that has enjoyed huge success by enabling AXYZ customers to diversify into new markets and create vital additional revenue streams.

A particular attraction was a new waterjet cutting machine that is now being stocked and distributed in the UK by AXYZ International.

It follows acquisition by the parent company in Canada of US-based WARDJet which, for many years, has been a pioneering influence on the evolution of waterjet cutting technology.

The importance of this development was highlighted by the presence at the event of co-founder of WARDJet, Richard Ward, who provided a wealth of information on the benefits of waterjet cutting and how it complements and expands the capabilities of companies currently using traditional CNC routing/cutting systems.

‘Entry into the waterjet cutting sector was a logical step

to providing a wider choice of machining solutions and, in particular, those that meet the requirements of customers using materials, which traditional CNC routing/cutting systems are unable to process effectively,’ says UK managing director of AXYZ International, Mark Sweeney.

‘The synergy of the two companies will greatly enhance AXYZ International’s foot-print in a wider range of industries, adding some 100 experienced employees to the combined workforce and underpinning our plans for further expansion,’ adds UK-based vice president (market development), Robert Marshall.

VPK Ltd has built up an excellent reputation for the quality of their work since the company was established 10 years ago. Each contract is given the personal attention that it deserves and the company uses the highest quality machinery to achieve the best finish possible.

VPK has a production facility in Waltham Abbey in North London, which combines the latest FORMAT-4 CNC technology with top-of-the-range CAD Software used

alongside with a number of industrial machines from the Felder Group.

‘The robust machinery we bought from Felder is perfect for the amount of high end, bespoke projects we undertake as a company. The accuracy of each machine allows us to give the care, attention and detail in the craftsmanship that each project deserves,’ says workshop manager, Nick Bohdanuk.

In 2013 VPK purchased the company’s first Felder machine - a FD 921 dowel boring machine and since then a further 10 machines have been purchased from the Hammer, Felder and FORMAT-4 ranges trading up for improved machinery as the business continues to grow.

Currently VPK’s workshop is a perfect 710 edge-bander, a kappa 400x motion sliding table panel saw, profit H10 and H22 CNC machining centres all from FORMAT-4, as well as the F3 spindle moulder from the Hammer range. Nick continued

‘We purchased the H22, so that we could make panel and door sets and because of the CNC training we received from Felder, which couldn’t be better, we can now produce them

and so much more! By the end of our four-day training course, we knew the machines inside out. It has helped us produce everything a lot faster,’ continues Nick.

With the company’s extensive knowledge in the internal fit-out sector and vast investment in machinery and software VPK prides itself in being able to manufacture either high production runs, or more intricate one-off bespoke items.

A SPECIAL software application enables a cabinet and door manufacturer to load its Cabinet Vision Screen-To-Machine files into Alphacam for nesting purposes.

The production process also involves another stand-alone macro written by Cabinet Vision engineers, which merges two CSV files – one containing drawing information and one with secondary operations – which are then imported into Alphacam for cutting.

Summerbridge Doors Ltd produces a range of cabinets and cabinet doors, principally for kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms and studios, along with the static leisure home industry and housebuilders.

Now operating with around 120 employees

at their factory in Hull, the company has supplied vinyl-wrapped cabinet doors for 25 years and expanded into full cabinet production in 2012.

The company also offers a sub-contract service, creating doors and cabinets for design companies that don’t have their own manufacturing facilities.

In total, several thousand cabinet panels/week come out of their Cabinet Vision design and Screen-To-Machine programme and are imported into Alphacam for nesting on Biesse Rover machine tools.

Technical manager, Nick Kersey explains that as the company’s Winstore automatic loading system has a database of offcuts, as

LINKING CABINET VISION & ALPHACAM WITH A SPECIAL SOFTWARE APPLICATION

well as using full sheets, they needed a special application to nest products designed in Cabinet Vision on to the offcuts.

‘We use a software add-on callled GPA, which looks at the Winstore database to see what material is available,’ says Mr Kersey.

Export files are created in Cabinet Vision and the GPA system then produces Alphacam drawings and a CSV output, which is loaded into Alphacam for nesting.

‘When we’re working on a new job, we’ll set up the room walls, drop in the required MFC cabinets and edit them to the exact specification. Then we define the materials and include a job reference, together with all the information that Alphacam needs.

