Entertaining is the essence of the

hospitality business, says Deluxe

Chef Jeremy Duke

Are you entertaining a trip abroad?

We have a few suggestions for a

memorable holiday.

Welcome to the fi rst issue of Indulge for 2014, and congratulations on

making it through another winter.

I, for one, couldn’t be happier that it is

now spring in the Lower Mainland – at least

according to the calendar – and am very

much looking forward to longer days, warmer

temperatures and more frequent appearances by

the sun.

Of course, I’m well-aware that anyone reading

this outside of B.C. – or even outside Metro

Vancouver – would probably come after me

with pitchforks gleaming. After all, it has been

a season full of brutal weather for the prairies,

eastern Canada and the Maritimes.

But the relief that comes with the start of

spring is about more than just weather – it’s

about feeling revitalized at the signs of new life

sprouting up around you, looking forward to a

hot summer full of fun and getting out of the

house after several months of quasi-hibernation.

So what better time of the year to celebrate the

people, the places and events that entertain us

here in the Lower Mainland?

Knowing that we’ve got a huge pool of talent

in our own backyard, Indulge is profi ling some

of the community’s hottest entertainers, from

some up-and-comers to keep an eye out for, to

entertainment veterans.

We take a trip to one of

the city’s entertainment

destinations – Granville

Island – to showcase some of

spring’s hottest fashions.

Our food writer Jason

McRobbie explores a tasty

hot spot on White Rock’s

popular East Beach, with delicious results.

We look at some ways of creating the ultimate

in a home entertainment space, as well as offer

tips of where to travel if you’re craving a little

extra culture on your holiday.

And our wine writer, John Schreiner, shares his

insight into celebrity-owned wineries around

the province and beyond.

On a personal note, the excitement of

springtime is a little heightened this year for

me and my family, as we are welcoming baby

number two into our household.

As I will have my hands very full with a new

little one, plus an energetic two-year-old, I’m

pleased to be handing Indulge over to Terry

Farrell, who will be running the show for the

next year.

I look forward to seeing some of the great

stories that Terry will be sharing on the pages

of Indulge in the coming months – until then,

enjoy our spring issue, I hope it keeps you

thoroughly entertained.

While locals have long come to White Rock’s East Beach for the fi sh, chips and view — all of which

hold their charms — chef Jeremy Duke had always been entertaining something a bit more upscale, or “Deluxe,” on the strip.

For the past fi ve years, his vision has found a warm embrace at the aptly named Deluxe, just one door away from where he fi rst stepped into the kitchen at age 15 at Moby Dick’s Fish and Chips.

And while Moby’s remains a solid lure to the waterfront, Duke’s take on fi sh and chips is decidedly different — house-smoked sockeye salmon served with baked yam and beet chips — as is every ‘classic’ dish that

spins out of his busy kitchen in the 90-seat Deluxe.

With a fi rm focus on fun, Duke and Deluxe are fi nding favour with fresh fl avours and twists on tradition at every turn. Phyllo wrapped mashed potatoes, anyone? Seriously good fun and as fi ne a dining destination by night; the lunch crowd is brisk.

Part sleek lounge, part patio and a wholly-intimate, ocean-view dining room atop, Duke’s homage to tradition holds to the ethos of innovation throughout, drawing foodies from near and far.

Underpinning it all is a grounded appreciation of what matters most—the guest experience.

For Duke, entertaining is what life has been

all about, so unsurprisingly, he has a healthy

stock of tips for home cooks – tips that

continue to serve him well, day and night.

“For starters, you have to give yourself a

chance to shine like a rock star,” he says. “And

that begins with giving yourself the luxury of

time. All that takes is a bit of thinking ahead,

gathering your ingredients with simplicity in

mind, and getting as much of the work done

ahead of time as possible.”

