Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Republic of Singapore

Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam was appointed Deputy Prime Minister in the Singapore Cabinet in May 2011. He

continues to serve as Minister for Finance, a responsibility he has performed since December 2007. Mr Tharman

was appointed Chairman of the International Monetary and Financial Committee, the policy steering committee

of the International Monetary Fund, in March 2011. He was also admitted to the Group of Thirty, also known as

“The Consultative Group on International Economic and Monetary Affairs”, in June 2008.

He spent much of his earlier professional life at the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), Singapore’s central

bank and integrated financial regulator, where he was chief executive before entering politics in October 2001.

Since then, he has served in economic and education appointments, including five years as Minister for Education.

He is currently also the Chairman of the International Academic Advisory Panel that advises the government on

strategies for the university sector, and Chairman of the MAS. Mr Tharman did his undergraduate and masters

education in Economics at the London School of Economics and Cambridge University. He later obtained a

masters in Public Administration at Harvard University, where he received the Lucius N Littauer Fellow award

for outstanding performance and leadership potential.

Dr Chang Keng Wee is the current Master of the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia. He graduated from the University of Malaya in 1979 and subsequently obtained his Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow in 1983. He was awarded Fellowship of the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia in 1997. Dr Chang is a Consultant General Surgeon, with special interest in Upper GI and HPB surgery, at the Gleneagles Medical Centre in Kuala Lumpur. He is actively involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. He was Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Malaya Medical Centre until 1996. He is currently Adjunct Professor of Surgery in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the UCSI University in Kuala Lumpur and Honorary Consultant at the University of Malaya Medical Centre. He is Examiner for the Malaysian Conjoint Masters of Surgery and was examiner to the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland from 1999 to 2001. Dr Chang sits in numerous National Committees - the National Patient Safety Council, National Credentialing Committee of the National Specialist Register, National Conjoint Board for Postgraduate Medical Education and National Accreditation Committee on Medical Standards. He was President of the College of Surgeons of Malaysia from 1999 to 2000 and President of the Asian Surgical Association from 2003 to 2005.

Professor Donald Li is a specialist in Family Medicine in private practice, and the sole proprietor of Family Medical Practice in Hong Kong. He also dedicates much of his professional time to academia and teaching. Throughout his career, he has been a leading expert and ardent advocate in promoting better primary care and family health in Hong Kong, China and internationally. He is an active member of many Hong Kong governmental and public health bodies. Prof Li has been an invited speaker at numerous local, regional and international scientifi c meetings.

Prof Li is the President of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine. He was President of the WONCA Asia Pacifi c Region from 2007 to 2013, and newly elected Honorary Treasurer and member at large of WONCA World Executive Council. Prof Li is the Chairman of the Bauhinia Research Foundation, a leading think tank in Hong Kong and is active in community work being Chairman of the SHENG Kung Hui Welfare Council, an Honorary Steward of the Hong Kong Jockey Club and member of COSH.PRESIDENT

Professor Sue Bailey is a Consultant Child and Adolescent Forensic psychiatrist and Professor of Mental Health Policy in North West of England. Her research interests include development of needs and risk assessment measures for use with young off enders with mental illness, development of community and secure inpatient services for young off enders both nationally and internationally. As President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in the UK, Prof Bailey has worked with health and social care professionals, patients and carers to bring Parity of Esteem between mental and physical health, now enshrined in Primary Legislation in England.

Dr Alfred Belmonte is the President of the Philippine College of Surgeons. He is a practicing general surgeon and is a GS4 Consultant (Trauma) at UST Hospital and Quezon City General Hospital. Dr. Belmonte was elected to the Board of Regents after membership in the College’s Committees on Accreditation and Continuing Surgical Education as well as President of the College’s Metro Manila Chapter.

He holds the rank of Associate Professor III and is currently Chair of the Department of Surgery of the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Medicine & Surgery. He has been the Director of Clinical Programs and the Student Aff airs Offi ce Coordinator of the Faculty as well as President of the Medical Staff of UST hospital. Dr. Belmonte has likewise been appointed member of the Commission on Ethics of the Philippine Medical Association.

