Indus World Schoolfrom

Career LauncherNurturing Careers for 20 years now

Dear Parents,

It gives me immense pleasure to welcome you and your child into the Indus family. A few years back, when we started the first Indus School, the world had already stepped into the 21st Century. Our thoughts and ideas were already impacted with the newness which comes with the start of a new millennium, a new era. Hence, it will not be unfair to say that Indus is truly a newborn of the 21st Century, just as your child is.

Our core educational values are based on age old precepts of education, but have been moulded to meet the challenges of the 21st century. In our view, when our children grow up and enter into adulthood, they must be prepared to face life ahead of them. A lot of choices we make in our schools’ policies and methods are shaped by the view we hold of the future ahead of us. Let me elaborate what some of these beliefs are:

1. The aim of life is to work joyfully and find happiness in everything you do. The aim of education must be to impact not just the mind of the child but also the heart of the child. We have to, therefore, work on the entire personality of the child which includes knowledge and emotions. This is the Indus approach to holistic development of your child.

2. Each child learns in his/her own way and style. We must be patient to allow the child to learn at his/her pace.. The child's natural curiosity has to be preserved and the child's self esteem has to be carefully nurtured and not harmed through excessive disciplining. This is the Indus way of child centric approach to development.

3. The 21st Century society and workplace is going to be more democratic and less authoritarian, more flexible and more open. The Indus children have to grow up to be self-directed, responsible and open minded citizens who will fit in well with the 21st Century workplace. The culture of Indus schools has to reflect these values.

4. The 21st Century is expected to be driven by technology and hence the democratization of knowledge. Factual knowledge will be commonly available and is not going to be the difference between success and failure. The winners of the 21st Century will be those children who showcase creativity, innovation, learning, entrepreneurial skills and people smartness. The children of Indus have to be prepared for this new world and our teaching practices will deliver these skills and attributes.

I must conclude but not before elaborating on ROOHI, our core values. The core values of our organization are Risk Taking, Openness, Ownership, Honesty and Commitment to our customers and Innovation. Indus will remain true to these values. We will interact with teachers, parents and children in an open and authentic way and show great ownership for the tasks we take up. We will take risks and innovate. We will fail once in a while but we will never give up and will do so with complete honesty and commitment to our children.

Our School Environment Real learning stems from nurturing curiosity and fearlessness inseeking answers. To facilitate this, we create an atmosphere thatis warm, friendly and supportive to children.

Our teachers are not authority-wielding figures for children butfriendly mentors and guides who ensure that the classroom isan emotionally safe space where children can dig deeper andtake risks with their imagination and blossom without any fearof being judged.

Learning Stages at Indus

At Indus, the Pre-Primary classes and Classes 1 and 2 are called the Ananda phase.

In Pre-Primary, we follow a thematic approach. Through themes such as seasons, animals, gardens and festivals, children learn various subjects like plant science, animal science, mathematics and languages. Field visits, audio visual aids and theme based activities provide exposure to children by inducing joy in learning. Sports, music, dance, art and craft are also given significant importance to augment the child’s physical, social, emotional development and creativity.

In classes 1 and 2, along with themes, subject based learning is also catered with equal importance.

"We are thankful to the entire school fraternity for

mentoring and nurturing our son in a commendable manner. We have seen him

grow and learn at a good pace and feel fortunate

that our child is a part of IWS, Pune. We admire

the school's child centric concept and are great fans

of it. Keep up the good work."

Early Age English Language Learning

Indus uses widely acclaimed international practices such as JollyPhonics™ from Jolly Learning Company, UK for teaching theEnglish language to young children. Our goal is to make children independent readers by the age of five.

Foundations of Mathematics

Indus aims to impart Mathematics education to children by eliminating any fear of the subject. We do this by using mathematical toolkits called Jodogyan, puzzles and games to introduce conceptual clarity and make Math interesting and relevant to children’s lives.

See this video to know more about Mathematics teaching http://www.indusworldschool.com/videos/maths

"After joining IWS, my children got an exposure

to new ways of teaching - learning. At IWS, everything

is done practically – it is not just about reading the

chapter and writing questions and answers. They see, they

do, then understand and finally write the answer and

make notes. The way in which mentors teach is fabulous!"

and Vaibhav Arora, Grade I,IWS Ludhiana)

Music, Arts, Craft, Drama and Sports [MACDS]

In the Ananda stage, 60% of the time is allocated to activities which develop emotional, physical and creative intelligence. Music, Art and Sports are not considered extra-curricular at Indus and they are an integral part of each day. We believe that exposure to art and aesthetics is central to the development of a child's body and soul.

Developing Good Habits

At Ananda, children are introduced to social skills like courtesies and politeness. They then move onto more complicated activities like grooming, organizing their work, cleanliness etc. To the children, these are meaningful activities that involve caring for themselves, others and the environment and becoming more independent.

Project Based Learning Nurtures Curiosity

At Indus, classes 3 to 8 are categorized under the Jigyasa phase. In these classes, children get exposure to learning through projects such as creating stories and story books, designing musical instruments, making a drama script, designing a vehicle or creating a webpage. Such projects encourage students ot do research and learn by asking questions.

Early Age IT Curriculum

From Class 3 onwards our children use Scratch TM, a programming language developed by MIT Media Lab. As children create their own stories and animations and share their creations on the web, they learn to think creatively and work collaboratively.