A quick glance within Duke’s kitchen

confi rms he very much practises what he

teaches: His mise en place for our Indulge visit is prepped and immaculate. Not only do

the white ramekins of assorted slice and dice

bear the measured uniformity of a pro, the

presentation actually begs one to get cooking.

“Entertaining is supposed to be fun for the

guests and the hosts alike. If you’re stuck in

the kitchen the whole time that is not going

to happen,” he says with a glance at his prep.

“This way, the real work is done, the stage is

set and you get to make magic by bringing

it all together with a few quick fi nishing

touches.”

Bearing in mind that Duke holds court with

as much comfort from behind the bar as in the

kitchen, he brings the same

ethos to crafting cocktails.

“Keep it simple and

uncluttered. My idea of

a perfect recipe is one

where there are just three

ingredients and you can taste

them all. That’s where the

magic happens.”

With over two decades of

‘entertaining’ experience

under his belt, he knows

of what he speaks. As past-

president of the Junior

Chapter of the BC Chefs

Association, he achieved his

Red Seal certifi cate and went

on to explore every facet

of restaurant operations.

Whether previously working his way up

through the Earl’s group, apprenticing with

the esteemed chef Bruno Marti or crafting

opening menus for other people’s dream

restaurants, chef Duke has never been more in

his element than at Deluxe—almost.

“I am really looking forward to summer. I

love working with fresh fruits,” he says with

a somewhat wistful look at a shoreline yet

fringed in snow for our February shoot. “The

sunshine is what people really fl ock here for,

so we try to keep a bit of that year ’round.”

As a chef, he appreciates the sustenance

offered by winter ingredients, but his heart is

fi rmly fi xed on the seasons ahead.

“For me, spring is summer. Once it arrives,

everything is just that much more available.

We have our local

suppliers and always think

local, but that is more of

a challenge in the winter

months.”

Of course, there is

also the fi ne, local,

house Pinot Noir to be

savoured year ’round,

compliments of Langley’s

Vista D’oro Farms and

Winery. Their tie to that

particular bottle and

winery stems both from

a mutual appreciation

and the efforts of one of

their staff, who works

alongside winemaker/

co-owner Patrick Murphy

to bring their bottles an added authenticity

of experience. Deluxe already has three more

tons of grapes on order for next year’s vintage.

Regardless of season, thanks to an inspired

vision, a committed team and an ongoing

series of Wine Club Dinners, the Deluxe

treatment has never been so within reach of

the beach in White Rock.

Remove 1 whole or 2 tails lobster fl esh from shell. Simmer on stovetop in butter for 10 minutes on lowest heat setting (170 F)—or boil in the traditional manner. Remove and chill.

In a mixing bowl combine avocado, sour cream, cumin and lime juice—mash until smooth. Add mango, pineapple, jalapeño, green onions and cilantro—fold gently until fully incorporated. Season with sea salt to taste.

To make the crispy tortillas, bring 1/4 cup olive oil to 350F on stove top in frying pan.

1 oz. espresso (or strong coffee)1/2 pint raspberries1/2 cup water1/2 cup sugar1/2 kg semi-sweet chocolate1 cup whipping cream

Preheat oven 300 F. Melt the kilo of chocolate and butter in double boiler, stirring occasionally until smooth.

Set up your mixer with the paddle attachment and mix egg yolks, sugar and vanilla at medium speed for three minutes. Slow down the mixer, add the butter/chocolate mixture, and espresso; continue to mix for fi ve minutes.

Line cake pan base with silicone paper and butter sides. Pour torte mixture into pan carefully and bake at 300 F for 40 minutes. Use toothpick method to test for doneness, as nothing should cling or ooze when you remove the toothpick. Cool to room temperature, then refrigerate. Once chilled, remove from pan.

To make the raspberry sauce, in a small pot, simmer the raspberries, water and sugar until raspberries start to dissolve. Cool, then blend until smooth in food processor.