‘Cabinet Vision’s Screen-To-Machine centre will then create two outputs – firstly, the Alphacam drawings, including operations and a CSV file containing all the information related to them.

‘The other output is for secondary operations, such as end drilling for our Skipper machine. This will be in the form of CIX and CSV files,’ adds Mr Kersey.

‘It’s at this point that we use the macro to merge the two CSV files and import them into Alphacam,’ explains Mr Kersey.

All relevant paperwork, assembly sheets and drawings are then printed from Cabinet Vision. The next step is to launch the GPA program in Alphacam, import the CSV file and process it through nesting and cutting.

Nick Kersey says that the overall integration between Cabinet Vision and Alphacam is seamless, producing accurate cabinets first time, every time.

Cabinet doors are manufactured from MDF and then wrapped in vinyl, or laminated with acrylic. Summerbridge Doors has a standard range of around 40 designs and 90 colour variations and the company is also often asked to produce customised one-off orders.

Production is handled entirely in Alphacam, giving capacity for the company to ship up to 25,000 doors/week.

The process is made even faster with Alphacam’s Automation Manager, which enables files to be batch processed, from file preparation right through to applying tool-paths, with NC codes generated automatically. In addition, Automation Manager can create a full report structure, along with labels and bar coding, if required.

In total, the company has 10 CNC machine tools driven by Alphacam and Cabinet Vision, including 3 three-axis SCM Ergons, each with two tables and an X-axis with two independent heads, a small point-to-point Biesse Skill, two Biesse Rovers and a Skipper drilling machine. Two of the CNC machines form part of a manufacturing cell, which also includes a beam saw and the Winstore storage and loading system.

Nick Kersey says that they have used Alphacam to produce their doors for many years and find its nesting function to be invaluable.

‘We’ve got a couple of experienced programmers using it and others are now learning it as well. Its ease of use for producing a 2D drawing and applying tool-paths works very well for us…the add-on packages are simple and robust but, for us, the nesting engine is key,’ explains Mr Kersey.

He adds that when Summerbridge Doors expanded into full cabinet production they assessed several software options, but Cabinet Vision was the only one that “ticked all the boxes” for a quick and easy way to meet their requirements.

‘We’ve continually invested in new technology and machinery and, as a result, our delivery times are now between five and ten days - among the best in the industry!’ proclaims Mr Kersey.

A SPECIALIST woodworking workshop in London has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to reduce waste disposal costs and provide free heating for the business.

The London Art Workshop in East London is an established workshop, serving the creative industries, including artists, galleries, designers and retailers with its range of fine art furniture for retail and visual merchandising.

A move from Hackney to Leyton required the business to review its heating needs. Its original Hackney workshop had low ceilings, so was easily heated with standard gas heaters.

However, the new, larger workshop had no heating, so the company needed to find a cost-effective solution.

Although the employees took to wearing several layers of clothing in winter, their hands were always cold, as wearing gloves just isn’t practical whilst manufacturing.

They were also filling a skip with wood waste each week, so a wood waste heater seemed a great solution to both problems.

Reading about the benefits of wood waste heaters and their ability to save companies money on waste disposal and heating, the team contacted Wood Waste Technology to find out more about converting wood offcuts into energy.

After speaking to managing director of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft and arranging a site survey, London Art Workshop ordered a WT5, which was installed earlier this year.

The business now burns all its wood waste, so its waste removal costs are minimal and the new heater keeps the space warm.

As an additional bonus, the new heater is also creating a tidier work place and saving space as, previously, all the waste would pile up around the factory whilst waiting for disposal. Everyone thinks it’s a win-win solution!

Apparently, word is now getting around the industrial estate about London Art Workshop’s wood waste heater, so some of the neighbouring businesses have asked to drop off some of their wood waste.

As a result, the team at London Art Workshop will no doubt be recommending these other businesses to talk to Wood Waste Technology in the near future.

The management at London Art workshop is delighted that they chose Wood Waste Technology as their supplier, as they say that, from the initial point of contact right through to installation, they have been a fantastic group of people to deal with. Whatismore, the heater is easy to use and totally reliable.

Now, the London Art Workshop is benefiting from being able to convert all its wood waste to heat, as the wood waste heater provides a free, environmentally friendly facility to heat the factory, whilst saving the company vast amounts of money on waste disposal fees.