Dr Priscilla Caguioa is a Professor and Director of Medical Oncology at the Santo Tomas University Hospital, Manila, Philippines. She is also a Consultant in Medical Oncology and Hematology at the St. Luke’s Medical Center, Manila, Philippines. Dr. Caguioa graduated from the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Medicine and Surgery. She had her Residency Training in Internal Medicine and Fellowship in Hematology at the Santo Tomas University Hospital. She went to the Boston University Medical Center for her Medical Oncology Fellowship training and served concurrently as an Instructor in Medicine at the Boston University School of Medicine.

Dr Caguioa is a Member of the American Society of Hematology and American Society of Clinical Oncology and a Fellow of the International Academy of Clinical and Applied Thrombosis/Hemostasis. She was President of the Philippine Society of Medical Oncology from 2000 to 2002 and the Philippine Society of Hematology and Blood Transfusion from 2004 to 2006. She is a member of the Board of Regents and is currently the President of the Philippine College of Physicians.

Priscilla B. CAGUIOA

Dr Chow Pak Chin graduated from the University of Hong Kong in 1977 and received training in Ophthalmology in Hong Kong . He was awarded the “Li Po Chun Charitable Fund Scholarship” in 1985 and went to the UK for further training there for one year. Since 1989, he is the sole proprietor of Dr. CHOW Pak Chin’s Clinic. He also held Honorary posts in The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Honorary Clinical Assistant Professor), The University of Hong Kong (Honorary Associate Professor) and The Shantou University (Visiting Professor). He is currently the President of the College of Ophthalmologists of Hong Kong, President of the Hong Kong Association of Private Eye Surgeons and the Vice President of the Hong Kong Medical Association. Being a philanthropist, Dr Chow does a lot of charity works. He is the Founding Chairman of The Hong Kong Medical Association Charitable Foundation in 2006, and is still its Chairman. He is the Medical Director of The Asian Foundation for the Prevention of Blindness, the Vice-Chairman of The Project Vision and the Honourable Ophthalmologist Ambassador of The Sight First China Action which has done more than 5 million Cataract Surgeries in China. For these, he is awarded “The Prevention of Blindness Award 2005” and “The Distinguished Service Award 2010” by The Asia-Pacifi c Academy of Ophthalmology , “The Hong Kong Humanity Award 2007” by The Hong Kong Red Cross, and “The Hong Kong Loving Hearts Award 2012’’ by The Asia.

Dr Chow Yu Fat is a specialist anaesthesiologist qualifi ed in Hong Kong, Australia and NewZealand with interests in cardiac anaesthesia, trauma, sedation, simulation and medical education. Currently he is the President of the Hong Kong College of Anaesthesiologists and the Founding Chairman of the Resuscitation Council of Hong Kong.

Dr Chow is the Chief of Service of the Department of Anaesthesiology & OT Services, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Honorary Associate Professor of the Department of Anaesthesiology of the University of Hong Kong, the Chairman of the Central Coordinating Committee (Anaesthesiology), the Hospital Authority.

Dr Neil Dewhurst, President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (RCPE), is a graduate of the University of Edinburgh. After a clinical lectureship in the University Department of Medicine, he was awarded the Stelios Nicolaides prize by RCPE and the Carey Coombs prize from the University of Bristol. His Croom Lecture (RCPE 1984) addressed the problem of sudden death after myocardial infarction. He has been RCPE Registrar, Council member and was subsequently appointed Medical Director of the MRCP(UK) Examinations. Dr Dewhurst’s current academic research interests include assessment, methodology and reliability. He has received honorary fellowships of the Colleges of Physicians of North America, Australasia, Ceylon, Ireland, Malaysia and Hong Kong. He has been visiting Professor of Medicine and Cardiology to the University of Kuwait and a clinical examiner for the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Bangladesh and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Dr Dewhurst is Chair of Federation of the Royal Colleges of the Physicians of United Kingdom, Chair of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges Education Strategy Committee and has just completed a term as Vice-Chair of the Scottish Academy. He commenced a second term of RCPE Presidency in March this year.