To make the raspberry ganache, melt the remaining 1/2 kilo of chocolate in the double boiler together with whipping cream and four Tbsp of the raspberry sauce. Stir until smooth, then cool to room temperature before spreading evenly over the torte.

Store in refrigerator and serve at room temperature, drizzling atop with a bit more raspberry sauce, and served with ice cream or gelato.

Star power

by Terry Farrell

Celebs aboundon the Peninsula

INDULGE • Spring 2014 13

T he Lower Mainland arts and entertainment talent pool getsdeeper at every turn.

It’s no wonder. With Vancouver being widely regarded as “Canada’s Hollywood,”it’s the place to be for fl edgling and renown celebrities alike.

From homegrown talent, to adopted sonsand daughters, there is never a shortage ofstar power in Vancouver and area.

In this issue of Indulge, we caught up witha few of the community’s personalities.

Greyston Holt takes a bite out of TV

There's a rising star in our midst, and he

can be seen on Space channel.

Twenty-eight-year-old Greyston Holt

has landed his own television series.

The Calgary-born, Salt Spring Island-raised

actor has the lead role in Bitten, a show based

on the fi rst book of Canadian author Kelly

Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld series.

Holt plays Clayton Danvers – a werewolf.

It's somewhat of a full circle scenario for

Holt, whose fi rst role in front of the cameras

was in the 2004 teen horror fl ick Sisterhood, a

movie about vampires.

"Yeah, a low-budget, cheesy horror fl ick, but

it got me started," said Greyston of Sisterhood,

his fi rst "big break" in the industry.

To say acting has been

a lifelong dream of

Greyston's would be

a stretch. It wasn't

even on his radar

until he was on the

verge of adulthood.

“I guess I fi rst got

into acting in my

senior year of high

school. I needed

another credit in arts

so I took a (drama)

course. It kind of

grew from there. I

had done a little bit

of modeling growing

up, but nothing other than that.”

After fi nishing high school, he moved to the

Lower Mainland to pursue his career.

His mom, Nancy, followed shortly thereafter,

moving to White Rock where she owns and

operates the boutique store, She's Some Kind

of Wonderful.

“I never pressured him into anything – I’ve

always been supportive of whatever he has

done,”’ said Nancy. “The acting, he sort of just

fell into it. He entered a contest and won top

adult talent for acting and so from there, we

just pursued that avenue. He did a little from

Salt Spring, for about a year, then I said ‘OK

you need to go to the Mainland to pursue this.’

I was behind him all the way.”

Greyston, who already has three dozen

movie and television roles on his resume,

credits his agent, Kathy Carpenter (KC Talent),

with landing him what he calls the biggest role

of his career to date.

“She’s great,” he said of Carpenter. “She put

together a package and sent it off to Toronto

and we got the call. From the fi rst

contact to getting the role,

the whole process took

about a month and a

half.

"Defi nitely, having

the lead in a series,

this is the highlight

of my career so far.

Hopefully it leads

to bigger things

yet."

Greyston said

that although he

was unfamiliar with

the Armstrong series

prior to auditioning

for the role, he became

intimately acquainted with

story as soon as he heard he was to be

involved with the show.

“It's not really my kind of read, but once I

was cast I read the book and it was a real page

turner. I got through it in no time," he said.

The 13-episode Season 1 covers the entire

plot of Bitten.

The television writers are already working

on a second season of Bitten, which Greyston

says will follow Book 2 of the Women of the Otherworld series (Stolen), at least to a certain

degree.

Greyston said he would return as Clayton

Danvers, if asked.

“Oh yeah. It's been a great experience."

Bitten can be seen Saturdays at 6 p.m. on

Space.

Dear Rouge climbing the charts

If you haven't heard of Dear Rouge by now,

turn on your radio.

The Surrey/Vancouver-based duo –

comprising the husband-and-wife-team of

Drew and Danielle McTaggart – is one of the

hottest up-and-coming acts on the Canadian

music scene and all indications are that the

best is yet to come.