The company has also purchased a summer heat dump, to allow the waste wood to continue to burn throughout the summer, by sending the heat direct to atmosphere.

‘We’re delighted that we could help The London Art Workshop lower its operational costs by saving money on

A WIN-WIN FOR SPECIALIST WOODWORKING WORKSHOP

heating and waste disposal,’ says Woodwaste Technology’s Kurt Cockroft.

Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs.

As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, instalation and on-going maintenance for new units, the company also

services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60 per cent cheaper than other suppliers.

In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision-engineered shredders and briquetters, available in various size and specifications to suit all business applications.

CABINET hardware expert, Titus has launched a new service dedicated to helping manufacturers of ready-to-assemble (RTA) kitchen furniture make their products faster and easier to assemble, thereby enhancing customer perceptions and boosting sales.

The ground-breaking Titus CAF service uses a simple formula, developed after painstaking research by Titus, to assign a Consumer Assembly Friendliness (CAF) score to items of furniture.

This not only allows ease of assembly to be accurately quantified, but also reveals areas where improvements can be made, often at little, or no cost to the furniture manufacturer.

The Titus CAF Score takes into account the total number of parts needed to assemble an item, the number of actions it takes to assemble the parts and the number of different types of parts.

Scores can be produced for complete items of furniture, for sub-assemblies and even for components themselves, allowing simplicity of assembly to be examined at every level.

The new Titus CAF Service will help kitchen furniture manufacturers to calculate the scores for their own products, or can even

calculate scores on behalf of the manufacturer. In either case, the service will also provide detailed recommendations for improvement.

A typical recommendation might be to replace a conventional dowel-and-cam connection with a single-part integrated connector.

This would reduce the number of types of parts needed and also the number of actions needed to assemble the parts, so this small change would provide a significant reduction in the CAF score.

Titus is offering its new CAF Service to all manufacturers of RTA furniture, whether, or not they are existing users of Titus products.

W18 AND ELEMENTS SHOW REPORT

WITH over 9,200 visitors in attendance at W18 & Elements, this represented a 4 per cent increase in visitors compared with the figures for 2016.

There were over 250 exhibitors and 2018’s co-located shows saw a foot-print of over 20,000m2 being utilised by stand holders. An Increased number of overseas visitors was also reported.

With the biggest foot-print and the largest number of exhibitors to date, this year’s W Exhibition and sister show, Elements, have been hailed as a huge success by visitors and exhibitors alike.

The increased number of people attending the UK’s only woodworking machinery and materials exhibition, along with a large number of overseas visitors from Europe and further afield, has confirmed the show’s status as being a must-attend event for the furniture design and manufacturing industry.

The four-day event, which will move to Halls 18, 19 and 20 in 2020, due to increased demand for stand space, saw a plethora of new machinery and products being introduced at the show.

This year, there was a distinct shift towards intelligent machinery, with new concepts being introduced for today’s furniture manufacturing industry.

Italian machinery manufacturer, Biesse, focused on its automated, interconnected production concept “Automaction”. The Viet Opera R sanding system – one of several machines in the range designed to increase automation and overall equipment efficiency – also won an “Elements of Innovation Gold Award” at the show (see our front page).

Felder’s very latest H80 CNC nesting machine with fully automatic loading and unloading of up to 100 boards at a time and full nesting capabilities in three and four axes, made its debut at the show and proved popular with small- to medium-sized manufacturers.

SCM UK’s Digital Hub and Maestro Digital Systems also drew in the crowds.

Live machinery demonstrations, interactive spray booths and virtual reality tours were also in abundance at the show, with stands finding unique ways to promote their latest product offerings.

Competitions and daily challenges were also the order of the day for many with Quin Global UK’s nail biting ‘L12 Curve Challenge’ proving a huge hit with visitors, as they attempted to make the tightest curve possible using their L12 adhesive on bendy plywood.

There were also a number of interactive stands this year, as exhibitors set out to entice visitors to explore the latest innovations for themselves.