Neil DEWHURST

Dr Francis Dunn is President of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, Consultant Cardiologist at Stobhill General Hospital and Honorary Professor at the University of Glasgow. He graduated in Medicine from the University of Glasgow and his Postgraduate training was at The Royal Infi rmary of Glasgow and in the USA. He was a Staff Member at the Ochsner Medical Institutions in New Orleans and was Assistant Professor of Medicine at Louisiana State University from 1980-83. He then returned to Glasgow as a Consultant Cardiologist at Stobhill Hospital. He was Clinical Director at Stobhill NHS Trust (1994-2000) and North Glasgow Hospitals NHS Trust (2000-2006). Dr Dunn has 150 publications and 15 book chapters principally in the areas of hypertension and coronary artery disease. He has received research grants from a number of national organisations.

Dr Dunn has served on the Council for the British Cardiac Society and the Scottish Cardiac Society. He is a Deputy Lord Lieutenant for The County of Dunbartonshire and Freeman of the Barony Burgh of Kirkintilloch. He was Vice President of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow from 2007-2010 and was elected President in December 2012.

Francis DUNN

Dr Ho Hiu Fai graduated from Faculty of Medicine, University of Hong Kong in 1986. He obtained his fellowship qualifi cation in Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Hong Kong in 1991 and 1993 respectively. He was admitted to the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine as a specialist in General Surgery in 1994 and Emergency Medicine in 1997. His special interest is in traumatology. Dr Ho was appointed as consultant of Accident & Emergency Department Queen Elizabeth Hospital in 1996 then Chief of Service of the same department in 1999. He was also co-chairman of the Central Committee on Trauma Service at Hospital Authority from 2005-2008. He was the chairman of the Coordinating Committee on Accident & Emergency Service at Hospital Authority from 2009-2011.

He is the current President of the Hong Kong College of Emergency Medicine since 2011. He is active in sports medicine and has been the overall medical command and advisor for the Oxfam Trailwalker event since 1996. PRESIDENT

HO Hiu Fai

As President, Professor John Crowe is the most senior College offi cer and leads the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI) on behalf of the Fellows and Members. He has also served as a Censor, Vice President and the Treasurer of the College until becoming President in 2011.

Prof Crowe qualifi ed in medicine from University College Dublin and from Trinity College with a PhD in physiology. His medical training was at the Mater University Hospital Dublin, University College Hospital Galway with Professor Ciaran McCarthy and then at the Liver Unit Kings College Hospital London with Professor Roger Williams. He was appointed consultant gastroenterologist to the Mater University Hospital in 1978 where he worked until 2011 in gastroenterology and as director of the Centre for Liver Disease. He was Honorary Consultant Gastroenterologist to the National Maternity Hospital from 1985 to 2010. He has a Newman chair from UCD. His research interests are in haemochromatosis and hepatitis C and he has over 200 international presentations and publications. Prof Crowe is a Past President of the Irish Society of Gastroenterology.

John CROWE


Associate Professor Michael Hollands is a General Surgeon at Westmead Hospital and Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery, Western Clinical School of Sydney University. He has post-graduate training in gastro-oesophageal and hepatopancreatobiliary surgery.

Assoc Prof Hollands was trained at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney and later at Royal Postgraduate Medical School and Guys Hospital, London. He then worked in Beth Israel Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston and Queen Mary’s Hospital, Hong Kong before joining Westmead in 1986.

He has Fellowships in surgery from Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Royal College of Surgeons of England and American College of Surgeons and Honorary Fellowships from Royal College of Surgeons of Thailand and College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan. He was formerly Chair of EMST Committee and NSW Regional Committee of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS). He was elected to Council of RACS in 2006, Treasurer from 2010-2011 and is currently the College President.