Dear Rouge is taking the Canadian airwaves

by storm, with its latest single.

“We just found out (in February) that we

are No. 6 on the Canadian rock-alternative

charts,” said Drew. “It just keeps growing. It

has already far exceeded our expectations.”

Dear Rouge’s debut album is slated for

release later this year.

The album's fi rst single, I Heard, I Had, is

the one currently making all the noise on the

music scene. The plan is to release a follow-up

single, Best Look Lately, in the coming months,

then release the album.

“It will be our fi rst full-length album,” said

Drew. “We have done a couple of EPs, which

are three- or four-song demos, per se. We are

hoping to release the album sometime this

summer. We don't have a lock-down date yet.”

The McTaggarts can only hope that Best Look Lately draws the same kind of attention as I Heard I Had has done.

14 Spring 2014 • INDULGE

“It’s been really amazing to see Canadian

radio jump on it,” Drew said of I Heard I Had.

“Right across the country, all the way to

Halifax, there are stations in every city playing

us. So it has really been helping the band out,

especially on the East Coast. And now it’s

starting to make its way into the States, too.”

The upcoming album is not only a

progression in length, but also in the product

itself.

“People can expect to hear something that is

more mature and deeper than our (previous)

stuff, but it’s still

very much who

we are,” Drew

said. “We have a

song on it called

Black to Gold

(tentative title

track) and that's

a song that we

are really proud

of and we can’t

wait to show

people.

“Ultimately,

with a full

album, you have

a longer amount of time with the listener,

so you can try different things. Whereas the

four-song EPs we put out are kind of quick,

this has (more to it). I like to compare it to

a longer conversation. We get to do deeper

songs, slower songs. l try some different stuff,

because we will have 10 or 11 songs on the

album.”

The McTaggarts’ musical infl uences are

varied.

From the mainstream, such as Beck, to the

upbeat sounds of Phoenix, to Australian folk

band The Middle East; an eclectic array of

sounds that lends itself to a wider spectrum

of creativity when it's time for Drew and

Danielle to put their own notes on paper.

There are also some Canadian infl uences.

“Metric, I have always really liked, and I

really enjoy Sam Roberts’ new album, so we

are defi nitely infl uenced by a lot of

different sounds,” said

Danielle. “But I would

say that the closest

sound for us in

our own personal

music is The

Killers and The

Yayas… and we

get compared to

(American duo)

Phantogram quite

a bit.”

Drew and Danielle

have known each

other for many

years through mutual

friends, but music and their similar creative

ambitions are what brought the two of them

together.

“I was in an indie-rock band, and Danielle

was in a singer/songwriter-type with a solo

project,” refl ected Drew. “My band wasn't

doing much and Danielle, with her singer/

songwriter stuff, I could see she is a really

energetic person. So I was like ‘we have to

make a higher-energy sound – a more pop-

rock, in-your-face-type music.’ So I convinced

her to come out to Vancouver to try a song.”

The project – and the couple’s personal

relationship – blossomed from there.

The band is currently on a one-month,

10-city tour, playing 300- to 500-seat rooms,

reaching audiences from Vancouver to

Montreal.

A gig at a Vancouver Canucks game – playing

pre-game and intermission for the fans –

ranks among the band's highlights to date.

“I called my mom and told her that I could

totally get used to this – playing a rock show

in front of 18,000 fans,” said Danielle.

They are on the right track.

Harvie becomes two-faced for TV

Ellie Harvie is relishing her latest role, as

antagonist Candace Wheeler in the new

teen comedy Some Assembly Required.

It’s a chance for her to show off her greatest

asset: comedy.

After playing the “straight man” role, as

Morticia, in The New Addams Family, this new

role is pure escapism for the South Surrey

actress.

“I get to do all the stuff that I watched

Gomez and Uncle Fester do,” she said in a

recent interview with Indulge.