From Blum’s very own ‘Blum Cinema’ - complete with popcorn – which featured a movie on the company’s training services, support software and assembly devices, to ArtiCAD’s unique virtual reality tour, that transported you into a fully-equipped 3D kitchen in a bid to educate users on everything from the initial design to construction of a kitchen, visitors were offered new and exciting ways to learn

about the products which were on offer. Visitors were also free to explore the exhibition’s growing

number of interactive zones, including The Education Zone, which was introduced to allow visitors one-on-one sessions with industry experts.

The Elements of Innovation Awards, gave visitors an opportunity to see the most ground-breaking products to enter the UK market up close.

‘We are very pleased with the success our exhibitors have had at this year’s event. It’s also been great to see increased visitor numbers and a wider visitor audience, as we’ve been committed to creating two shows that truly benefit the UK’s furniture design and manufacturing industries,’ says event director, Lisa Campagnola.

‘We’ve also welcomed a larger number of overseas visitors, which is due in part to the number of European companies we’ve had join the exhibitor line-up this year,’ she adds.

‘We’re also pleased to announce that both the W Exhibition and Elements will be moving to Halls 18, 19 and 20 in 2020 to make room for even more exhibitors. Re-booking has been phenomenal, with many companies increasing their stand size and many new companies wishing to exhibit.

‘I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in the W Exhibition and Elements and I look forward to welcoming the industry again to the Birmingham NEC in 2020,’ she concludes.

Here’s what the W Exhibition and Elements exhibitors and visitors thought of the show: Managing director, Felder UK Ltd, Matthew Applegarth:

‘The show has been brilliant for us. We’ve sold almost every machine on our stand and at least two thirds of our showroom.

We still have orders to work though and we have produced some fantastic leads - this is what we have come to expect from exhibiting at the W Exhibition.

‘Every year our stand is growing bigger, because the return is there for us. In 2016 our stand was 600m2. We increased this by 50 per cent for 2018 and we have already provisionally booked over 1000m2 for 2020,’ says Mr Applegarth.Managing director of Biesse UK, Steve Bulmer:

‘The show has been a great success for us this year and our decision to invest in a larger stand has been a good one. It’s been our best show ever. We were also immensely proud to win the Elements of Innovation Award for our Viet Opera robotised sanding machine.

‘We are also celebrating our 25th anniversary in the UK, so it’s been great to see both new customers, as well as those that we have been working with since the UK subsidiary was founded,’ says Mr Bulmer.Managing director of Ferwood UK, John Wilson:

‘The show has been good for us. We’ve constantly been talking to customers – including some of the biggest names in the UK – so the calibre of visitors has been very high indeed,’ says Mr Wilson.Managing director of SCM UK, Gabriele De Col:

‘We’ve been really pleased with this year’s show and the feed-back we’ve received from visitors. Demand to see our latest machines and new digital system in action has been very high. We now have to follow up on the success of the show,’ says Mr De Col.Managing director of TM Machinery Sales, Matt Pearce:

‘The W Exhibition has always been an important event for us. The foot-fall on our stand has been continuously high throughout the show and the interest we’ve received on our range of Striebig vertical panel saws and ALKO dust extraction systems has been strong. We’ve already booked our new stand space for the 2020 event,’ says Mr Pearce.

What one visitor said: Group operations manager of the Decorative Panels Group, Phil Dalton:

‘Not only do we get to see some excellent new machinery coming to market, but the W Exhibition provided a great opportunity for us to network with our customers, suppliers and fellow industry professionals,’ says Mr Dalton.

The W Exhibition and Elements 2020 will be taking place from September 27-30 September at the NEC, Birmingham.

THE W Exhibition and Elements official charity partner, Help for Heroes, has raised £1,217 at this year’s leading woodworking machinery and materials show and dedicated furniture components show.

The charity, which offers support to those who have suffered life-changing injuries and illnesses whilst serving our country, teamed up with the four-day event for a second time to promote awareness and to raise money for its much needed woodworking shops and recovery centres.

‘I’d like to thank everyone for the immense support they gave us during the W Exhibition and Elements. The support received from the event organisers, exhibitors and visitors was overwhelming and together we raised £1,217 in donations,’ says Central England area fundraising manager for Help for Heroes, Dean Williams.

‘This is thanks to bucket collections and donations from our amazing Band of Brother craftsmen, sales of desk tidies and tool boxes, together with raffles which took place at the show.

‘We’ve also had a huge amount of support for our Phoenix House woodshed and we’ve received offers of new tools, equipment and financial support.