Michael HOLLANDS

Dr Ares Leung has combined roles of senior hospital administrator and private medical group organizer. He also contributes to the teaching and regulation of medical standards. He is Deputy Medical Director of Union Hospital since 2005 where he oversees clinical governance in the private hospital. He helped to found several clinical departments, including OB/GYN, emergency medicine, anaesthesiology, internal medicine and paediatrics. Union Hospital is well-known for commitment to patient accountability, aff ordability and transparency. Dr Leung is a member of the honorary teaching staff of both medical schools in Hong Kong. He served the Hong Kong College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in various capacities over the past 20 years. He is the current President and Chairman of Quality Assurance Committee of the College, thus contributing to training and standard regulation to his clinical specialty. He is active in other professional organizations such as the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine and Hong Kong Medical Council. He leads his team to participate in public training and is honorary consultant of a HA cluster. Dr Leung has been appointed Hong Kong Surveyor for the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards. He serves as Honorary Advisor and Co-opt Member for Haven of Hope Care Centre and has been invited to speak at numerous local and international conferences on professional and managerial aspects of medical practice.

Dr Edward Lo is currently Professor in Dental Public Health in the Faculty of Dentistry in the University of Hong Kong. He has obtained his full academic and specialist training in Hong Kong, including BDS, MDS and PhD degrees, and Fellowship of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine. He is an honourary professor in a number of major dental schools in mainland China. He is a past President of the International Association of Dental Research (IADR) Southeast Asian Division and that of the Asia-Pacifi c Region. He is currently the Treasurer of IADR.

Prof Lo is pivotal in the establishment of the specialty of Community Dentistry in Hong Kong and he is the founding Chairman of the Specialty Board of Community Dentistry of the College of Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong (CDSHK). Prof Lo is currently the President of the CDSHK and a member of the Council of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine.

Associate Professor Dr Mohd Idzwan bin Zakaria was born in 1970 in Kuala Lumpur. He started his education in St Michael’s Institution, Ipoh and later in the Teluk Intan Science Secondary School. He pursued his medical degree at the National University of Ireland Galway (NUIG) and graduated in 1996. He then returned to Malaysia and spent six years as a medical offi cer in the Ministry of Health. He completed his Masters in Medicine (Emergency Medicine) in 2004 in Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). He was a lecturer in USM before returning to Kuala Lumpur as a senior lecturer in emergency medicine in University of Malaya (UM). He was made the Head of Trauma and Emergency Department University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) in 2009 and an Associate Professor and Consultant Emergency Medicine in 2010. He has assisted in developing the clinical training in emergency medicine in UM. He has trained many emergency physicians from Malaysia and other countries. He is currently involved actively in the quality accreditation process for UMMC. One of the many quality improvement projects that he has developed was the “Trauma Team” in UMMC and “Triage of the Acute Stroke” in the Acute Stroke Protocol for UMMC.

Sir Richard Thompson was trained in natural sciences and medicine at Oxford and St Thomas’s. In 1972 he was appointed physician and gastroenterologist at St Thomas’ Hospital until he retired in 2005, and for 21 years was physician to HM The Queen.

He was Treasurer of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) from 2003 and elected President in 2010. He is a Trustee of several charities, was a member of an Independent Monitoring Board of a Young Off enders’ institute and is a member of the MOD research ethics committee. He is an honorary associate of the Nightingale Fellowship.

Richard THOMPSON

Dr Thong Meow Keong is a Professor of Paediatrics and Clinical Geneticist at the University of Malaya Medical Centre. He is a board-certifi ed clinical geneticist and established the fi rst Genetics Clinic in 1995 and the Genetics & Metabolism Unit at the Department of Paediatrics, Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya. He has published 60 peer-reviewed journal articles, authored three books, including the Handbook of Hospital Paediatrics (2nd edition) and 10 book chapters, co-wrote three monographs and presented over 100 conference proceedings. He worked with the Ministry of Health Malaysia in developing genetic counselling modules for thalassemia and other genetic disorders. He was a Fulbright Scholar at the CDC, Atlanta, USA and was a recipient for the 8th Royal College of Physicians of London Annual Research Award, the Australia-Malaysia Fellowship in Research Excellence award, the Asian Society for Pediatric Research award and contributed to a World Health Organization (WHO) monograph on “Management of Birth Defects and Haemoglobin Disorders”. Prof Thong’s research interests included birth defects, adult genetic disorders and inherited metabolic disorders. He was the Head, Department of Paediatrics, University of Malaya from 2009-2011 and the current President, Asia-Pacifi c Society of Human Genetics and President, College of Paediatrics, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia.