“When I was Morticia I just stood there

and watched those guys … doing the sword

fi ghting and fl ying in on lines and it was, like,

‘I want to do that’. So in this show it’s hilarious

because I get to fall into net traps and I get

pies in the face, and I get to do all the crazy

stunts and nutty stuff that happens to the

goofy adult. It’s pretty fun.”

Fun, and a far cry from the typical career

associated with Ellie’s post-secondary

education.

She moved to Vancouver to pursue an acting

career after attaining a political studies degree

at the University of Manitoba – not exactly the

line of work one would immediately link to

such a degree.

“I didn’t come from a show-biz family

– I always wanted to do it, but university

education was always really important to

my mother so I knew I had to get something

under my belt, and a theatre major was not

even an option back then,” Ellie said. “The

last year of (university) I took some theatre

classes… and it was really up my alley. My prof

at the time, George Toles, told me I should

audition for the (Vancouver) Playhouse so I

did and I got in.

“Had he not said that, I would probably be a

lawyer. So I have him to thank.”

It’s been really amazing to see Canadian radio

jump on it. Right across the country, all the way to Halifax, there are stations

in every city playing us. –Drew McTaggart Katie Yu

In more ways than one. Not only was Toles

responsible for Ellie getting into acting to

begin with, her start in improv was a key in

landing the role of Candace Wheeler.

Some Assembly Required (Mondays, 6:30

p.m., YTV) is a show about a teen owner

of a toy company. Jarvis Raines (played by

Kolton Stewart) is awarded the company in

a court ruling, after a lawsuit over a defective

chemistry set. Candace Wheeler is the former

owner of the company, who will stop at

nothing to ensure Jarvis fails as its new head

honcho.

“Candace is the main character, then she

disguises herself as the cleaning lady to

sabotage the company,” explained Ellie. “It’s

a completely different character – I have to

wear full prosthetic makeup and a fat suit,

and she doesn’t speak English. She speaks

gibberish. When we were at auditions,

all us actresses were in the waiting

room and everyone was nervous

about that, but what served me well

was my background in improv,

with the Vancouver Theatre Sports

League, where gibberish

scenes were an every-night

occurrence. So I wasn’t

at all self-conscious. That’s

probably what helped me get

the gig.”

Her television-sitcom

experience couldn’t have

hurt, either.

Ellie looks back fondly

upon her days as Morticia

Addams, and says that

television show provided her with the

high point of her acting livelihood to

date.

“It was probably my biggest role,

and probably the highlight of my

career was when John Astin (Gomez

in the original Addams Family) came

in to do an episode and was kissing my arm as

Morticia. I was just, like, ‘what is happening?’

It was pretty great.”

From humble beginnings, to humble

expectations. Now, with nearly 100 fi lm and

television credits to her name,Ellie says her

career has exceeded any and all expectations

she had, going in.

“Oh beyond, so far beyond,” she

said. “Remember the show A Christmas Story?

There was a scene where the boy was

crawling up the slide to Santa, and there

are elves on either side of Santa, saying

‘get lost, kid’. One of those elves

was a woman and I remember

thinking that if I could just do

that, just that minor role, I would

be so happy. That’s really all I

was aiming for, and I have well

surpassed it. So I am pretty lucky.”

That’s not to say she has any

plans for retirement yet. One of

the best things about an acting

career is that, as long as you have

your wits about you, there will be

work available.

“Oh, and even then; you don’t need

your wits,” she said,

laughing. “Puh-lease.

Have you seen

some of these

people? Did you

watch the Oscars?”

Touché.

Katie YuAbove, Ellie Harvie as Mrs. Bubkes, the cleaning lady. To the right, Ellie in her most notable role to date, as Morticia Addams.

Daniel Wesley livin’ the life of a rock star

Daniel Wesley is living the dream –

the rock 'n' roll dream, that is.