‘A special mention should also be given to Axminster Tools & Machinery for their loan of tools and lathes; Didac Training College and Trend for making and selling desk tidies and tool-boxes on behalf of Help for Heroes plus Masterwood UK for raffling off a wooden model of a dinosaur at the show,’ says Mr Williams.

‘When we talk about a “force for good” this is what we mean. Everyone really pulled out all the stops to ensure that Help for Heroes was extremely well represented. It really made our recovery team stand out and attracted visitors,’ concludes Mr Williams.

‘It has been a great honour to have Help for Heroes as our official charity for a second consecutive show. It’s been a privilege to meet some of the people whose hard work and dedication has made this happen and to be able to promote the amazing success stories that have come from the charity’s wood workshops and recovery centres,’ says event director for the W Exhibition and Elements, Lisa Campagnola.

LEADING woodworking machinery manufacturer, Biesse UK, has won the Elements of Innovation Gold Award for its unique Opera R sanding machine at this year’s W Exhibition and Elements.

Part of the company’s new “Automaction’” concept, which brings automated, inter-connected production manufacturing processes to the woodworking industry, the new Opera R has been designed to offer a greater sanding consistency and a higher continuity of output on flat panels and Shaker doors.

Controlled via a 15in touch screen, the new Opera R has succeeded in reproducing sanding processes that were previously only achievable through manual methods. This has resulted in the elimination of human error, reduced production costs and increased efficiency, leading to greater productivity.

‘This machine is an industry first and we believe it will revolutionise the way the industry works. Automation has huge potential in the woodworking sector, but is yet to be fully utilised. We hope our machines will change this,’ says product area manager for Biesse, Giacomo Mariotti.

‘The Opera R sanding machine – partnered with a collaborative robot that offloads the doors – offers quality, safety and consistency during the sanding process,’ says Mr Mariotti.

‘It’s simplified the cycle and, as a result, the return on investment is almost immediate. It’s a versatile machine – it can be used as a stand-alone unit, or in a production line – and we have a number of options to accommodate a wide range of applications, including a model that features two robots and two conveyer belts to double productivity,’ he adds.

‘We’re offering new solutions to the woodworking industry and it’s fantastic to be recognised by our peers.

‘We are proud to be at the forefront of innovation and we will continue to create exceptional solutions that will benefit our customers and help them succeed,’ he adds.

‘Automation is an exciting area of growth in the woodworking industry and it is fascinating to see how this kind of technology can increase productivity and efficiencies in the sector. Biesse’s innovative Opera R was a worthy winner,’ says independent judge and course leader at Buckinghamshire New University, Paul Lighterness.

Opera R is the robotised sanding machine that is unique, offering levels of machinability, precision and quality never before obtained with the technology of this sector.

It offers the freedom to machine the panel “with the grain” in any operation, increasing the number of contact points to produce ultra high quality surface finishes.

The new Opera R technology can machine elements with different levels, such as the

inner side of profiles, five-part doors, rebates and window frames. Control Force is a patented system, which is located inside the robotic unit and intelligently measures the amount of abrasive pressure applied to the panel.

With every attention to detail, the Viet range of machines includes the E.S.S. system, which allows for energy savings of up to 30 per cent with regard to both electricity consumption and C02 emissions.

It represents a perfect combination of Biesse technology and Italian genius. The Opera R is one of the Viet range of machines, which represent a perfect

AFTER many months of hard work and organisation the 2018 W Exhibition has been and gone for another 24 months.

Masterwood GB would like to thank everyone who made it possible, including Dimensions, Fercell, Print Monster and Masterwood’s own dedicated staff and technicians.

However, the biggest thanks go to all those who visited the stand to look at new machines and software, together with the many existing Masterwood customers who came along to tell us how their CNCs are still working every week, even though some of these machines are now over 20 years old.

This certainly bears witness to “Masterwood, how they are built to last”.

The new Masterwood “Made In Italy” look was reflected on the stand with clear viewing panels allowing great views of the machine demonstrations from all angles.

Featured on the stand was a Project 485L, a full five-axis pod and rail CNC, which was producing a “Masterwood Trophy”

Masterwood’s W18 stand was completelyempty of visitors before the Sunday morning opening, but certainly did not remain that way for long!