THONG Meow Keong

Professor Kriang Tungsanga graduated from Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok in 1973. He received the Diplomate in Internal Medicine (1977) and Fellowship in Nephrology (1984) from the same Institute. He had research fellowship training at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore for two years.

Prof Tungsanga now works at Division of Nephrology, Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University. He has published more than 131 original papers in peer-review journals. He is also a co-author on Chapter “ kidney diseases in East Asia “ in the text book “The Kidney” by Brenner and Rector( Eds.).

He was the Past President of the Nephrology Society of Thailand. He is now the Co-Chair of the International Society of Nephrology, Global Outreach Program: Oceania and South-East Asia Subcommittee ( 2007-2016), and the President of the Royal College of Physicians of Thailand (2012–2014) .PRESIDENT

Kriang TUNGSANGA

Professor Ian Ritchie graduated from Aberdeen University Medical School, following which he served as a Junior Medical Offi cer in the Royal Navy for fi ve years. Following this commission, he undertook orthopaedic training in Aberdeen and became a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Forth Valley, in the middle of Scotland, in 1992.

Since then, Prof Ritchie has had a general orthopaedic practice including emergency and elective work and he has also developed his interest in medical education and training at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He became a Member of the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2000, a Vice-President in 2009 and is now President for the period 2012 to 2015.

Ian RITCHIE


Associate Professor Dinesh Varma qualifi ed with MBBS in India and went on to do MD in Radio-diagnosis. He migrated to Australia in 1990 and underwent his specialist training in Radiology at The Alfred Hospital, Melbourne, Australia, and became a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologist in 2000. His specialist training included an accredited Fellowship in MRI at The Alfred Hospital. His particular area of interest is Trauma and Emergency Radiology and MRI, and the role of radiology in the integrated multidisciplinary approach to imaging and management of multitrauma patients. His main area of research is in traumatic brain and cervical spine injuries. Assoc Prof Varma is currently the Deputy Director of Radiology, Head of Trauma and Emergency Radiology at The Alfred Hospital, Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Surgery, Monash University and Director of Training for the accredited RANZCR training program. His research and academic involvements include 40 publications including peer reviewed articles, book chapters and abstracts as well as a Supervisor of post graduate degrees (Masters and PhD). He is an Associate Editor of Journal of Medical Imaging and Radiation Oncology. He is an active member of national and international Radiology Societies and on the advisory panel of various international projects, including a custom built Emergency and Trauma Centre in Galle, Sri Lanka that was commissioned in March 2011.

Dinesh K. VARMA

Datin Dr Sivasakthi Velayuthapillai started as a house offi cer in 1980 after securing her MBBS degree in Mysore, India. Thereafter, she went on to do her rotation postings till she landed in the Anaesthetic department in 1983. She proceeded with her training and successfully completed her FANZCA training in Australia in 1988. Dr Velayuthapillai was then posted as HOD in Melaka hospital till 2011. In June 2011, she was transferred to HKI as Head of Anaesthetic services.

Dr Velayuthapillai is the current President of the College of Anaesthesiologists since April 2013. She was the President of Malaysian Society of Anaesthesiologists from 2011 to 2013. Her areas of interest are Ambulatory anaesthesia and Anaesthetic Clinic and research.