“I am really lucky to be able to

do this, every day,” said Daniel in a recent

interview with Indulge. “I am doing what I love

to do – making music – and am really lucky to

be able to turn it into a career.

“There are still some days where I struggle to

be comfortable with it..., with accepting the

fact that this is my job and sometimes you're

just kind of hanging out. It's a weird kind of

thing but I know there are hundreds of people

out there that would trade spots with me so

they didn't have to work nine-to-fi ve.”

He knows a little about the nine-to-fi ve

grind. The 32-year-old Lower Mainlander

was an electrician prior to making the career

change.

Daniel was born in White Rock and moved

to Langley when he was fi ve. He moved back

to White Rock in his mid-20s and recorded

his fi rst couple of albums there. It's not all fun

and games, but the down times for Daniel are,

more and more, by choice.

His latest album, Ocean Wide, was released

in April 2013 and after nearly a year of

festivals, interviews and promo gigs, Daniel is

just now getting some long awaited and well-

earned family time.

He and his wife Melisa recently enjoyed their

fi rst Christmas as parents, with their son Finn

(born in March, 2013) and the family just

returned from a three-week winter escape to

Hawaii.

And now, it’s back to ‘the grind’, as it is,

with his regular accompanists; bassist Darren

Parris and drummer Tim Proznick. “At the

beginning of January I was in the studio for a

week with the guys and we laid down about

half an album of material….

I’m probably going to hit the

studio right away now and

record some more material.

No hard deadline on when

we will release that, but we

will likely release it separately

– part of it in the summer,

part of it in the fall. But we

will defi nitely have some new

music out this year.”

Daniel’s early music, (i.e. Ooo-Ohh) has a

defi nite reggae infusion to it, but his most

recent releases have more of a straightforward

rock edge. Fuel to Fire, from the Ocean Wide release, has been compared to the sounds of

the Goo Goo Dolls and Sam Roberts.

Daniel said he is not tied to one genre.

“My music… each album is like its own iPod

of music – a real myriad of music. Yes, there’s

reggae stuff but three's also stuff that really

rocks,” he said. “I just let each album be its

own thing.”

As his career progresses, the opportunities

expand for Daniel. He worked with well-

known Canadian musician and producer

Gavin Brown for a couple of tracks on Ocean Wide and looks forward to working with other

Canadian music industry icons

in the future.

“It was fun,” he said of his

experience with Brown. “He’s

a very respected Canadian

producer and it is neat to work

with guys like that. You just

soak up everything he had to

offer.

“There are a lot of good

people out there who have

been making records and music for a long

time, and I have a long list of people who I’d

love to work with. You pick up things from

everybody.”

If there is a drawback to Daniel’s life (and he

realizes that the word "drawback" is relative)

it's that success comes at a price – a price that

will only rise as Daniel's celebrity grows.

“If there's one down side to the industry, it's

the time I have to spend away from friends

and family,” he said. "My son was only 10

days old and I had to leave for a three-week

trip. That was really hard, and that was only a

short time. It would be great to start touring

all over the world but I think that would be

really diffi cult. I don’t know if I could be gone

all the time.”

Daniel said he’s learned to take the bad with

the good, and if that’s as bad as the bad gets,

then, well, it’s pretty good.

“If you get to do something every day that

you love … that’s pretty awesome. I don’t ever

want to take that for granted.” i

Ask the Residents…

Advice from people who live in the Royale Peninsula Retirement Residence

Dear Residents: What is the best way to introduce my grandmother to a residence? She is very social but I think a tour at a fi rst visit would be overwhelming to her and turn her off of the whole idea. – Sarah H.