Masterwood decided to donate the wooden dinosaurs being produced on its CNC machines to the “Help for Heroes” charity, who took donations and drew a winner each day.

with intricate carvings of the world engraved, along with a dedication to Birmingham. This showed the delicate and smooth movements of the five-axis to its full potential. It drew in a good crowd of viewers every time it was demonstrated.

Accompanying the five-axis CNC was a MW1538M, a heavy duty “nesting” machine, which was running a nested “dinosaur”. The finished product became the centre of attraction, once Masterwood’s technicians found the correct way to assemble it and was in great demand. The machining showed how intricate and small parts could be machined to high accuracy, so that each piece slid together with the correct fix.

Finally, Masterwood had a Project TF100-2 CNC drilling machine on the stand. This was fitted with a full vertical & horizontal drilling head, plus a router with automatic tool changing.

Various demonstrations were run on this machine showing the full range of possible operations of drilling and routering. The most popular demonstration was the picture panels that were Vee carved to look like famous landmarks, or film stars. These were taken from photographs and generated into machine programmes in a matter of minutes.

All the demonstrations were programmed with Master 3D, Masterwood’s own software for three-, four- and five-axis machining, showing how quick and easy it is to turn complicated work into programmes for both today’s and

yesterday’s CNCs.With so much demand for

Masterwood’s “dinosaurs”, it was decided to donate them to “Help For Heroes” who took donations and drew a winner each day. Masterwood thanks everyone who donated to this great cause and trust that the winners have given the dinosaurs a good home.

‘HOW can your products make my business more productive and efficient?’

‘How can your software tools help me to fully exploit my significant investment in CNC equipment?’

Those were just two of the questions woodworking companies were asking the staff at Vero Software at W18 last month.

In addition, casework manufacturers wanted to know how to bridge the gap between design and manufacture which, in the past, have been separate from each other.

With Alphacam’s powerful automation and nesting functionality answering those first two questions and Cabinet Vision’s Screen-To-Machine module closing the loop between sales and manufacture for casework manufacturers.

Visitors to the show also saw first-hand the software in action, driving a variety of CNC machine tools on machinery suppliers’ stands.

During the four days of W18, Cabinet Vision and Alphacam

between them closed many sales, as well as gaining hundreds of strong leads, many of which were looking to invest in the software in the short to medium term.

EMEA sales manager for Cabinet Vision and Alphacam, Michael Pettit says that visitors were particularly interested in Alphacam’s new nesting engine, unveiled in the 2018 R2 release, which tests show delivers significant improvements in material yield.

‘Using proprietary technology to deliver “best in class” geometry and tool-path optimisation, the nesting engine provides faster calculation times, along with improved feed-back and graphics,’ says Mr Pettit.

‘Customers are also moving away from having to program individual parts for their CNC production and were impressed when they saw demonstrations showing how Alphacam’s latest automation tools in Automation Manager can reduce programming time by several days each week,’ adds Mr Pettit.

Cabinet Vision demonstrated its latest release, which includes all-new photo-rendering technology that provides a considerable enhancement in rendering capabilities from previous versions.

‘It now gives manufacturers almost photo-like images, which they can use as a sales tool to show their customers exactly

what the products will look like in situ,’ explains Mr Pettit. And Cabinet Vision also partners with a number of machine

tool suppliers, providing a total machine and software solution.‘W18 gave us the opportunity to meet new customers and

gain significant leads. ‘It was also good to catch up with existing customers, many

of whom have been are our customers for many years and hear their stories about how our market-leading solutions for the woodworking industry have driven productivity and profitability in their businesses,’ concludes Mr Pettit.

W18 AND ELEMENTS SHOW REPORT

THE W18 show emphasised that 2018 has been a strong year for innovation within the woodworking industry. Homag certainly echoed this theme, as the company demonstrated its latest innovations.

‘The W shows are always the highlight of the calendar for the UK woodworking industry and this year’s show was no different,’ says managing director of Homag UK, Simon Brooks.

‘The general vibe at the show was extremely positive and we are pleased to have taken a high number of orders,’ he adds.

‘The main message on the Homag stand this year was that we are a “one stop shop” for all manufacturers. As amply demonstrated on our stand, we are clearly positioned to offer complete production solutions, from start to finish, for entry level through to industrial-sized manufacturers,’ says Mr Brooks.