Sivasakthi K. VELAYUTHAPILLAI

Dr Wong Sik Nin graduated from University of Hong Kong and completed paediatric training in Queen Mary Hospital. He sought subspecialty training in PICU in 1986-1987 at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto (sponsored by Croucher Foundation Fellowship), and in Nephrology in 1991-1992 at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital (sponsored by British Commonwealth Medical Scholarship). His research interests are childhood urinary tract infection, enuresis, systemic lupus erythematosus, vasculitis, and hypertension. He has published over 90 scientifi c articles in peer reviewed journals, seven book chapters, and made regular oral/poster presentations and given invited lectures at scientifi c meetings. Dr Wong held offi cial positions in various specialist professional bodies: the Hong Kong Paediatric Nephrology Society, Hong Kong Paediatric Society, Hong Kong College of Paediatricians (Offi ce bearer since 2004). He contributed to the establishment of continuing medical education system for paediatricians and the system of accreditation of new paediatric subspecialties in Hong Kong. He is also Associate Editor of the Hong Kong Journal of Paediatrics since 2007, and acted as reviewer for various local and international journals including Hong Kong Journal of Paediatrics, Hong Kong Medical Journal, Pediatric Nephrology, International Journal of Rheumatology, Saudi Medical Journal, Hypertension Research. Dr Wong’s current appointment is Consultant Paediatrician, Tuen Mun Hospital Hong Kong and Honorary Associate Professor in Paediatrics, University of Hong Kong.

WONG Sik Nin

Under the government sponsorship, Dr Peter Wong studied medicine at the University of Malaya, obtained fellowships in General Surgery from the Royal Colleges of Edinburgh and Glasgow, and pursued further training in plastic surgery in England. He then returned to Sarawak where he set up the plastic surgery services. Together with a group of medical colleagues, they built the Timberland Medical Centre in Kuching where Dr Wong is currently practicing as a plastic surgeon. He had served in various capacities in several organizations. He was past President of the Malaysian Association of Plastic, Aesthetic & Craniomaxillofacial Surgeons, and organised scientifi c meetings at national and international levels.

Dr Wong is currently the President of the College of Surgeons Malaysia, Chairman of Plastic Surgery Subcommittee in the National Specialist Register of Malaysia, Chairman of the Joint Committee on Aesthetic Medical/Surgical Practice in Malaysia, Examiner and Board Member of Malaysian Board of Plastic Surgery, and Chairman of Timberland Medical Centre.

Peter WONG Toh Lee


Dr Kandasami is Professor of Surgery at the International Medical University. He received his medical degree from University of Bombay in 1975 and the Fellowships from the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland, Edinburg and Glasgow in 1980. After his surgical training in the United Kingdom, Prof Kandasami served as Consultant General Surgeon in several Ministry of Health hospitals before joining the International Medical University in 2001. He was appointed Dean of the Clinical School,IMU for the period 2004 to 2009.

Prof Kandasami has contributed substantially to the development of surgical services in the country. He has been actively involved in organizing and conducting postgraduate courses and was the Chairman of the Higher Surgical Training Committee of the College of Surgeons, Malaysia. He was Deputy Chairman and currently member of the National Perioperative Mortality-Review Committee. Prof Kandasami is the Scribe of the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia, a past President of the College of Surgeons of Malaysia and a past President of the Malaysian Society of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Malaysia. His main interest is in the fi eld of upper gastrointestinal surgery.SCRIBE

Palayan KANDASAMI

Dato’ Dr Khoo Kah Lin, Director of Heart Foundation, Malaysia practices cardiology in Pantai Medical Centre. He is the immediate past President of the Malaysian Medical Association and is currently the Deputy Master of the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia and Council Member of the National Heart Association of Malaysia. He is also a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia, the Royal College of Physicians (United Kingdom and Ireland), American College of Cardiology, European Society of Cardiology and Academy of Sciences, Malaysia.

Dr Khoo’s research works and numerous contributions earned him the Dato’ship Award in 2003 and the MMA Gold Medal Award as well as the Gold Medal Award from the Rotary Club of Malaysia in 2012. In 1991 and 2004, he was bestowed the MMA Award for outstanding public and healthcare services. He has numerous research publications in local as well as international medical journals, recently focussing on the genetic aspects of hyperlipidaemia. Dr Khoo has contributed signifi cantly to society in various special projects. He established the Inherited Cholesterol Disorder Club in the Heart Foundation of Malaysia in collaboration with MSD Pharmaceuticals to provide statins at discounted rates to make this aff ordable for Familial Hypercholesterolaemia patients who require this medication for life.

Formed in 1957, the vision of the Academy is to be the leading institution for postgraduate medical education in the region.