Dear Sarah: There is a lot of information imparted during a tour that is diffi cult to retain – it is very understanding of you to consider a different approach for your grandmother. For many people, it is not the layout of the building, but rather the impression they have of the residence atmosphere or culture that

helps them to make a decision. Other family members can take on the role of exploring the amenity spaces in advance and share that information with your grandmother, but for her introduction you may want to ask the marketing director to coordinate a visit with a few welcoming residents over tea. Ask that this be planned during a quieter time in the residence so she is not overwhelmed with the activity during a larger event. We suggest you limit this to just the social visit, and make a follow up appointment to view the suites and building with your grandma on another day. – the Residents #34–3033 King George Blvd., Surrey

Entertaining GetawaysFrom Okanagan wine tours to the Russian ballet, vacation ideas for all tastes

A week or two spent relaxing on a warm,

tropical beach sounds like a pretty

sweet vacation – especially on the heels

of a long, chilly winter.

But while sipping on margaritas and working

on your tan will make for a rejuvenating

holiday, it might end up being a little lacking

in the entertainment department.

If you prefer to spend your time away from

home living it up, taking in everything a

destination has to offer and embracing the arts

and culture scene of your holiday spot, Indulge

has compiled some suggestions – near and far

– of where to plan your next entertainment-

fi lled vacation.

Okanagan Wine Tour Just a few hours outside of the Lower

Mainland lies Okanagan wine country,

offering the perfect blend of beautiful scenery

and tasty wines.

Whether you have just a day to spend

exploring these breathtaking wineries, or want

to spend a few days immersed in the world

of wine country, there are several well-known

tour groups in the area that offer a range of

guided tours in various parts of the Okanagan.

Some of the most famous wineries in the

region include Mission Hill, Quails Gate,

Sumac Ridge, Tinhorn, Creek, Burrowing Owl

and Hawthorne Mountain.

And if you’re in the area during the warm

summer months, you can squeeze in your

requisite beach time after all – the region

is home to several of the province’s most

popular lakes, including Skaha, Okanagan and

Kalamalka.

Las Vegas While the Sin City has a reputation for

being a place to go and ‘let loose,’ so to speak,

there is much more to this tourist spot than

excessive drinking, gambling and questionable

behaviour.

The amazing array of talent that takes to the

various casino and theatre stages along the

strip is impressive, to say the least.

From iconic names in the music business –

currently headlining are Celine Dion, Shania

Twain, The Jacksons, Rod Stewart and Meat

Loaf – to hit Broadway musicals including

Jersey Boys and Rock of Ages, the toughest part

of your trip will be narrowing down the list of

what to see.

Not to be missed is one of the several

breathtaking Cirque du Soleil shows.

Currently enjoying successful runs are The

Beatles LOVE, Michael Jackson ONE, Mystere,

KA, O and Zumanity.

This spring will also see a number of well-

known magicians holding court in Vegas,

including Criss Angel, David Copperfi eld and

the hilarious duo Penn and Teller.

New Orleans While one of the main tourist draws to New

Orleans, Mardi Gras, took place earlier this

year, there are still many entertaining reasons

to visit this city on the Bayou any time of year.

A riverboat tour along the mighty Mississippi

in a historic paddlewheeler is a great way to

take in some of the scenery of the city.

Music is a huge part of life in New Orleans,

and at almost any hour of any day you can

fi nd live jazz, brass bands, Creole and zydeco

beats streaming out of clubs in the city.

Among some of the most iconic live-music

venues in the city are Tipitina’s – which has

seen the likes of Dr. John, Willie Nelson

and the Neville Brothers grace the stage, –

Preservation Hall in the French Quarter – a

must-visit for jazz lovers, – and the Maple Leaf

Bar, which hosts funk, zydeco and blues seven

nights a week.

One thing is for certain if you’re visiting

the Big Easy – you will want to bring your

appetite. From fi ne-dining restaurants to

historic cafés scattered around the city, the mix

of local cooking styles in New Orleans creates

distinctive Creole and Cajun dishes you won’t

fi nd anywhere else. Jambalaya, crawfi sh and

gumbo are some of the classics, but if you’re

adventurous enough you can even fi nd some

fried alligator or fried pig’s ear.