ONE of the main attractions on the Schelling stand at W18 was the Austrian woodworking machinery manufacturer’s fh4 cut-to-size panel saw.

The fh 4 is the cut-to-size saw is ideal both for those demanding craftsmanship and for the industrial production company. It combines the complete know-how and typical quality features of Schelling.

Schelling UK Ltd enjoyed yet another successful show at W18. The Schelling fh4 cut-to-size saw on show was displayed alongside a Barbaric LCV feeding system, a Votecs shredder with industrial inline magnet for metal detecting, ducting by Norduct and a filter by Modesta.

Visitors to the Schelling UK stand were left impressed by the Barbaric LCV feeding system, which displayed smooth, fast and easy feeding directly into the Schelling fh4 cut-to-size saw.

The Barbaric feeder demonstrated how it can load either single sheets in longitudinal, or head cut positions straight on to the roller table of the fh4, then push the book, or single sheet up against the aligners in the roller table before proceeding automatically with the cutting pattern.

The number of boards and their loading direction are easily selected from the cutting patterns created by Schelling HPO optimisation on the Schelling FH4 saw control of the machine.

The Barbaric LCV feeding system, which is renowned for offering custom-made systems built with simple yet high-

quality components, also provided ample demonstration of the simple operation and the seamless linking to the Schelling Software.

Other benefits of this system include low-space requirements for those with restricted space and physical relief on production workers, due to the automated nature of the feeder.

Schelling also showed off Votecs’ EZ 6/1 shredder, which is claimed to be unique in the industry, due to its exclusive features for veneer shredding.

Special features of the Votecs EZ 6/1 include:

• Segmented floors.• Special cutting knives.• Veneer adapted rotor speeds.• A special screen for veneer

shredding.The main feature on the

Schelling UK stand was a demonstration of the Schelling fh4 cut-to-size saw. As with all of Schelling’s machines, it maintains the highest precision possible over the entire service life, plus it has what is claimed to be the highest

level of automation in its class. At W18 Schelling was proud to show off how this saw offers

maximum precision coupled with speed and flexibility to process cuts of both individual and multiple panels.

Visitors to the stand watched the impressive demonstration of the saw’s varied automatic settings and automatically monitored functions, and were shown a few of the special features of the saw with autospeed and the double side aligner/dual strip aligner.

The dual strip aligners (one before and one after the saw line) remain on the material during the cut to ensure maximum angular precision.

The alignment force, along with various other saw settings, adjusts automatically to the material thickness, or package height with the aid of a frequency converter, with the result that even thin panel strips can be cut and aligned with a high degree of precision.

…And for those who were seeking a little refreshment, there was always the chance to grab a cup of frothy cappuccino coffee, served up in a cup designed to show off Schelling’s contact details and those of its trading partners … even if the cake specially designed and baked to mark Schelling’s recent centenary had long since been consumed and enjoyed!

AT W18 Weinig and sister company Holz-Her showcased their latest technology and innovations in solid wood and furniture production.

Spread across three very busy stands, Weinig offered something for everyone, from the hugely successful “Word Search” Cube Plus to the very affordable Powermat 700 Classic, as well as advanced technology as demonstrated by the company’s Digital OptiControl and Moulder Master software.

‘W18 was a very successful show. We saw both existing customers and new ones considering their next production investment. Our long understanding of the changing needs of solid timber processing and partnership mentality makes all the difference,’ says managing director of Weinig UK, Malcolm Cuthbertson.

Weinig’s ProMaster range of heavy duty CNC solutions offers almost unlimited possibilities in five-axis machining. Constructed for highly demanding work, the robust, solid and well-thoughtout construction Weinig’s ProMaster CNCs represent the latest in modern and application-friendly industrial design.

For Holz-Her, the Nextec furniture solution was the show-stopper: a complete package comprising machine and specially designed craftsman-friendly software.

A few simple clicks and the push of a button and the Nextec creates and labels each component for your selected cabinet. Manufacturers can hit the ground running without programming; choosing from up to 300 cabinets from Nextec’s intuitive Cabinet Select software. They can decide how many they want, select the material and connection hardware and then they will be ready to go.