"First of all thanks a lot Indus for building

confidence and bringing a smile on my daughter’s

face. Indus is truly a school which takes

complete care of every child. Let it be sports,

music, dance or acads they take full pains to

groom kids and bring out their best. I really feel that

my kid is in safe hands where they can avail the

best knowledge. There was a time when I wanted Arushi to speak about the

whole day's experience and there was one answer

“Accha Gaya” but now when I ask her she has

so much to say that I tell her “ek shabd me bolo na

baba “Accha gaya”. This difference in the addition of joy, excitement, sense

of responsibility and loving oneself is entirely due to

Indus. Once again thanks to all of you."

Discipline : Goal Setting (IKT) and Quality Circle Time (QCT)Indus World Schools across the country have a very strong track record of outstanding student discipline and behaviour.

Our unique approach of treating students with dignity and respect is at the foundation of this environment.

Quality Circle Time (QCT) is based on the promotion of self-discipline and self-esteem. Students learn and understand the consequences of their behaviour and begin to take on responsibility for themselves and their immediate and wider community.

Students set their own goals and review their own progress with their teachers. These build habits of self-management and personal effectiveness.

Indus believes in preparing children for the world throughscientific career guidance and stringent test preparation fromClass IX onwards. During this phase, called Sadhana, we focus on disciplined effort towards reaching a goal.

“When we selected this school for our daughter Gaurja, around 3 years

back, we were wondering whether we have made the

right choice. But soon we were pleasantly surprised

when we found her improving in self confidence

and public speaking and interaction with other children.

The school environment has made her excel in

various fields. She has won a number of prizes in Olympiads, Music, Arts &

Craft competitions and Academics.

She is developing into a very humble and confident

person for which I am thankful to the school and

staff.

Evaluation andExamination SystemIndus World Schools are based on the Central Board ofSecondary Education (CBSE) curriculum.

At the beginning of each academic session, there is typically a Baseline Assessment in each major subject to help the teacher understand the learning levels of the class. Throughout the year, we follow the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system for all classes, as prescribed by the CBSE. Our assessment systems are designed to test understanding and not simply the ability to reproduce facts.

We have a two term academic year where the report card is handed out at the end of each term on the day of Parent Mentor Interaction (PMI) .

CCE Assessments at Indus

Pre-primary to Class 5

The assessment is based on activities, written worksheets and oral assessments. Assessment happens 4 times in a year in pre-primary classes and 6 times in a year in classes 1 and 2. The subject performance is described by breaking up the subject into multiple skills and each skill is graded on a 3 point scale. Our mentors prepare a comprehensive and continuous detailed profile of each student, keeping track of his/hergrowth and progress.

Class 6 Onwards

The assessments are based on a set of Formative and Summative Assessments (FA and SA). Formative Assessments (FAs) are typically topic based monthly assessment in the form of written quizzes, oral tests, discussions, projects etc. Summative Assessments (SAs) are written tests held at the end of the two-terms. The report cards include the results of the Formative and Summative tests. A 10 point grading scheme is followed in the report card.

“It's just been two quarters since our daughter got

admission in this school, and in such a small span of time, so many good things

came around. Let's first start with PMIs in which we

as parents learn how they are teaching our child. This creates a synergy between

the school's and parents' teaching. The celebration of

English week was another such event which involved

parents with the children by storytelling - a very unique approach. Another unique

feature is the teacher's visit at to the student's home. This is an amazing way to understand the behavior of the student as a child,

and strengthens the bond between them Children and

Teachers. The education at IWS is wholesome, and

helps inculcating knowledge as well as values."

Technology at Indus Educational Tabs

Indus has introduced specially designed Educational Tablets which allow students to carry a learning device with them to the classroom. These tablets are loaded with a large number of videos and provide access to question banks for practice for most subjects. Indus schools use Edu tabs from grade 4 onwards.

Compass Box

Compass box is an in-house developed Online Assessment Platform which provides a 24x7 learning zone to students. Compass Box comprises over a thousand tests and tens of thousands of questions which have been carefully vetted by Indus teachers and provided for practice. Periodic online tests allow teachers to identify specific learning issues for each student and the class as a whole on a real time basis and take corrective actions, as required. Digital badges and Leader boards encourage students at the school and at the class level.

Indus is one of the first schools in India to have implemented Google Apps for Education, a uniquely 21st century experience in collaboration and communication for students, parents and teachers alike.

Highly controllable and secure, Google Apps for Education allows the school environment to be kept Ad free, Spam free and absolutely safe for children.

Google Drive

• Enables students to access Homework /Circulars/ resources 24x7. • Enables academic sharing amongst teachers and students across schools

Google Mail and Groups

1. Helps students to connect among themselves and with mentors 2. Helps to create Special Interest Groups

Parents as PartnersIndus expects deep commitment from parents in this journey.Parents are an integral part of our curriculum and areexpected to support and encourage the child.

Indus Learning Series – Parent Workshops

Parent Development Workshops are organized to improve parents’ role in their child’s learning process. Some of the workshops in the Indus Learning Series are:

• Find the winner in your child• How to get your child to cooperate without conflict• 21st Century learning skills• Careers after school• Target IIT

Home Visits - A Unique Indus Practice

Every year our teachers make home visits to strengthen the bond between school and parents. These visits help our mentors understand the children better by knowing more about their environment at home.

What our Parents have to say

As a learning organization, we constantly strive to improve ourselves. Each year we conduct surveys among our parents to find out their views about the school.

The detailed survey results are as follows:

No. Questions %

1 My child feels safe at this school. 97%

2 The school communicates with parents effectively. 92%

3 My child enjoys going to this school. 96%

4 The overall quality of education my child receives at this school is good. 93%