Russia’s Bolshoi TheatreFor an experience that is sure to be a little

more ‘high-brow’ – plus a lot further from

home – a trip to the Bolshoi Theatre in

Moscow, Russia ranks quite high on the list of

global entertainment stops.

Regarded as one if Moscow’s biggest tourist

attractions, the Bolshoi Theatre was opened on

October 20, 1856 to celebrate the coronation

of Tsar Alexander II.

In recent years, it has undergone some

major interior reconstruction, including the

refurbishment of its main stage, and today

hosts a variety of popular opera and ballet

performances, featuring the most talented

performers from around the world.

Upcoming features on the playbill include

the ballets Giselle, Don Quixote and Spartacus,

and the operas Boris Godunov, The Enchantress

and La Sonnambula.

Celebs into B.C. winesThe surprising announcement last

month that fi lm director James

Cameron (Avatar, Titanic) has acquired

Vancouver Island’s Beaufort Vineyard & Estate

Winery spotlights the small but rising number

of Canadian celebrities in the wine industry.

Cameron, who was born in Kapuskasing,

Ont. in 1954, has

pursued most of

his remarkable

fi lm career in the

United States, but he

remains a Canadian.

He actually applied

for American

citizenship once

and then withdrew

it when George W.

Bush was president.

He also lives in New

Zealand where Avatar was fi lmed and

where in 2012 he bought 1,000 hectares of

farmland (dairy, walnut trees).

Cameron has yet to disclose his plans

for Beaufort, a well-regarded winery near

Courtenay. He has installed a manager

but he is also keeping the founders on as

winemakers, at least through the next vintage.

The entire Vancouver Island wine industry

should get a major lift from Cameron’s

celebrity even if, as seems likely, he will

continue to live in New Zealand more

than in the Comox Valley. In 2007, the

Nielsen organization surveyed

supermarket wine sales in the

United States and noted a 19

per cent rise over just a few

years in purchases of wines

from celebrity brands.

Last year Andrew Peller Ltd.

launched the Wayne Gretzky

Okanagan brand in British

Columbia (several years

after launching it in

Ontario). The brand has

been a major success, as

much due to No. 99’s

name as to the quality

(which is good).

A recent check of the

Liquor Distribution

Branch’s website shows

that there are about

9,000 bottles of the four

Gretzky wines in LDB

stores.

The other Canadian celebrities involved

in wineries here include actor Dan Ackroyd

(wineries in Ontario and Sonoma), golfer

Mike Weir (with a winery in Ontario) and

actor Jason Priestley, one of the owners of

Black Hills Estate Winery, in Oliver, B.C.

Compared to wineries in California and

elsewhere, the Canadian industry is actually

lagging in attracting celebrities. Just one

hockey player?

Why has no one enlisted Trevor Linden as

a partner? In California, Valeri Bure, who is

Pavel’s brother and who played 621 games in

the NHL, now owns Chateau Boswell winery

in the Napa Valley.

Other entertainers in the wine business

include singers Madonna (Ciccone Vineyard

and Winery in Michigan), Olivia Newton-

John (Koala Blue Wines in Australia), Boz

Scaggs (Scaggs Vineyard in California) and

French actor Gérard Depardieu. He is a one-

man conglomerate with a chateau in the Loire

and vineyards elsewhere in

France, Argentina, Spain,

Sicily and the United States.

The advantages of

attracting more celebrities to

the British Columbia wine

industry are obvious.

They have the money to

invest; they are likely to

collect wines; and they

lift the profi le of their

brands and of the entire

industry.

There are currently

about 25 wineries

for sale in British

Columbia. I wonder

whether the owners

have searched their

customer lists for the

names of celebrities

who might want a piece

of the action, if asked.

Th e advantages of attracting more celebrities

to the British Columbia wine industry are obvious.

Th ey have the money to invest; they are likely to

collect wines; and they lift the profi le of their brands and of the entire industry.