Modifying or customising any item in the library, or even adding your own cabinet is just as simple. The software is designed to enable people who are not skilled in programming to produce furniture, or even an entire kitchen, easily and quickly and you can begin manufacture from the first day the machine arrives.

A key feature in making panel processing more efficient is Holz-Her’s DirectCut. This laser-supported high-speed cutting can turn material remnants into valuable furniture components. The optional two-line laser enables an operator to easily cut one-off pieces to your chosen size, without any programming.

Operating just like an automated panel saw, DirectCut gives genuine value to otherwise wasted off-cuts. DirectCut enables useful table saw functions, potentially saving precious floor space and costs.Holz-Her’s zero glue line solutions: without the hassle

From the smallest Holz-Her edge-bander to their largest production solution, each comes with Holz-Her’s unique and award-winning Glu Jet system as standard, catering for every size and type of business.

Be it high gloss, or solid wood edging, the system is both flexible and versatile and comes with a three-year warranty, thus providing the perfect guarantee for glue line management.

This is industrial technology for all – you can now process PUR glue as standard, but without the hassle. As the benchmark for professional cabinet makers, most manufacturers would use PUR, but not all machinery can cope with it.

With the Glu Jet ready to use in under four minutes with EVA, or PUR, Holz-Her’s unique system has proved time and time again that it is the right solution for any edge-banding requirements.

With the new Holz-Her Lumina series comes the option for the LTronic system – the laser edging unit from Holz-Her, which is claimed to be unbeatable in terms of speed and cost efficiency.

The NIR (Near Infrared Radiation) module in Holz-Her’s LTronic unit transfers heat energy quickly and precisely to the specific point required, making it ideal for activation of function layers on laser edging.

Available in edge heights up to 45mm, the modules are ready to use as soon as you switch them on – there is no heat-up time, or any heat-up phases during the machining process. The complete system operates absolutely silently; a huge advantage over noisy, costly to run hot air systems.

At W18 Holz-Her also demonstrated its incredibly strong and highly in demand Sector 1255 wall saw and the company demonstrated its classical machines expertise with its market leading partner, Hofmann.

Every machine from the Weinig Group comes with reliability, quality assurance, after-sales customer support as standard.

LAST month Weinig opened its factory gates for the 23rd time for the world’s largest in-house exhibition for solid wood processing

Under the motto “THINK WEINIG”, the market leader presented an attractive combination of cutting-edge technology that could be experienced up close, together with brand-new industry information in Tauberbischofsheim.

Guests from all over the world arrived at the three-day live show for machines, systems and system technology.

Distributed across several locations on over 3,000m2, more than 40 innovative solutions across the entire value chain were on display for professional visitors.

InTech 2018 also had a world premiere to offer: the new Powermat 3000 represents the essence of the continuous technical innovation, which has made Weinig moulders the most successful in the world.

Its possible application range is from simple four-sided planing to structured surfaces and, soon, even to contour milling. Precisely matched to the application, it achieves first-class surface quality both at low feed speeds and high feed speeds of up to 100m/min. With the modularly designed “all-rounder” it is always possible to design the process economically.

In addition to its core competence in planing and profiling, Weinig occupies an outstanding position in the production technology for wood and wood/aluminium windows.

InTech was particularly focused on

networked window production. All current window corner joints and the latest window systems were demonstrated live on various Conturex models.

Additionally, customers were able to inform themselves about current trends from the window market. This included topics in the field of material combinations, such as wood/aluminium, wood/wood, interior/exterior colour combinations, blocking and glass bonding in wooden windows.

With the help of VR animation technology, a Weinig high performance window line becomes a 3-D experience.

Weinig is currently enjoying a growing market share in pallet production with its cutting solutions. One of these successful concepts could be seen at InTech.

This system was delivered to Perusch Paletten in Austria following the in-house exhibition. One of the central components is an OptiCut S90 Speed.

The fast push-feed saw is equipped with a diagonal chain feeding system with extended infeed chains. It is designed for cross-sections up to 300mm x 100 mm.

The machine includes an automatic waste chute. For sorting there is an output for special lengths and orders as well as two pusher stations. The system also has an inkjet printer for part identification.

The simple processing of orders is guaranteed by the OptiPal packaging software. A robotic concept for stacking the workpiece packages is integrated into the overall system. The system is designed for a production of up to 1.4 million pallets/year!
